If the race finished right now. Red Bull would lead the constructors cup.

Max needs to cool it just a bit. Burning up those fronts. This track is impossible to pass on, he can hold off Sainz.

Good on Red Bull. Nice to see Mercedes stumble and fumble for once.

Now we have the 2 worst tracks out if the way. Let's get on to Baku, a proper street circuit.

I'm beyond salty that Ferrari managed to eff that wet dream up. Good to see Sainz have a good race.

Always happy to hear Hamilton making an ass of himself.

Really nice results for Vettel and Giovinazzi.

I think the biggest surprise is Norris sitting #3 with more than double the points of Ricciardo.

What an awful race for Mercedes. Poor Bottas and bad strategy call for Lewis. Ricciardo has a lot to contemplate after being lapped by Norris. Sucks for Leclerc.

Here's the Vettel overtake they didn't show (due to the race being broadcast/produced by an independent crew)...

Apparently the tire is still stuck on the car as of this morning.

Looks like we could be in for protests at Baku regarding flexi wings:

https://www.motorsport.com/f1/news/mercedes-warns-f1-flexi-wing-saga-protest-baku/6514653/

For those of you who only recently started following F1, protests are nothing new. I remember they happened pretty frequently back in the '90s and early '00s when teams had unlimited budgets and testing and hence more frequent and substantial updates were brought out during the season.

Thanks for posting the link. Was this rear wing issue a known thing before this article came out? So RB, Ferrari, and Alfa have been running with these supposedly non-compliant parts all season?

Or is it sour grapes because Merc got embarrassed last weekend and so they are diverting the attention elsewhere? Seems like this would have been brought up after Max won at Imola.

No, it's been an issue since at least Spain. The problem is the FIA admitted it is an issue and said new tests will be implemented starting at the French Grand Prix. Nobody cared about Monaco because it is a low speed circuit and the wings provide no gain. Baku, on the other hand, has a very long straight but also has some tight twisty corners, so a flexible wing would provide a large benefit there.

From what I've read it should be treated like DAS was last year.

My understanding is the wing passed the tests required by the FIA prior to the season, seems unfair to change how the test is done. Especially since next year is entirely new regs anyway.

There's a rule in the regs that says the FIA is allowed to make up new tests if they feel the spirit of a rule isn't being followed.

How dare anyone try to get a competitive advantage while remaining at the very edge of the rules given.

Not a shot at you, just the stupidity of that. You have teams spending billions of dollars of R&D over the years to build the fastest car that meets a set of rules given to them just to be able to get pissy and make a new test.

This quote from Toto on the whole issue shows the attitude that's driving some of my annoyance.

Quote:

Wolff has dismissed worries that rival Red Bull could protest Mercedes' flexible front wing in a counter attack, as he suggests that there is a strong legal case behind any action his outfit takes to sort the matter in Baku.

"We've analysed the front wings, and they are bending exactly the same way as the Red Bull - so we could be protesting each other on the front wing also," he said.

If Merc agrees their front wing is just as against the spirit of the rule as Red Bull it's seems pretty lame to complain about Red Bull doing the same thing with the rear wing.

https://www.gpblog.com/en/news/85268/f1-commentator-russell-signs-for-two-years-with-mercedes-as-bottas-replacement.html

Quote:

f we are to believe Alexey Popov, Valtteri Bottas will no longer drive for the Mercedes team in 2022. According to the Russian Formula 1 commentator, the 31-year-old driver will be replaced by George Russell. The talented Williams driver is reported to have already reached an agreement on a two-year commitment.

This is what Popov says in conversation with Match TV, the broadcasting agent of Formula 1 in Russia. "I will not disclose the source, but there is always a lot of talk in the paddock in Monaco," he says. So last week, during the Grand Prix weekend, Popov learned that Bottas is going to be pushed aside after five seasons of service.

"They told me that Russell moving to Mercedes for at least two years, and not in Hamilton's place, is already practically done," said Popov, who further believes Bottas may just take over Russell's seat at Williams. "That's just my guess, but the fact that Russell will be in the Mercedes is almost certain," New regulations also enter Formula 1 in 2022 and perhaps Williams can make a leap forward on the grid then, making snaring Bottas a possibility.

The Finn is not hiding his desire to become world champion in the pinnacle of motorsport, but it doesn't look like it's going to happen in 2021. He is already 58 points behind World Champion Max Verstappen. Popov knows that too. "He is hopelessly behind both Hamilton and Verstappen already. He's out of the title fight completely. Even Norris is ahead of him now."

I've been lurking for a while now. I've kept up with the sport much more since watching Drive to Survive over quarantine but have been a casual since going to the first USGP at COTA when I was in HS in 2012. Hamilton won that race, so I've been a casual fan of his and Mercedes since.

Apparently that is the way that they change the torque rotation on those guns. I guess it is a faster way to switch back and forth.
