one of the best things the movie did was make the "hunting with the raptors" the absolute LAST resort, and one that Pratt was opposed to from the very beginning. The trailers made it look like this was a normal thing for him, and I was very relieved that he was so reluctant to do it, and then completely validated when it all went tits up about 2 minutes later.

I approve that tits up phrase. I haven't used that since I left Texas. Damn.

You have to put JW over LW for the gymnastics scene alone. Although yes, the trailer/double T-Rex scene was pretty damn cool.
the gymnastic scene was no worse than finding a 20 year old jeep and returning it to completely operational status in just a few minutes while a giant genetically altered dinosaur is looking for you

There are ridiculous things about the movie, and the jeep thing is one of them, but at least don't make things up. He just replaced the battery. He didn't rebuild the engine or anything.
fine, then let's talk about how insane it is to think they could just grab a 20 year old battery that was lying around throw it into a 20 year old jeep, and off they go into the jungle
I thought the battery they picked up was from a more recent crashed vehicle (maybe from the earlier strike crew)

That fact that it went to **** completely validated it for me

It very clearly was. Apparently not understanding that is the key to hating the movie.

what did the older brother acting like a horny letch add to the movie?
The theme of the movie is relinquishing control and valuing relationships. By establishing the older brother as a poon hound in the first act, it makes his character arc more powerful at the end when he swears that he will always be there for his brother.

quote:
What did the "love story" between Pratt and BDH impact? nothing.
BDH is the central character of film with the biggest character arc. She begins as a control freak (who "prints out an agenda for a date") but ultimately becomes the person who lets loose a freaking T-Rex.

As the hero of the film, Pratt is the static character who represents relating with nature. By establishing Pratt and BDH as jilted lovers who refuse to even use each others first name, it makes her arc more powerful.

I really feel like you must not have paid attention to the movie. Your complaints seem very arbitrary.

The leering of the older brother was part of the larger theme of distraction of the public. It recurred all over. The fact that patrons weren't wowed by dinosaurs anymore was the basis for the movie.

The love story was pretty generic. Owen's naval background was obviously working with dolphins, as has been discussed, but I understand why they didn't get into it, as it opens up a bunch of questions that would require more screen time to answer but ultimately not really add value. The divorce was clumsy but pretty much just a reason for the kids to be shipped off to Aunt Claire.

There's always a reason to complain about something if you look for it. And again, none of these things are really any different than in JP.
I don't buy at all that the leering older brother was part of the larger theme of distraction of the public. The park was PACKED, it was obviously still successful. People everywhere were in awe of every exhibit they showed. Nobody looked bored at the Megalodon demonstration, the T-Rex, or even the petting zoo. If they wanted to show that people weren't that "in to" the park anymore, they did a pretty ****ty job of it.

I did guess that he'd worked with dolphins in the Navy, but it's never stated and there aren't even any context clues about that. You would have to know that the Navy trains dolphins to pick that up, and how many people actually know that?

I know WHY they included the divorce, but again, it was pointless and overly complicated. She could have just as easily said "we're sending you on this great trip to see your aunt! isn't that cool!" and achieve the same end.

I wasn't looking for things to complain about. I took a day of vacation from work to go see this movie, since I was busy all weekend and didn't get to see it earlier. I was SUPER excited to see it, I went in WANTING to love it, the same way I love all three of the previous films, all of which I own on blu-ray.

But this was NOTHING like Jurassic Park. I must have watched JP a hundred times, and it doesn't contain any of the useless garbage that this movie had. Everything in that movie had a purpose, every little thing they said or bit of character backstory they revealed came into play and became important later in the movie.

I liked the movie, but i set aside all movie expectations after Desolation of Smaug. Just enjoy the air conditioning, popcorn and Dolby sound and be glad you aren't at work.

(I know not everything is Dolby.)

I'm not sure we'd agree on the definition of powerful.

Regardless, i enjoyed looking at the girl. She had plenty of 3D for me.

The only thing I think the film missed was the science/innovation vs ethics/morality debate. I know Pratt's character discussed it a little bit and there was some discussion of it in the Masrani/Wu scene, but it mostly focused on whether it was right to create a hybrid. JP 1 and 2 had the debate about whether extinct species should be created in the first place for the purpose of monetization. Additionally, this was brought up by the techie Malcolm wannabe, though it was hard to buy-in to that given he worked at the resort.

It would have been interesting to see the older kid written as the scientific skeptic instead of the bored teenager. I could imagine a script where the older kid has read Ian Malcom's writings on the subject and believes the trip to JW is a bad idea. He doesn't want to go but the parents convince him that it will be fine and besides, they will be in the care of their aunt who runs the place. When they get there he discusses his skepticism with the assistant and the aunt, but eventually puts aside his concerns and is awed by the dinosaurs and enjoys himself (as Dr. Malcolm would say "ooh, aah, that's how it always starts..."). Then once they are confronted by the I-Rex, he shifts back to being a skeptic and realizes that it will take some fast thinking to survive their situation.

Everything in JP came back around in the movie? Like how the dinosaurs changing sex to mate (life finds a way) impacted... what in the movie, exactly? They never even encounter a wild baby dino. They spent a LOT if time talking about it to no actual purpose.

Maybe you argue that it proves Ian right about the lack if control, but really the only thing they don't control is Dennis Nedry. The truth is it's just a holdover from the book's much different final act.

I absolutely loved how the book dealt with the dinosaurs reproducing. Also more fun to have Hammond as a genuinely evil capitalist instead of a happy grandpa.

Highly recommended reading for anyone that enjoys the films (or despises them, apparently) and wants to get some more backstory.

so now that movie goers have proven that they care more about nostalgia than quality, how long until other big early spielberg movies get new big budget sequels?

What's next? Jaws? ET?

I see no need to nitpick this movie unless people try to say that JPIII or LW were inferior because of their unbelievable parts.

Having watched both in the last few days, I throughly disagree. Given your other opinions, this isn't surprising

Can we discuss the realism of JP3 where an 10 year old survives on Isla Sorna by himself for 8 weeks?

Or how the grad student survives being killed by pteradons?

I have never seen a JP movie all the way through, but understand why JP 1 was so highly regarded.

That said, JW was a great rush. Pure entertainment. It was nothing amazing. It even lacked the depth of a Dawn of the Planet of the Apes where after the movie you discussed the why and how. Nope. JW was just eye candy. Sweet candy though.

I saw it in IMAX with a family of four and we all agreed we had a great time. And the missus is not really an action movie type

Yes, the comparisons to the Roger Moore era Bond movies is fair. But those were fun in their day too.

JP 3 is one of the worst movies ever. To say that it is better than any movie would be wrong 99.9999999% of the time. The fact that someone owns a dvd of JP 3 cost me $50, as I lost a bet that they would even waste time or money creating dvd's that would never be bought.

Just saw it last night and thought it was terrible. I dont know what was worse, the CGI or the script.

Spoliers below:

- The ENTIRE dino tag team fight at the end was so freaking lame. I was cringing at the awfulness.
- "You still have those matches?" Like, what? Why the **** is the kid carrying matches? and he used them to make a semi hand torch that was discarded within 10 seconds?
- "Remember that summer we fixed up grandpa's malibu?" Oh dear god, you can't be serious.
- And I can't even begin to describe how much I hated the whole, "Militarize these raptors" subplot.

I'm sure there's more I didn't remember but I am so pissed that this made so much money. It only encourages Hollywood to continue making ****. I don't understand how you can invest hundreds of millions of dollars into a movie and marketing and decide on THAT script. There has to be more talented writers out there.

Seriously this movie felt like a more expensive SyFy production akin to Sharknado. This belongs on the mantle right next to Lost World and JP3.

Save your money folks...or better yet, go see Mad Max instead.

Are you kidding? They beat you over the head with this idea. That was the whole reason they had to invent bigger and meaner dinosaurs.

I saw it. Thought it was good, but had an overwhelming sense of sadness for the animals. they were bred to be there and then forced to fight each other when the humans were in danger. totally set up to fail but guess that's the point of this. don't **** with nature.

also, the younger brothers hair was awful. seriously, just awful. get a ****ing hair cut kid.
