Man, when the original theme swelled when the kid opened the shades, I got chills.

I'm a sucker for that kinda stuff.

Just got back. Took the two kids to see it. My oldest is 12 and I had taken him to see the first one when it was released in 3D a couple of years ago. My youngest is 7 and hasn't seen any of them.

We paid the extra to see it in IMAX 3D and my God was it worth the money. Everyone loved it. My youngest was giggling during the pteradon attack on the parkgoers. I was worried about it being too intense for him but he absolutely LOVED it. We walked out and they were both asking when we'd see it again.

For me, this movie was everything I could have hoped for in a JP movie. It was damn near perfect. The first movie is so iconic, but this is easily the second best of the series. It's mind-boggling that this had the second biggest opening ever. And I see this movie having legs over the next couple of weeks. No offense to Pixar, but I can really see JW staying #1 over Inside Out next week (and Inside Out is getting fantastic early reviews).

And can we all not agree that Michael Giacchino is the absolute BEST composer in Hollywood right now?

I actually didn't think that was the best place for the original theme. It didn't have the awe of the very opening of the theme with the brachiosaur to me.

Def agree with that. Never reached those heights but then, what movie does?

Hillcountry, the original movie wasnt that great. You're remembering it wrong. It was probably fun because you were of the right age and disposition and it was a hell of a popcorn flick. It was a good roller coaster ride, nothing more.
This.

Over the last 20 years I tried like 4 times to sit through the original and never made it. Finally last week I made it all the way through and now understand why I couldn't make it before. It starts out with great possibility - the wide ranging shots of a great island, the ethical and biological angles, the technology etc,...and by about 40 minutes it devolves into nothing more than another Friday the 13th sequel with dinosaurs. Great special effects for the time and an OK movie I guess, but the fascination with and ratings for the movie boggle me.

The music was haunting in this. I got chills throughout. Yeah some stuff fell flat but overall it was stunning.

Also, it really goes to show how fake CG looks in daylight. At night even the stuff here was pretty damn amazing.

Amazing that this is the first film to gross $500M globally on its first weekend.

well you got a lot of things playing in it's favor....

  • Pratt who is currently a box office gold mine
  • Jurassic nostalgia for older audience
  • and parents who will take their kids (i did)
  • kids love dino's always have always will
  • nothing else was opening worth seeing
  • speilberg still attached to its development
but still nobody thought it would be this big.

Saw it Friday night. Loved the first 2/3'rds of it, and still found the last act to be good as well though a bit heavy in the cheesiness department at times. I liked the homages to the original JP throughout the film. As a whole, this film was way better than I thought it was going to be.

We still had that feeling in LW and JP3 with the Stegos and when they were flying over the island (though to a lesser extent.) I was really hoping for an amazing dino reveal... Some classic dino - Stego, Trike, Brachiosaur - in a non threatening environment. I still get butterflies when seeing the Brachio scene with the Jeep on JP1. I just... I'm an old dino nerd. Until 6th grade, I thought I was going to be a paleontologist and actually read some of the paleontology course works books (Bakker, etc) when I was in 5th grade. I love taking people to the HMNS because I can be a tour guide without reading the info on the dinos. Honestly, the anky scene, when they first rolled into them slightly had that feel. So yes, self confessed dino nut and I may be a bit biased by that but I think there very easily could have been something cool. Even just something as simple as the monorail coming through a herd of herbivores could have been awesome.

I agree with TCTTS. One thing that I think is critical for a story is to only require one true suspension of disbelief. In JP's case, you only needed to be able to believe that it were possible to clone dinosaurs and they did a great job explaining why. Everything else in the movie really did play off of that one thing and it worked well. It's also why I think TLW would have been 10x the movie if it didn't have the San Diego scenes. Make the final TRex showdown on the item a bit better and end the movie there. Remove the kid and the movie really would work so much better. JP3 is just a mess, but a fun one.

In all honesty, after seeing these numbers... Star Wars does $250+ opening weekend domestic. $550+ world wide. I'm not even kidding. It's going to be unlike anything we've ever seen.

A lot will depend on the reviews. The movie will make money regardless, but the great earners get pushed over the top by really good reviews that push more discerning eyes to movies like this.

For JW, Pratt has become a huge draw. He's a wholesome, (apparently) Christian, right-wing, gun crazy, no nonsense guy who has stated in many interviews that he's only doing this until he can provide the life he wants for his kid(s). That resonates deeply with moviegoers in the same way that American Sniper did. There aren't a lot of those kind of people in the business and even fewer who are willing to come out and own it. I know plenty of people who don't care for JP at all, but were still going to see this, because of Pratt.

just got out of my showing

i was highly entertained for most of the movie and had a huge ****-eating grin on my face during the big climactic sequence, as soon as i realized what Claire was planning

not much more to say really, this far exceeded my expectations. minor quibbles aside (why did it matter AT ALL that their parents were probably getting divorced? why the hell was it Christmas...?), that was a hell of a ride

What kind of weirdos are you polling in mass to find "plenty" of people who:
-Didn't like JP, a wildly popular and pretty beloved blockbuster
-Are going to see the 3rd sequel of a movie they didn't like

Exactly how many is plenty?

Weird not knowing who Pratt is. He's cut across a huge swath of demos. Parks & Rec, Zero Dark Thirty, Moneyball, The Lego Movie, Guardians.

I don't think many people really give a **** about him being "christian, right wing, gun loving" or whatever bull**** you want to attach to him.

He seems like fun, easy going dude, and it comes across in his acting.

Saw it with my kids. We all enjoyed it. Pratt is so good. I had some minor complaints, but overall, I think its better than JP. I agree with others who think JP is a little overrated.

Saw it this morning, and it was ridiculous in the best kinds of ways. It's totally unbelievable, Pratt is fantastic, and it's a great summer movie.

And if you want to like him even more, read this:

What a joke of a movie. It suffers from the same disease as the terminator series.

I think it matters to a great deal of people. I can set aside my personal bias' and enjoy a Sean Penn movie from time to time, because he's a good actor, but he's an absolute nut. Same with Tom Cruise; but there just aren't a lot of people who feel the same way as I do. There aren't many movies that reflect traditional American or classically liberal values. There are even fewer actors who can represent those. Pratt resonates with people who value those things. Therefore, people want to see his movies. It's not a hard concept to understand.

Pratt's agent is basically sitting on a printing press. His contracts are going to be absurd going forward.

I loved this movie. Went with the gf and another couple and we all liked it a lot. Asian doc is clearly a sequel pump for InGen to weaponize dinos.

The gyro scene needed less CG imo. I thought the scene with the ankylasaurs was the closest we got to the original JP as it was fantastic.

One question though....

Is it just me or in Jurassic Worlds time line does site B not exist at all? If it did, wouldn't they have raised I-Rex there while building the containment instead of building the containment on the main island with so many things that could (and ultimately do) go wrong?
