Lewis was sitting on about a 10 - 11 second lead on Max. The estimated pit time under safety car was 14 seconds. Mercedes felt that they would lose track position to Max, so they left him out with the hope that Max would run out of laps before he could catch Lewis.

It was an extremely standard decision - i.e. nobody else would've done it differently in their shoes.

They got screwed by the race director doing something different than they had ever seen.

F1 just needs to get a standard end of race scenario and then stick with it. If they need every race to end under green then figure it out but making it up on the spot like they did was horrific.
Not to mention that it directly contradicted something Masi himself said last year at the Eifel GP:

"There's a requirement in the sporting regulations to wave all the lapped cars past."

https://www.planetf1.com/news/michael-masi-contradicts-lapped-car-clarification/
Regulations say "any", not "all". No dog in the hunt, but that linguistic difference (if any) was used in the RB rebuttal to the stewards post-race.
Not that I disagree, but Masi himself used the exact opposite reasoning a year ago in Eifel when Red Bull complained about a long safety car. So, the precedent for "any" being analogous with "all" was set. So, I don't buy it. I also don't blame RB for using that in their rebuttal, as without the precedent, I would read it the same way.
Interesting, and thanks for the context. This was my first year watching races so I appreciate the historical context and precedents. That makes perfect sense.

How many are taking the Hamilton threat by Toto on not coming back seriously?

I am definitely not. Toto and Lewis and MB are pissed about what happened, but it will wear off by spring testing and they will be back. My opinion.

I have basically come to the conclusion that, if you are a Merc fan, you can't stand Horner, and if you are a RB fan you can't stand Toto.

Personally I think they are about equal in the complaints and drama department.

I'm a Red Bull fan and I like Toto. He's an arrogant ass, but most all of them are. He fights for his team, as he should.

I think he'll go out while he's still on top, but I also think he has a few more years of being a top 2 driver on the grid left. So, I think it's just bluster by Toto, still being pissed off at the FIA and lashing out a bit.

Like Gladiator said, he'll get over it by the time Bahrain rolls around.

At that level of any competitive sport they are all arrogant to some degree, they have to be to be that driven.

I would like to see Maclaren and Ferrari challenge the RB and Merc. A few more at the very top would be better.

I vote for a January 1 change over to the new thread.

Interesting hypothetical situation that could have played out.

As a RB fan I would have been upset if this happened, but rules are rules and wouldn't be calling for them to change anything.

For that scenario in the video, is that going off Hamilton being in P1 at the start of the last lap, and therefore he would get the higher finishing place if they crashed out? Or is it based on who is in P1 at the time of the incident?

That rarely happens. I think the closest we've seen to that in recent years was 2010 when 4 drivers across 3 teams had a mathematical chance of the driver's championship at the last race - Alonso w/ Ferrari, Webber w/ Red Bull, Vettel with Red Bull, and Hamilton w/ McLaren. Vettel was 3rd entering the race and ended up winning the race and his first title.

In 2012 there were 7 different drivers winning the first 7 races, so that was quite interesting as well. By the end of the season it was down to Vettel and Alonso again w/ Vettel taking his 3rd title.

I bet 2022 and beyond sees more close seasons. Liberty and the FIA have been tailoring regs to bunch the group up a little.

We'll see. They are removing more freedom from the designers w/ the tighter regs. At some point you end up with cars all being alike which then defeats the purpose of F1 being a constructors series.
texags08

I think it will still be dominated by the best constructors. The regs will still favor bigger teams because there will always be "loopholes" and bigger teams can afford to exploit them. That includes with the cost cap and wind tunnel restrictions.

Dad joke, ha!

But seriously, no one outside of the UK or it's commonwealth gives a flying **** about him being "knighted".

Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government.

You can't expect to be called Sir just because some watery tart threw a sword at you.

If Max went around saying saying he was a knight just because some watery bint lobbed a scimitar at him, they'd put him away.

Awesome. Is the expectation they just join as an engine supplier or field a full factory race team? Would love for Audi/Porsche to either add an 11th team, but would still be cool if they bought Haas

This part in that article tells me its for engines.

Quote:

F1 is seeking a new manufacturer to join Ferrari, Mercedes and Renault following the departure of Honda, whose engines will now be prepared by Red Bull. Two Volkswagen Group brands, Audi and Porsche, have shown interest, and the former has now indicated it is close to making a commitment.

That's my initial impression as well, but it seems like it would be tough on the finances to have another new engine manufacturer without any new race teams. You already have Renault with only one customer, Red Bull Engines with two, Ferrari with three and Mercedes with four. Renault and Red Bull/Alpha Tauri will likely stay status quo unless Red Bull pulls the plug on their in-house engine experiment, Ferrari and Alpha Romeo are tied at the hip, and Mercedes is obviously going to keep their own engines.

That leaves Haas, McLaren, Aston Martin, and Williams as potential customers to split between three manufacturers (Ferrari, Mercedes, and Audi/Porsche). I could see Haas and/or Williams making the switch to the new group, but even with the cost saving regulations is it economical for each engine manufacturer to only have 1-2 customers? It clearly didn't work for Honda and seems like it would be tough to do without a factory team locked in long term to support the R&D and manufacturing costs.

They won't enter until the new engine regs go into place in 2026. If (big if) every team's finances hold then they'll probably enter as a partner to one team, and depending on how they perform they'll be looking for customers the following year(s).

The problem with starting a new team is the extremely high up front investment. The entry fee for a new team is $200 million. It's much cheaper/smarter to buy and existing team.
