With all the DNFs and craziness that happens in F1 I'm shocked anyone ever runs Hard Compound tires. Just run soft, medium, medium/soft every race.

I'm also totally lost when announcers say things like hards take time to warm up then Russell immediately sets a fastest lap today on em. Mercedes was flying on the hards
Tyre strategy always seems like it should be more straightforward than it is. However, the circumstances change drastically every single race, so you never know what will happen. I still think back to Albon's race earlier in the year where he ran hard tyres for almost the entire race except for a couple of laps on softs to meet the requirements.

That was in Australia and he ran only 1 lap on softs (last lap) to meet regulations. Pirelli said they were amazed by the feat.

So much pace in that Red Bull, Mercedes fumbled the strategy a little bit but I'm not sure there was really anything they could do in the end.
Yeah, I think with some time and perspective, Hamilton will realize there weren't a lot of good options for him.

But in the moment, I can see how pissed he was... probably more pissed than anything about Russell getting soft and putting Max directly behind him. I think the end would have been the same except maybe Hamilton would have held on to #2.

Was he pissed about Russell pitting or was he pissed that they didn't have him pit? Hindsight is 20/20 but seems the best move would have been to pit both of them. Then they'd have had a legit chance for a 2 & 3 finish.

There's no way they could have pitted both of them. In the moment it felt like Russell forced them to pit him - it was clearly 100% his idea and a late one at that.

As expected, shortly after the race Hamilton was apologizing for to the team.

That's just silly. It's not a dumb rule. It's simply a rule that forces some strategy.

Exactly. If there are no VSC/SC then you make up huge places running hards.

Smart move by Marko. He takes it out of Red Bull's hands and places it squarely in FIA's leadership lap. "Hey, FIA denied the US a chance to have an American driver for all these new US races, not Red Bull, we were willing to let one of our most promising drivers go to Alpine to give that seat to an American."

No way imo FIA can block this with US interest and potential US investment in F1 at an all time high, established rules and procedures be damned.

Except that there are at least 3 American drivers who currently or most likely will qualify for a super license by the end of this year - Newgarden, Rossi, and Sargaent.

But none of those have a guaranteed seat like Herta with this proposed deal. That's a big difference. Now, if FIA turns Herta down, then yes perhaps another team grabs one of those drivers. I'm just saying it's a good strategic move by Red Bull.

Are you insinuating a 0 stop race isn't a strategy? Especially in this year..?

Out of Newgarden, Rossi, and Herta, Newgarden would be my pick, but I understand why they picked Herta. He's very fast but erratic just like a young Max. He likes a very rearward balanced car, like Max.

It keeps the pit stop in the picture. Any challenges to keep a little spice versus the bottom 3-4 teams running hards the whole race (while hoping for a VSC).

Ocon ran inters the whole race on Turkey last year so it can be done but just barely. That was legal though as no pit required on inters and X Wets.

Watching a YouTube video on The Race channel talking about the whether Red Bull and AT conspired at the end, they said that Hamilton was in the wrong engine mode at the restart after the SC. Not that it ultimately mattered, as Max would have gotten past him any way, but it might not have been so easy.

your 'discussion' just doesn't make sense. That'd be like saying a good strategy in football would be to pass the ball two times during a play.Maybe it'd be a better strategy in basketball to not dribble the ball. Always keep players down field in soccer... you could come up with all sorts of 'good' strategies that are all pointless to talk about because they are against the rules.

A better analogy would be requiring at least 1 forward pass a drive.
Or at least 1 3 pointer a quarter.
The original post was me saying it was a dumb rule, because choosing to not stop should be a strategy. Then you came in to talk about how It's against the rules.

Guess we shouldn't talk about hypotheticals or ideas on a fan forum.

No kidding.

Back to Monza and this wonderful back to back to back. Can Albon get in the points with that slippery Williams with no downforce?
Does the Rettifilo chicane cause any intrigue ala last year?

Like Niko said in an interview...it now seems to be a matter of not if, but when/how, Ferrari will make a mistake in the race....shame to see....Red Bull is definitely the better car but they should have largely put Mercedes out of range by now but nope...
Vernada

No doubt - and it's not just mistakes happening in one area. Everyone is contributing something. Drivers, strategy, pit crew. Someone does something terrible every race.

100% the drivers will be competitive...and 100% said competitiveness will disappear after strategy gets in the way.
