Anyone notice the "money shot" from the first trailer wasn't in the movie? (Ethan about to get into a head on collision with a truck.)

This is a potential spoiler but a question I have:

So the White Widow is totally the daughter of Max from Mission Impossible right?

Watched this today. The third act was totally insane and cements Cruise as the greatest action hero of all time, if there were any doubt.

One this is apparently I should have rewatched the last MI film in the past week or two. I wasn't expecting such a direct sequel and I had to kinda piece together who some of the people were. That's my bad, though, not the film's.

Not sure I would go that far but it's definitely on Mount Rushmore.

Yes, I have heard that about the White Widow. Looks like the franchise is going all the way back to the beginning to pick up plot points. Pretty cool.

Yes I noticed that. Also, some of Luther's dialog from the trailer was missing.

I'll be chastised as I'm clearly in the minority but I'll go ahead and say it: I thought it was lame.

Too long. Too long winded on cheap dialogue. Not a thinking movie at all (like the original was). Formulaic fighting scenes. Attempts at suspense flopped. Count down sequence that was 2-3x as long as the timer. Giant plot holes. Ving Rhames looking rougghhh...

Holy hell. Best MI movie, and is certainly on Mt Rushmore of best action films.

Saw it last night. This is as tightly constructed, thrilling, and well-made as everyone is saying. What really got me though is they attempted to develop Ethan Hunt's character a little, which was missing from the previous films. In a way, this is The Winter Soldier of the Mission Impossible seriesan examination of a character through their moral fortitude in a corrupt world. That and the set pieces are just thrilling, building on one other in an organic way.

That being said, I do think people need to tap the breaks a little on comparing it to Fury Road or any other classic. It's good, really good, often great, but it's a little too locked into formula to really reach those heights. Regardless, it's probably the new best in the series.
Rewatching the series, I noticed something about Rogue Nation

In Rogue Nation, McQuarrie portrays Hunt as a reckless gambler and uses Solomon Lane as foil portraying him as a calculating chessmaster.

In Fallout, McQuarrie portrays Hunt as a moralist who refuses to endanger innocent civilians and uses August Walker as a foil who idealist willing to make sacrifices for "the greater good".

In both films, he really pounds those themes home (not that it's a bad thing). That may be a signature of his directing style.

I can give you "not a thinking movie" to a certain extent because it wasn't an overly intellectual plot, but that's about it.

I was on the edge of my seat for just about the entire film, the fight sequences overall were really fun and interesting, and I was amazed when I realized the film was as long as it was. So yeah, pretty much entirely disagree, but to each their own I guess.

It's hard to define exactly what I mean. I think something like The Dark Knight or The Matrix is a better movie overall, and both feature plenty of amazing action, but this was, hands down, the best string of action sequences in a single movie, from start to finish, that I have ever seen. So does that make it the "greatest action movie of all time," even though The Dark Knight and The Matrix are probably better "action" movies overall? Yet one is technically a superhero movie and the other sci-fi. Eliminating those two genres or anything similar (i.e. anything outside the realm of "grounded" - aka "pure action" and nothing superhero, sci-fi, post-apocalyptic, fantasy, etc.), I don't see what else even comes close to this?

All I know is that there is absolutely no way anyone can name a single movie that has that many monumental action scenes, especially that many practical action scenes, where the star is literally risking his life scene in and scene out. It's utterly unparalleled, I think it'll be years before anyone tops it, and if/when they do, it'll probably just be the next Mission: Impossible movie.

That was staggeringly, jaw-droppingly good.

You have said it from the beginning of the thread and your hype was 100% warranted.

In fact, I'd be surprised if this doesn't nab that tenth spot for Best Picture next year.
TCTTS

That would be awesome. If this and something like First Man make the ten, I think the Oscars finally see a nice little uptick in viewership, with a couple of quality, mainstream movies made for mass audiences as compared to the more indie, dramatic fare that usually makes the list.

If you're just talking the big, booming explosions and death-defying stunts, sure. It was a very good action film. But I'll agree that films like The Matrix, Die Hard, The Dark Knight, Terminator 2, Predator, Lethal Weapon, and the first M:I are better. In a way, this harkens back to many of those films. Not trying to belittle it, I loved it, but I'm not quite sure it's on that pantheon.

Absolutely insane. I'm not seeing any tethers on Cruise when he climbs that rope on the helicopter, or, incredibly, when he falls down to the payload.. Everyone hugs him before the stunt like it's the last time they'll see him.

Love the way he checks out the helicopter before he flies it..... a true pilot.

$140M+ worldwide opening, which beats out GP's $130M as the highest franchise opening.

Based on the other movies, and the surely great word of mouth, this should be the first MI movie to break $700M.

Somehow these movies have never broken out in the same way the F&F movies have, but hopefully this one has strong legs.

Man what a great movie! Saw it last night in IMAX and even though I initially was pissed about the seats (now that I usually go to the luxury recliner seats old style movie seats really are horrible in comparison) the movie was so good it was well worth it.

Best cinematography in an action film since Skyfall for me. Some jaw dropping sequences and even some other shots were just phenomenal.

The action sequences themselves were so great. Every fight was amazing. Tough to believe that Cruise could all of a sudden become a passable helicopter pilot on the fly but I didn't care because the sequence was so freaking cool.

The score was great too. Not sure if it was just the IMAX theater I was at but the sound mix was PERFECT. Best since Interstellar for me.

Best MI movie IMO.

Saw it. Enjoyed it. Probably my favorite MI ever. At least pushes GP or III.

Glad they made it.

As a complete movie I thought it was middle of the pack in the series.

Writing/acting didn't feel as sharp as previous entries. I lost track of the number of times Ethan's crew asked where he was and seemed surprised he was attempting some crazy stunt. "He's in a helicopter? Wait, a helicopter?" Cavill seemed to only have two gears - wooden and overacting. Also don't think the scenes' intended for maximum emotional impact hit as hard as 3 or 4.

As a practical stunt/technical display of action film making it's obviously an incredible achievement. Impossible not to leave with tremendous respect for Cruise, the director and technical staff. I just wish some of the other elements were as on point.

This movie was awesome. Cant wait to go back and watch again. Only downside was there weren't enough shots of Rebecca Ferguson in her hotness.

I like it! But she is now free to leave and retire now that Lane is captured

Also noticed Jeremy Renner is out, which I'm fine with

Did they set up a 7th movie with Angela Basset taking over as Secretary?

Yep. But my thoughts on that is that she'll be free to join IMF.

Ethan already knows he can't have a girlfriend/wife at home while he's out saving the world.
