It is quite the reclamation project in retrospect here.

Redeemed not just Zabka as an actor and the character Johnny but the entire franchise. I mean it was loved but was sort of made fun of too for how cheesy it got in the sequels especially. Managed to bring more to the story and still respect the original and pay respect to Mr. Miyagi as well.

Thumbs up overall even though it went off the rails several times. It always managed to reel itself back in.

But -- I think that was kind of the point. The show never took itself too seriously -- and that was in the same vein as the movies. It had points where it was serious. It has points where the actors were almost caricatures, but it always came back to points where they were grounded.

Yeah, this is a perfect analysis of it. It would totally swing for the fences at times, but the character work is so good that there was a good base for the mayhem.

Funny though how I think that was more accepted in TV format then in movie format. If you went to a 3 hour movie with that much cheesiness it would get panned (as the sequels often did).

Basically I'm saying the format served it well....a retreaded sequel series of movies would have flopped with the same content.

The ridiculousness of the show was always fun and entertaining because the show knew exactly how ridiculous it was and embraced it.

I think they ended this perfectly. I did not predict that they would have Johnny fight a final battle, but in hindsight it was so perfect that I should have thought of it. He finally got redemption.

I do wish they they had showed him going to his mom's grave in earlier seasons to make that have more impact.

top gun tunes at the wedding, a sentimental moment and closure between kreese/johnny, the movies theme song saved for the final episode with johnny now being the hero. thats how you wrap up a series. hate what the ET industry has become, but this show was damn near perfect for me.

In case anyone was wondering about the conversation in the very last scene. The two guys talking are the creators of Cobra Kai, and they were talking about getting all the actors from Back to the Future together for a tv series. They said they were just having a little fun, and there are currently no plans for said series.

The story of how the show came about was amazing.

The creators did the movie Hot Tub Time Machine and they loved Karate Kid universe. They actually cast William Zabka who really wasn't getting parts in that movie because they loved him so much.

Then you had the youtube videos and the bit on HIMYM about Johnny being the real Karate Kid, and the rest is history.

I literally watched it on youtube TV when almost no one had it and I would tell people how good it was, but no one believed me.

That first season is one of the greatest first seasons of TV.
The last 6 episodes were almost as good.

They lost their way in the middle.

I was in on the first season also. Its awesome how much it blew up after the move to Netflix.

Also I gotta disagree, I loved the show the whole way through. The final episode of S3 might still be my favorite of the whole show.

And then Silver showing up was such a shot in the arm for the show. Such an awesome villain.

If you had youtube TV you could get YouTube Red.

I"m probably one of 5 people that watched Ryan Hansen solves crimes on TV.

The teen drama and the ridiculous fights soured me.

They lost their way in the middle but righted the ship.

There was teen drama literally ever season. It was always a karate soap opera.

The trick was this show always embraced its cheesiness.

One of the most badass endings to a TV show ever. They really brought it full circle. I'm going to go rewatch the original three movies now.

Finally finished it and it pretty much ended as perfectly as it could have. Was it ever television or cinematic excellence? No , but it was fun . Was it kinda ridiculous at times? Of course, but still fun.

End of S2 school fight scene will always be one of my favorite sequences from the show. So unrealistic, so silly, so over the top, but so fun to watch.

So happy to have seen Zabka's career especially get a revival from this as by all accounts he's just about the nicest guy in Hollywood. Hope he gets more roles and if he doesn't, hope the residuals keep him very financially secure moving forward.

There are some people in TV you would just love to hang out with on a personal basis (entire cast of Modern Family seems cool af and I'd love to hang with them) , Zabka and most of this cast seems that way too.

I've been Zabka fan even following him on his Oscar nomination and his video he directed for Sweep the leg Johnny.

I hope this turns into a ton of success for him.

I finally finished it, and I guess I'm in the minority, because I found the last season to be a slog to get through. I think the years between season 5 and 6, followed by the mini-seasons with months between episodes, made it really hard for me to get into it. I also started watching the show on YouTube Red, and immediately loved it. I think the best seasons were on YouTube. Once it switched to Netflix, it was still good, but seemed a step off. I feel like the final season was really bad, though. Random dojos. Random villains. Long breaks between episodes. I still loved the series overall, though.

However, the final three episodes were damn near a perfect wrap up to the show.

You want them to do an episode on each of the "random dogos/villians" across the world? That would extend the season even longer and make the viewers hate villains that the Miagi/Cobra dogos have never even met yet. That wouldn't make any sense. It makes more sense to do what they did and have them (and us) meet these new villians together.

Other than episode 10, which I thought was one of the worst of the series, the last season was pretty good.

No, they don't need to do an episode in each dojo. However, they could have found some sort of story that utilizes existing characters/villains.

They played out all the existing people locally. Trying to bleed that turnip would have been lame. What would they do? Have Silver build a nuke that they have to disarm?

It's clear that the show had to end with an international tournament. When you have an international tournament, you need new people/villians. That's just the nature of it. I think they did really well with it.

I get what you're saying, but I feel like it's because the writers put themselves into a box by constantly having the bad guys become the good guys. Let some of the kids be villains for more than a couple of episodes. Also, for the final fight you had some random sensei who just showed up this year. They had both Kreese and Silver. They could have had a Johnny vs Kreese fight. Or Danny vs. Silver. Instead they had Kreese and Silver blow each other up, and have the final fight with this random guy.
