Unfortunate for Alonso but good on Haas for protesting inconsistency by the FIA.

Was that Tim Cooke waving the checkered flag?
Tim Cook couldn't make it - but he sent his look-alike android to wave the flag in his place.

Great weekend. COTA made a lot of improvements with traffic, busses, vendors, etc. Glad we went again. Race was definitely exciting. Will be hard to decide if we'll try one of the other tracks next year or come back to Austin.
What the shuttle like last year, they had plenty of buses so the line to get on the bus was long but fast, but getting from the shuttle stop to 973 took quite a while and is less than two miles.

When they showed him waving the checkered I got a kick out of his lack of enthusiasm

This will cross the Humblebrag Line, but I'll share anyway. We had encounters with all the drivers and some of the others involved with the teams and F1 with the same tickets we had last year. Our driver encounters were at the track either before qualifying or before the race so it was during work and we found it was really helpful to have a work-related question ready as that is what was on their minds. Before qualifying asking "The car looked a handful in FP3, time to make adjustments before qualifying?" was a good question for Lando.

In no particular order:

  • KMag - he's the best friend you didn't know you had. Stops, puts his hand on your shoulder, and gives a pretty good answer with big smile.
  • Alonso - also just a happy guy. Before the race I thought going out for a beer with KMag and Alonso would be a lot of fun.
  • Albon - oddly enough was very easy to approach as most people left him alone. Probably doesn't mind. He actually ruined a picture I was trying to take by walking into the frame and I was irritated until my wife told me it was Albon and then we could say hello.
  • Max - he's really not a fan of attention so the more people around him the more uncomfortable he gets. If you catch him 1:1 or just a couple of other people then he's happy to wave and smile and say a few words. But once more people see him and the crowd moves his way he really wants to get away.
  • Lando - was much more reserved and shy than I was expecting. Same story as with Max - 1:1 or just one family like us he was fine, but once the selfie-takers show up he wants out.
  • Lewis - he's got this down to a science. Knows when he can interact and limits that to just a few with kids getting the priority. My daughter - not a kid - had a great encounter with him, but once people know he's in the area they'll clear a path for him. Impressed with how he deals with the crowds around him.
  • Carlos - a super-nice guy, but also incredibly focused so he minimized any stops with non-team people. Actually saw him before qualifying and then before the race and he was much less relaxed on Sunday. He does some prep work away from the team that's fun to watch. Ferrari drivers really do get mobbed by the Ferrari fans so it's kind of fun to catch him away from that.
  • Mick - very friendly and a bit uncomfortable with larger groups. But really does get a kick out of being recognized and is also one who can walk long stretches without anyone saying anything to him.
  • Lance - he's an interesting one. Last year he was pretty much trying to avoid talking to anyone and this year he was a bit more approachable. I think he knows what people think of him as a driver so when my daughter said good luck today, Lance he smiled and came over.
  • Charles - he's almost up there with KMag and Alonso. Very low key away from the Ferrari hordes. With them he sounds more like a PR person. But 1:1 and asked a job-related question he's really good. He thought he was going to get up to P6 pretty quickly on Sunday and then it could be tough depending on what the top 5 did strategy-wise.
  • Russell - he's positive and outgoing and always willing to accommodate the selfie army. Scores high on the PR-speakometer, though.
  • Latifi - he seemed a bit down compared to last year, which makes sense. Really just wanted to get from A to B as fast as possible.
  • Esteban - he's a strange one. In one sense he's fairly approachable, but he does give off a don't mess with me vibe. He was the one that made us really laugh, though, so nothing wrong with his sense of humor.
  • Checo - the one we only saw at a distance. Too many fans of the Minister of Defense at COTA. You did know where he was because the volume would give it away.
  • Yuki - holy crap, he's a riot to experience up close. He bounces around quickly so no time foe a "Hey Yuki" type of question, but you'll be smiling when he moves away.
  • Bottas - he's stereotypically Finnish and is very relaxed and calm and seems more like a regular guy than a F1 driver. Probably biggest difference in approach between race suit and casual attire - the latter he's happy to talk, but not dressed for work as much.
  • Zhou - also an under the radar kind of guy and was happy to stop and chat for a minute.
  • Ricciardo - only caught a fleeting glimpse of him.
  • Gasly - was thinking he was going to be a bit more on the KMag end of the spectrum and was little more aloof. Still willing to say hello and maybe we caught him thinking about car set up or something.
  • Seb - really enjoying his farewell tour and almost to the point you're thinking he's not 100% focused on the job, but results say otherwise. He had to get moved along when he stopped and said a few words to us.

F1 does a good job keeping crowds down when you can be around the drivers and teams so it does make it possible to have smaller encounters and exchange words. Rather than getting rushed through a line or something. But it doesn't come cheap.

Our seats were above the Red Bull garage so I have some awesome video of the 4 pitstops during the race looking straight down. The video of 3 of the 4 pitstops are 9 seconds long and then the 2nd one for Max is 21 seconds. Even caught Leclerc entering the Ferrari pit box while Max was waiting for the front left gun to work. Did get it reasonably fixed before Checo's final pitstop, but it wasn't 100%.

And the full read below from the FIA report.

The FIA acknowledges that had RBR applied the correct treatment within its Full Year Reporting Documentation of RBR's Notional Tax Credit within its 2021 submission of a value of 1,431,348, it would have been considered by the Cost Cap Administration to be in compliance with Article 4.1(b) of the Regulations and therefore RBR's Relevant Costs for the 2021 Reporting Period would have in fact exceeded the 2021 Cost Cap by 432,652 (0.37%). On that basis, RBR has accepted the imposition of the following sanctions:

a) RBR must pay a Financial Penalty of USD 7,000,000 to the FIA within 30 days of the date of execution of the ABA (Article 9.5 of the Financial Regulations);

b) RBR receives a Minor Sporting Penalty in the form of a limitation of RBR's ability to conduct aerodynamic Testing during a period of 12 months from the date of execution of the ABA through the application of a reduction of 10% of the Coefficient C used to calculate the individual Restricted Wind Tunnel Testing (RWTT) and Restricted Computational Fluid Dynamics (RCFD) limits applicable to each Team as set out in Article 6 of Appendix 7 to the FIA Formula 1 Sporting Regulations. For example, if the Coefficient C, based on RBR's championship position is 70%, the effective new value of C will be: CNEW=70% x (1-0.10) = 63.0%; and

c) RBR bears the costs incurred by the Cost Cap Administration in connection with the preparation of the ABA.

The decision of the Cost Cap Administration to enter into the ABA constitutes its final decision resolving this matter and is not subject to appeal. Non-compliance by RBR with any terms of the ABA will result in a further Procedural Breach under Articles 6.30 and 8.2(f) of the Financial Regulations and automatic referral to the Cost Cap Adjudication Panel.

How bloated will those costs be? Contractor change order levels?

I read a really interesting article this morning about a driver from the Woodlands/Conroe area trying to make his way up the f1 ranks.
