i've seen sources that say the episiode ASB was originally titled "Jello" (for jimmy handing out jello to the elderly).....so originally it fit the pattern. no idea why it was changed however.

the alpine shepherd boy figurine was what the old woman went to retrieve that was so important....

both were just references in the show...maybe it has no meaning other than that. but why break the pattern for that? sure that makes it seem important but...maybe not.

I have felt all along that Chuck, even in his debilitated state, does not respect Jimmy as a lawyer and has generally been pretty patronizing toward him. That Chuck is doing most of the heavy lifting on this fraud case foreshadows to me that Jimmy is going to get left at the curb.

The copier code would be a pretty quick red flag when Chuck has been what I would think would be on disability for this long. All of a sudden after no hits for a long time it would pop up on a monthly report, a couple of questions come up, and the case comes to the light of day in HHM. Plus it energized Chuck, it's going to escalate quick. Bet Kim gets caught in the vortex, but chooses to stay loyal to HHM and lets Jimmy twist in the wind.

I took the 6 months comment as Hamlin being asked by Chuck to hire Jimmy, he gives then gives Jimmy the song and dance they are ok for now, see how things go, re-evaluate in 6 months, which was about as polite as he could be to Chuck's brother to tell him to GTFO, it will never happen.

Jimmy has burning hatred for him ever since then. I also think Chuck has a selfish streak and will take the case and toss Jimmy in a second. He jumped on that case with "we" pretty quick and caught Jimmy off guard.
I think we'll find out that Chuck didn't fight too hard for Jimmy. His initial response to Jimmy passing the bar was pretty underwhelming and objectively, Jimmy wasn't qualified for a job at HHM. I think he sent in Hamlin to do his dirty work and tell him no. Not giving him a job is perfectly reasonable, but I think Jimmy will take it personally, especially since Chuck didn't have the guts to do it himself.

I agree about Chuck's selfish streak.
One could interpret Chuck's narcissism as instead, a fear of embarrassment of Jimmy going back to being Slippin' Jimmy.

Chuck is clearly someone who places a great emphasis on doing things the right way. He is very obviously embarrassed by Jimmy's past antics (or occasional present-day schemes). He even gets nervous about Jimmy going dumpster diving for the shredded docs.

Chuck's initial reaction to Jimmy's good news seeming underwhelmed, could be not so much selfishness, but a reaction of a) disbelief that Jimmy could do something like this without it being a con and b) skepticism of the College of American-Samoa as a legit law school. I could easily see Chuck feeling that getting a law degree through correspondence courses, is not the "proper way" to do things.

I don't think Chuck is so much selfish as neurotic. He gets completely stressed out by appearances and propriety and the Slippin' Jimmy antics are a big stress on him.

Now the selfish-ness may show up in the future. If he wants to go back to Hamlin (as I predict he will) and take Jimmy's case with him, then that's pretty selfish and crummy.

yeah, I was wondering why he was puckering prior to meeting with the old folks home attorneys. They had them by the nads, no reason to act cowed until he blurted out 20 mill. At that point, it's not like he had to go outside to meet them or anything, he was in his safe place. Good point.

Best line of the episode was when Jimmy was preparing the old lady's will and says "just one more signature and (looks at picture of Jesus on the wall)...Thy will be done."

re: the 6 month comment. Is the present day still within the 6 month window or was the comment a more distant flashback?

My forecast:
I believe that the firm will come after Chuck and Jimmy causing harm (death?) to Chuck. The firm will take the case from Jimmy and it's at this point that Jimmy goes off the deep end.

Also, Mike's dil is now blackmailing him. After finding out what he has done (murder) she is now ok with spending the cash and then makes the comment "its never enough". I reserve the right to withdraw this if something in BB says otherwise.

Note: One look at my March madness picks will confirm that my forecasts are to be taken with a grain of salt.

This is my interpretation as well. the DiL might be taking advantage of said feelings, but not blackmail really.

At first I thought the lady at the retirement home was the same who played Saul's secretary and would come into play later (I know he said in BrBa that she previously worked at the DMV, but still). Now I feel bad for apparently thinking all overweight white women look the same.

I can't remember where I saw it, maybe Warming Glow or a Sepinwall interview, Might've been the BCS insider Podcast but I believe one of the producers said they changed it from Jell-o because they didn't want any trouble from the brand/Kraft foods.

I agree, I think the alpine shepherd boy is just the name of the hummel figurine from that old lady. But who knows with Gilligan's team. An obscure 1840s song might come into play eventually lol.

Yeah, I did not remotely see the Daughter-in-Law part as being blackmail.

Sigh. I miss the good old days when we would just mindlessly argue back and forth whether or not the show was too slow. Then people would insult each other.

Now, we have intelligent and meaningful discussions. We have folks pinpointing plot details and sharing preddictions. Sigh.

Anyone know why Chuck was nervous and quiet during the whole meeting with the other lawyers? Was he really nervous or was it just a ploy that will eventually lead to the dismissal of Jimmy from this case?

Had to do with his 'condition'. Saul had to coax him in there.

She's not blackmailing him.

She just wanted to know if she could spend the cash. If anything, it's showing that she's coming to terms with it all, and moving on. The storyline with Mike is moving forward. We now know she needs help, and he's going to give it to her however he can (hence the meeting with the vet).

I think he was just kind of nervous about getting back into the game.

However, if I could change one thing about the episode, I would have put Chuck getting preoccupied and going outside before the meeting. He sits there befuddled and then end the episode on him saying "20 million dollars." That was a bigger shocker to me than him going outside.

The 20 million demand from him was interesting, because it showed him come out of his cocoon, but also committed them to a much bigger fight than they'd originally thought. Couple that with him freaking out after going to the car, and it's becoming clear that this might be too big for them to handle on their own.

I also wondered about them using HHM's resources for their case. Chuck is allowed to represent others outside the firm, but I'd suspect that he can't use their resources to do it.

She's not blackmailing him, but I definitely took it as she's manipulating him to get more. Her comment about it not being nearly enough had specific motives behind it.

I'm sure it's not enough. But years later on breaking bad, she's not exactly living the high life. It seems she's barely getting by.

Exactly, he became a hermit because of his condition and before the meeting he was nervous to go into a professional meeting after a number of months away and probably somewhat embarrassed that it had to be at his house.

Has it ever been explained why he quit working? His "condition" is obviously psychosomatic and I assume that it was some conflict at work which caused it. I just don't remember if they explained or alluded to the events that led up to it.

Maybe.

I took it more as just her telling her FIL that it's not enough.

She's justifying using the cash, and her asking for help.....which provides Mike the motivation needed to become the guy we met in BB.

With the lights off and all the doors closed. I thought that was funny and thought to myself how awkward that would actually be.

I liked their line when Jimmy told them to leave everything in the mailbox.

"Yeah I've heard about that."

For those of you who binge watched Breaking Bad, this thread illustrates why watching it week by week was a much more thorough & enjoyable experience.

We tend to nitpick, over-analyze, and search for meaning in every single detail...replaying it over and over and over. We debate dozens of hair-brained, half-baked theories & predictions...almost none of which turn out to be accurate.

The BB threads were like this x10, but it adds a great deal to my viewing experience.

My prediction: The firm will notice that Chuck billed $400 to his number, and they will figure out that he is working on a big case with Saul. They will push to take it over, and will offer Kim partner to side with them. Chuck will negotiate a small finders fee for Jimmy, while they cash in most of the $20M. Jimmy is so disgusted with Chuck that he takes the name of Saul as a way to write Chuck off.

This is about what I'm thinking as well. I'm wondering if HHM figures this out themselves or if Chuck decides he has to bring it to them because he knows it's too big for Jimmy. If Chuck is getting better it might be way more important to him to be of value to his firm again than to be a good brother to Jimmy. Everything that Jimmy has done to try and help him hasn't worked, working on this case has. Either way Jimmy gets paid off and with that Saul Goodman opens an office.

I hope they don't use the code. A firm that big probably wouldn't bother with a $400 discrepancy. I think it is either Kim or Chuck that directly brings in HHM. They are both selfish.

As for the $20MM comment, I just took it as Chuck taking a while to process the data and make a counter offer. I thought it was a stupid move by the other main attorney to mention the number of locations during negotiations and even I saw the dollar signs at that time.
AggieRebel

They may not bother with $400 normally, but when the code of a partner who hasn't been there in months pops up they are going to wonder who used it and why. They can probably trace the date and time the code was used and will find that Kim was the only one in the building when it was used.
