Not saying I agree with him. I think competition wise, etc it makes sense to add teams. I think from the current teams selfish point of view, not allowing teams makes sense.

But, to your point, I guess I don't get the it goes both ways comment. Andretti nor GM did anything to increase popularity in US. It got to where it is in the US without GM. And having them likely won't matter one bit for sustaining that popularity. So what are they bringing to the table? That was Gunther's point, we aren't just going to let any team in now that they all want to be here since it's popular. We want to see what they bring.

This is like saying you wont allow someone to buy Apple stock because they didnt invest in the 90's.

You just got to pay more to play -- there's always ways to consider past team's investments. To gatekeep because of this reason is pretty silly.

You say it's silly but I feel like we're saying the same thing. The bids to get in aren't public right? Maybe Andretti was trying to get in at the Apple stock value of the 90's but GM came in at current value….

We're saying the same thing. I just think Gunther is wrong and silly

FWIW, simply paying more in your bid now that it's more popular is "bringing something to the table."

I've been watching F1 since 1997 and I can't really ever remember seeing a cam shoot out of the car like that.

CART had similar issues from 1998-2001 with the Hanford Device. It would over-rev the engine so much that the engines would disintegrate.

Who would you want to see as the drivers for the GM team?

Who do you actually think we will see?

My heart says Danny Ric and Valtteri Bottas would be fun, but I know that's not going to happen.

Colton Herta a lock IMO. And I think we'll rescue Carlos from Williams

I think it will be a Herta with a veteran like Bottas or Perez (yes I know I typed it). Checo would have no shortage of sponsors/fans that a new F1 team would crave.

Each week they will be able to really sell Trickle on having special tires.

Could easily see Checo at the new team since it's only a matter of time until RB gives him the boot

I'm fine if they take someone like Checo or Bottas to build the team, but hopefully they also solve the issue of no room for F2 drivers/drivers from the European ladder. Current F1 era brings drivers at a younger age than previously, I think Hill was an outlier in the 90s but 23 and under seemed like the "target" age (Schumi was 22 when he debuted). Nowadays 25 is already seen as "old" for rookie start, both Herta and O'Wart will be 26 by summer 2026.

Nobody is going to spend that kind of dilution fee money, start a works team and then cheap out on drivers. I feel like F1 does not really understand what they are unleashing. US sports business is a whole different level.

Hopefully this moive is for the positive. The US money is good, but the talent and fans are still way behind here vs EU

i was just thinking about Haas and how their initial lineup was worse, with Gutierrez and Grosjean lol

Holy hell what a messy race. I definitely don't like the stewards inserting themselves into the race like this. The penalties were ridiculous
The Marksman

I don't have an issue with any penalties that were distributed. Break the rules, receive a penalty.

Why didn't they put the SC out and pick up that mirror? That ruined at least two cars races. Big fail by the stewards today.

It's not so much the penalties, but the severity of them. To me they were inconsistent with previous races. It feels like the the new race director is trying to prove a point.

Then there's the issue of the wing mirror. They could have done a safety car for two or 3 laps, had a marshall grab it, and be done with it. Instead they left it out there in one of the few overtaking areas where it got obliterated. That in turn caused two punctures and a much longer safety car.

The conspiracy theorist in me wonders if the penalty against Lando was to ensure McLaren couldn't clinch today and ensure an exciting race next week.

Post race they said the penalties were consistent with previous races. I think they said there have only been 2 races with a yellow flag infringements in the least 7 years and the others were 10s stop and go. Although I saw a replay of Lando's and it was so split second that made it extra harsh.

Lewis' pit lane violation was for greater than 5kph over. Normal pit lane speeding is like .5kph over.

It was on sky sports with Bernie Collin's.

RB should've announced they were firing him much earlier, and then maybe they'd have been able to land a decent replacement. I've been vocal about saying Checo needs to go, but neither of those guys is an improvement at all.

They're stupid as hell for not bringing Sainz back into the Red Bull family.

Edit: think it's Max not wanting it. Max is a better driver but Sainz is extremely good and would win too many and maybe make Max work harder for the champions

Post race Horner basically implied that "we trust Checo to do the right thing". I assume that meant take a buyout and we will call it a mutual parting of ways.

Selecting a #2 driver is such an odd thing. They've got to be good but not too good. So much competition with #1.

I just don't know why they didn't pursue Sainz. Perhaps Jos would have let Max go to Merc if that happened and RB didn't want that.

Maybe holding out hope that Checo wouldn't totally shiit the bed?

As a Carlos fan, I feel for the guy having to drop from Ferrari to Williams.

Yeah, Sainz seems like he's in a "no man's land"… not quite good enough to be THE guy, but too good to be a 2nd driver. Weird deal.
