Young Drivers sprint race proposed at end of the racing calendar..

https://www.the-race.com/formula-1/f1-young-driver-standalone-race-proposal-revealed/

Would be cool if they could work out the details and get this over the line.

I wonder what will happen with Imola and Barcelona too, we know the Spanish GP is moving to Madrid in 2026 but Barcelona swears they will stay in the calendar, and Imola is always thrown around as a GP that could get rotated.

Zandvoort doesn't get F2 or F3, but Spa does, so I guess no issue in trying to find a new date for those series. I'd imagine the Zandvoort F1 Academy date could go to COTA unless they become a super weekend with F1/F2/F3/F1 Academy like Barcelona this year (and this would 100% get me there next year lol).

On Beyond the Grid recently Bruno Michel the ceo of F2/F3 said both Miami and Austin are strongly interested in bringing the series but they haven't found a feasible way to bring them. There's F2/F3 drivers that really want to do COTA.

I immediately thought of the Iceman. I miss him. Hope he has the drink wherever he is right now and nobody is telling him what to do.

Question from a newby. How is COTA perceived among the teams/drivers? Your comment about F2&3 drivers wanting to take a spin there made me curious. Its location basically in the middle of rural TX has always struck me as a odd destination for such a sought after spot on the F1 calendar when you look at the other incredible world-wide venues and even Miami and Vegas in the US. So I assume it must be viewed as one hell of a circuit?

When it was new I think I remember it was met with a collective meh. Lately mostly complaints about the bumps.

I think drivers enjoy Austin compared to a lot of stops.

Quote:

"I'm massively excited to be in Austin," said Hamilton, who won the 2007 USGP at Indianapolis before the race went dark for five years before COTA was opened. "Indianapolis was a good time. But I think this place is very special. It's one of the best new circuits we have. A single lap is exciting and then we get this amazing crowd turnout that keeps getting bigger.

"And they just do it differently here, right? I would say us Europeans are good at sports, but there are things we've learned in terms of how we put on the show to grow our audience. Austin is always such a fun place, and they know how to put on a show."
Quote:

"I was just so in love with the barbecue. It was the first time I ever tried brisket. I didn't even know what brisket was!"

Ricciardo was hooked on the cuisine and the vibe.

"I was watching live music every night and, no matter how big or small, it was just such a cool experience. The people were awesome. I felt like they were just uniquely cool and the way they dressed, and it was just something that felt like a real genuine place to hang out."
Quote:

Vettel is a bit nostalgic as his last U.S. race arrives.

"After Indianapolis fell off the calendar and we didn't go back to the USA for a few years, we didn't really know how popular F1 would be," he said. "I remember being a bit surprised and pleased when we arrived in Austin. What's always impressed me about COTA is that it just draws so many people in, and the fans I meet are really into F1 they are properly into the sport."
Quote:

"It's one of the best circuits in F1, but the crowds make the event so special," Vettel said. "They are amazing. You get carried by the support of so many fans. "

COTA is an outstanding track, and is seen as such by most of the grid. The design of COTA involved examining all the best bits of existing tracks and incorporating them into one place.

As for the location, it really isn't rural. It's just outside Austin and right next to the airport. VIPs can get in and get out quickly and easily. It was also added well before the current rise of F1, so it had time to grow as a place to just watch good racing before flashier places decided to try and do the sport.

Bumps:

Quote:

World Champion Max Verstappen has now won the last three Grands Prix at COTA, and he led the calls for changes.

"It needs to be redone because at the moment it feels like it's better suited to a rally car," said Verstappen. "Like I'm jumping and bouncing around. In an F1 car probably you don't even see it as much because of course we are glued to the ground because of the downforce but the bumps and jumps that we have in some places, this is way too much. I don't think it's F1 level. I love this track.

"Honestly, the layout is amazing but we definitely need new tarmac and it needs to be a lot smoother for the coming years because we already asking for this for I think quite a few years, and it's not really been done."
Quote:

"I like some of some of the bumps because it adds character to a circuit, but there's way too many," said Hamilton. "As drivers in the GPDA [Grand Prix Drivers' Association] we are open to discussing with them and helping them, like maybe not doing the whole thing so it costs a fortune. From the last corner to the start line, for example, that's smooth but then the rest of it might not be. The pit lane is smooth but there are other areas that for sure they could patch up and improve."

McLaren driver Lando Norris backed up the comments of Verstappen and Hamilton, and also added his own advice.

"It would be helpful if they didn't put tarmac in a braking zone as well," said Norris. "They've resurfaced some places and they start the tarmac at the 100-metre board into Turn 12, which is where we brake. So just little things they could do. From what I heard they're resurfacing the first sector or something next year, so we'll hope it's a little bit better."

COTA has a contract to host the U.S. Grand Prix through 2026.

Elsewhere on the championship's schedule organizers of the Canadian Grand Prix have undertaken a full resurfacing of the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in order to ready the new tarmac for the 2024 event next June.

From what I understand - bumps will always be a bit of a problem because of the nature of the clay soil underneath.

Thanks for the insight...interesting. Sounds like if they could get the bumps figured out, it would be a favorite. Cool to have it in Tx.

MotoGP riders are the ones that call out the bumps a lot too, more than F1 cause it affects them more. I recall the last big criticizement COTA had was in 2021 because of the sausage kerbs, Abbie Eaton from W Series suffered some fractures and I recall a driver from F4 US did as well. Vettel was the one that called out the thing on sunday

Yeah we were in the T1 grandstands for both of those - nasty stuff.

In DFW I'm hearing chatter that COTAs contract is up after this year and they are looking at Arlington for a few years to replace it. I've only seen this on a tweet weeks ago and I don't believe it at this time….

That would be a ****ing nightmare. Arlington is not equipped to handle an F1 race. I'm guessing the idea would for it be around the entertainment district but that would involve Jerry and things are never simple when he's involved. Also can you imagine the amount of upgrades needed to the streets in east Arlington to handle an F1 race?

I've heard the same thing but I am guessing it is just a ruse to get COTA to invest more into upgrades. They are trying to cover some grandstands. I swear they talked about resurfacing at least part of the track to help with the bumps (it was before Hamilton and LeClerc were DSQ last year).

The word since 2020 was that Liberty was pretty much done with COTA. Heard from friends that Bobby Epstein wasn't really that popular of a guy. Supposedly 2021 saved COTA's ass and they definitely have added more, a few grandstands will get shade, they have a few amusement park attractions being built, the car condos, etc. Hope they aim for a longer contract extension

I think the Cota contract goes through 2026. They have done quite a bit over the last few years and it's hard to pass up a real track for more thrown together flat streets.

Keeping Marko probably keeps Max. It does feel like there will be some regression from the team, though, with all the talent they are losing. One has to wonder if all of these personnel would be leaving if Horner simply stepped down.

Just saw Audi is talking to Gabriel Bortoleto (F2) about their open F1 seat
jorgerr96
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Thing about that move is that he is signed to Fernando Alonso's management (along with Pepe Marti and Nikola Tsolov, and probably another driver I am missing) and this year he joined the McLaren Driver Academy ... an Audi move would burn bridges I feel. But when you see an F1 seat open you gotta take it.

SUPER rare restock of the blue Ferrari hat from Miami 2024. It was selling for over $400 on eBay most of may after the race, currently selling for $250+ on eBay. You can get it for $55ish right now with that coupon on Fanatics.

I bought another one so I can have one to wear, the other I will try get signed by Charles and Carlos during USGP, then can bring it to Abu Dhabi to get it signed by Aurelia and Maya and get it complete
