rogue nation has been on tv lately...such an enjoyable film.
in terms of film franchises, i think the MI films have actually moved past the Bond movies as my second most highly anticipated (behind the MCU).
The interesting thing is that I feel (generally speaking) the MI films have gotten better with each one. You don't typically see that in a franchise spanning so many titles.
I'm assuming when you say better that you have erased the John woo /limp biz kit 2nd film from your mind, that one was a decided step back, but 3 and up have all been great action flicks with a side of spy action.

funny you say that, it was on last night.
i don't think there's any real question that it's the worst film of the franchise. to me, it's also the one that stands out as feeling the least like the other MI films. but strictly as an action film, it was actually more enjoyable than i remembered. they relied too heavily on the "face mask fake out" bit.

That's why I said "generally speaking." However, I also enjoyed MI:2 probably more than most with all of its ridiculousness
People ether forget or don't realize that M:I2 was cool as sh*t when it came out. John Woo was huge at the time, a lot of people loved the look/aesthetic, and there were definitely some memorable actions sequences, at least for that era of film making. Even that Limp Bizkit rendition was a huge hit, played on the radio all summer long, and the trailers were massively popular as well (all embedded to below). It was summer 2000, same summer as Gladiator and X-Men, and all three movies were considered huge hits and came to define that summer.
It was only later that M:I2 started to get a bad wrap. Sure there were people who didn't like it initially, but by and large it was a cool movie until it suddenly wasn't. Don't get me wrong, it's definitely the "worst" of the franchise, but it's not a bad movie at all, save for some ridiculousness here and there, and I still really dig huge chunks of it. That said, it's been forever since I've seen it and I'm looking forward to the rewatch when I marathon all five movies so far before the release of Fallout, something I haven't ever done...
Also, I was 19 when it came out, and may or may not have been inspired to grow my hair out like Cruise that summer and buy the Oakleys that explode in the opening of the trailer (the same ones Cyclops sported in X-Men, except his had red-tinted lenses).
The more I read about this sequence - and about the movie in general - I honestly wouldn't be surprised if this goes down as greatest practical action movie in history. It looks and sounds utterly mind-blowing.
I'm not sure what's more impressive: 106 HALO jumps or learning to fly a helicopter. Tom Cruise can be a weirdo all he wants if he keeps making badass movies.
I don't know how many journalist/critics are at this screening, but Twitter reactions are allowed the second it ends. Allowing reactions three weeks in advance certainly says Paramount has confidence in this one. Will post later this afternoon...
