I'm class of 85 and a former CT. In my day yell leaders did not look like pretty boys walking the streets of Montrose. Yell leaders actually did push ups on the 50 yard line during the beginning of yell practice. The majority of them were contract fighters. Those odd little pushups they do now took really ******ed.

During the "joke" portion of yell practice, the raising of the leg was supposed to be a reenactment of the days when yell practices were held on the steps of the YMCA building and it represented walking up the steps.

ALSO, I remember in the olden days yelling throughout the entire game. We did yells all game long and we were hoarse leaving the game.

I realize this is the millionth thread on this, but it's honestly just painfully sad how lame the yell leaders have become and make no mistake, I am all for yell leaders.

Also in my day, the head yell leader would practice with the football team the week before school started, pads and all. The yell leaders were pretty tough in my day, compared to the soy boys that are currently doing the job.

Finally I really wish the current student body would do yells properly, again discussed on this site millions of times.

Just curious, wtf is the deal during the War Hymn when they shout "YOU!" after singing "the eyes of texas are upon you?"

One last complaint I have, for f#ck sake, it's t.u. not TU!

OP probably pissed about the size of the student body increasing... not teaching cursive in school anymore... music being too loud... things that require an app.... and wants kids to stay off his yard...

OP is 100% spot on. 100%. Class of '96 here.

Along with the "YOU'" in the War Hymn, another thing new army had decided to ruin is The Spirit when they yell "Hump it Ags!" No. Just no.

From what I've gathered this is happening because certain fish camp counselors have crowned themselves agents/arbiters of Aggie traditions and are teaching this crap to incoming students.

Yeah so I'm old, big deal.

Was having a conversation with some beta boy at the South Carolina game two years ago, it was the Rally game.
I was trying to tell this mensa that the horns down thing looks stupid.
He tried to tell me how the Aggies didn't start beating the sips until after we 'demilitarized'.
I looked at this moron and asked him, how many national championships have the Ags won since we 'demilitarized'? He walked away with his tail between his legs.

Traditions are there for a reason. The demise of them speaks volumes.

Remember when those punks from the football team lead by that race baiter Kellen Mond literally assaulted 3 former students standing in front of Sully during the BLM crap?

Had that happened in my time, the entire Cadet Corps would of without batting an eye surrounded Sully and fought the football team. Those thugs on the football team never were punished. They all should of been expelled and thrown in jail.

I hope that OP never had to witness Tra-la-la. That was the beginning of the end of respect for yell leaders for me.

I arrived on campus and was attending games for several years before that. They haven't done real pushups once.

And that is when I stopped caring about anything related to Aggie football. Those POS players that did that, led by the racist Kellen Mond aren't worthy of the Aggie name...and Jimbo Fisher allowed it bc Mond was supposed to be the next JFF (LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL). If Fisher had any stones at all he would be have never let any of the team become involved at all.

And, yes, I agree with OP. The yell leaders are now an embarrassment to the University. And yes, the size of the enrollment is ridiculously high. It's now a diploma mill.

And hell yeah, I want kids to stay off my yard. The little bastages can use the damn sidewalk as intended or walk in the street. Stay of my property.
Covidians, Communists, CNN, FOX, and all other MSM are enemies of the state and should be treated as such.

Unfortunately yes I did. What makes it worse is that the advisor with them was my fish buddy who I had known since Jr High School, the late Rusty Thompson. Great guy, great Aggie, but what a mistake that was.

Regarding the football thugs and Sully, that was the straw that broke the camels back for me. I love being an Aggie. I identify as an Aggie, but after that incident it was clear to me that the values I was taught as a cadet in the early 80's are no long taught at TAMU.
I will never donate to the university again. That season was the first time I didn't pull for the Aggies. I give to the Rudder Association only.
The university is a shell of what it once was. You youngsters don't know what it was like back in the 80's.
You bought your date a mum for every home game as every home game is a homecoming. Girls dressed up for games. The band played loud throughout the game. It is different in a very negative way now. TAMU is now the University of Texas in College Station. That makes this old Ag very sad.

True and true. If I recall there were a couple of track athletes. Nobody talked about it but they were taken to the sully protest thing in a university golf cart.

Problem is, we had the ultimate beta soy boy as at the time as president. See below. I wonder how our current president would have responded.

Of course from the same era, this is the ultimate Aggie embarrassment.

I'm no Sharp fan. But, if you're unhappy with the expanded enrollment, don't blame Sharp. Blame the Texas Legislators who forced the top 10% rule on A&M, while allowing tu to only be required to accept top 6% (recently changed to top 5%). Call your state representative and share your disapproval.

It's also 100% accurate. So many kids today are so soft and absolutely terrified of being different. And standing up for what is right is often different.

This is nothing new. Class of '09 here and the yell leaders already felt hokey and outdated when I first got to A&M twenty years ago. I understand keeping the tradition alive but they need to be revamped and updated in some shape or form while still paying homage to yell leaders of the past. I don't know exactly what would look like but I'm sure someone could figure it out. You can still maintain traditions while modernizing them over time.

Older-than-Boomer Ag here. Pretty much agree with OP but I still go to games. I'll add:

* Oohing and Aahing at the flag rank (no idea what the actual name is) at the start of the halftime drill.
* The "huh" sound when the tubas make their turn. And, yes, I know they're technically not tubas.

Oh , and

I'm probably an old. Certainly old enough to remember when the Yell Leaders didn't…well…flounce.

What I see now is what I imagine is a sip doing a parody of a yell leader.

I can see how it happens. Years and years of people wanting to put their own little twist on it. But then it ends up like so many singings of the national anthem where instead of just singing it they start running through scales showing their range or "interpretation" or some damned thing.

Regarding the Oohing and Aahing, I finally found the story out about that from a b.q. buddy of mine.

So back in the 90's the bugle rank was doing their flurries and a bunch of c.t. zips had their fish start oohing and aahing to fart off the b.q.'s. Then it went crazy afterwards.

Well, didn't you have to do pushups to match your class year. So obviously, when the century rolled over, instead of doing 100 pushups, they started doing 0 and they are just now up to 24 or 25. That resulted in the soy boys we have now.

Thankfully we now have a DJ, minimal yells, and an LED light system next year so that we can enjoy the same gameday experience as every other stadium. It would really suck to go back to the kind of environment where we lost 4 home games in a decade.
