Who will we pitch today?

Will we have a dedicated game thread over on this board?

I did the game threads for road games last year. I thought Frankie or one of the other out of state fans did the home games. Loved coming home after the game and reading back through the game thread

Actually I now I remember I started them all and Frankie did the updates. I will start one and hope someone will update it during the game

What a great turnout today for the Tech record 2880 inside the stadium and 400-500 watching from the outfield. Definitely larger crowd than we saw at the regional last year which was pretty good. They didn't get to see a win but they did see a couple heavy weight teams in a good battle.

Rough start for Lessentine who obviously had the adrenaline pumping early and lacked some control. From a season long perspective she will be better off having experienced that if she can learn from it. That was a big moment in front of a big crowd. There will be several more big moments and big crowds this year and most of them with more on the line than tonight. Learning to handle those emotions will be important moving forward.

Most impressive part of the game to me was that Kate and Sidne came in out of the pen and gave up 1 and no walks or hit batters in 4 innings of work. Everyone focuses on Canady. She is the best player in the country so I understand that. However this Tech team has the best batting lineup in the country. They were able to get the top portal player at every position. They have players on the bench that were the best players in their conference last year. Handling those bats and only giving up one unearned run was huge.

Defense has had moments of less than stellar play this weekend. It cost A&M a game today. Hopefully this is a wakeup call for the defense. I understand that Tallen is a gold glove player playing a new position, Wark has mostly been a DP now playing first and all 3 outfielders are listed on the roster as infielders. Frankie who started playing outfield last year is the most experienced outfielder. All that being said most of the errors this weekend have been communication errors that need to be cleaned up by next weekend.

I love Maddie behind the plate. She is another one who needs to lock in for 7 innings. She has shown to be a more than capable receiver. However as the game goes on she has a Haley Lee type tendency to lose focus on securing the catch. I think half the strikes outs today bounced out of her glove. Hopefully that gets fixed before it has the chance to bite us.

Overall I think we saw this A&M team can be mentioned in the same group with the best teams in the country this year. They have the pitching and the bats. They have some good team speed. Need to cleanup the defense. I think the bats will only continue to improve. We haven't seen KK, AK or Maddie hit their stride yet at the dish. I am pretty excited were this can go

Another excellent after action report by Boozer92 - thank you.

Almost. Almost. Tech scored the go-ahead run in the Top of the 5th after a couple of boo boos by the Ags. In the bottom of the inning with one on and two outs Ariel (aka AK) came close to taking the lead with a hard shot to CF but it was not quite long enough. Would have been awesome if it had left the park. Or if she had just got on because Mya was up next. We had a great response to their 1st inning with two runs in the bottom of the inning and it would have been another great response if we would have got two or more right after they had gone ahead. But ...

The other night at Rudy's the guy (always forget his name) called Tech the "travelling all-star team". Tech has money and has brought in a ton of talent. Three All-Americans in the last transfer class to go along with Canady from the year before and there might be another one or even two on the roster. As Boozer92 mentioned, they have awesome talent ... as backups! I think Tech has equalled the sips and sooners at being able to bring in the best of the best.

After our Fall season I had questions about our pitching and hitting.

Our pitching has really worked out well so far. Unfortunately, Lessentine's early adrenaline did not lead to just a few inconsequential singles but to two quick homers that put us in a quick hole. But she settled down and did really well against one of the best hitting teams in the country. I STILL think she is our #1 pitcher and am STILL a HUGE fan. I WAS a bit concerned when Coach sent in Munnerlyn next instead of Sidne because last year she tended to give up some big hits at the wrong times but she responded brilliantly. I was impressed. Then Sidne came in and did the same. I was really, REALLY impressed with the three last night. I mentioned it during the game and Boozer92 brought it up - we gave up 0 BB and 0 HBP last night. Those have hurt us a LOT in big games the past several years.

But in four games this year, after 24 IP, our staff has given up only 2 walks. Only two. This is great.

Last year Coach Ford talked a lot about using multiple pitchers in each game. Basically, so each opposing hitter would not see the same pitcher twice and to give them a different look and style of pitching each time they came up to bat. But she did not do that as much as I thought she would. I think she did it well tonight. IF Grace and Taylor B. can also do well this year - wow !!

Hitting. Only four hits on the night. One was huge. But, again, we were facing a monster pitcher. A million dollar (twice) pitcher. We DID hit the ball really hard at times but, unfortunately, right at someone. Canady usually strikes out a ton of hitters but only five last night. She does have a tendency to walk some batters but 0 last night. Darn it. After she gave up the homer she settled down (just like Lessentine). Overall, I think we did really well against her although not quite enough.

Defense. Still think it (and base-running) will be a strength this year. We have had several boo boos this year. Costly ones. BUT, we are only four games into the season - this WILL get better.

Good 'catch' (pun intended) by Boozer92 on Maddie not focusing on actually securing the catch. I was primarily a catcher in my youth (backup 3B) and one of my coaches always preached "your primary task is to CATCH THE BALL. That includes holding on to it after the catch!" But that was a long time ago and I missed it. Shame on me. But I really dig Maddie. Highly rated. Followed by Ford for many years. I think she will work it out and be a star for us.

Please recall the Fall games. Many of us had a lot of questions and concerns. Hitting and pitching, mostly. But I think those questions have been answered. I think we have a ton of talent in the field and on the mound and I think the few issues will be ironed out and we will be very successful this season.

To close (YEAAAA, the crowd shouts !!), I will say this ...

I used the phrase toe-to-toe in a comment during the game. Kayla Gaither used it in the first sentence of her TexAgs article this morning. I think it is perfect. We went toe-to-toe with the #1 ranked team in the country. The National Runner Up that brought in even more talent in the portal. (I think they would have won it all last year if they had another really good pitcher after Canady). A professional team of All-Stars. We gave up only two earned runs against them, a team that usually scores a LOT of runs. We ALMOST beat one of the best pitchers in softball history. To paraphrase old thoughts - we lost on the scoreboard but we won big time because of what we found out about our team. I am soooo proud of their performance last night - Aggie Softball Rocks !!

I was really hoping to see Grace or Taylor B start. But perhaps we will see one or both today.

HOWEVER, we have only seen Taylor P. once so far this season so she does need the innings since we will probably use her a LOT.

With 2 outs and a 1-2 count Providence banged a ball over the fence in CF.

Taylor P. gets her second SO on an 0-2 pitch, ends the inning. Headed to bottom of 1st, PC leads 1-0.

PC had a 1-0 lead on us on Friday but we came and won the game 9-1 in six.

WARK flied into double play cf to 3b (2-1 KBB); PEREZ advanced to second; KOWALEWSKI out on the play.
PEREZ hit by pitch (1-0 B); KOWALEWSKI advanced to second.
KOWALEWSKI singled up the middle (1-2 KBF).
POWELL grounded out to 2b (0-2 KK).

PC outfielder made a great throw to get Ariel (aka AK) trying to get to 3B.

Headed to Top of 2nd.

Taylor P. gets her 3rd SO of the game on the leadoff.

Foul out.
Taylor gets 4th SO on a 1-2 count.
Taylor gets 5th SO on a 1-2 count.

Headed to bottom of the 3rd. PC still up 1-0. Need some offense.

Back to top of the order.

AK hit it hard but I'm not sure I've ever seen an official scorer give a player a hit there as opposed to an error. But ours just did. The ball literally went thru their 1st baseman's legs.

Powell scores on a wild pitch

Annsley called out after a challenge - left early. Now runner at 3rd with one out. I think this is her second base running boo boo this year.

They practice stealing all the time, *ucks when they get called on a leaving early.

Groce is headed to the end of the line as pinch runners go.

There was a situation Friday where she stayed on first when a ball got by the catcher and didn't take the open base. The coaches were quite upset.

With no out today, she was just called out for leaving 1st base early on a steal attempt with runners at first and third and none out. A situation where Providence didn't even throw down.
frankie00

Micaela walks, runners at the corners with one out. Need some runs!

I think should stay with Hailey and Scout as PR's. They did great last year. Both smart base runners. Groce is fast but boo boos are a big no no.

Piper in as PR for Micaela at 2B. (right after I suggest Hailey and Scout !!)

Edwards bloops a hit over short.

One scores. Second runner thrown out.

Expect an overturn here for their catcher blocking the plate.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
Might say catcher had the ball already when Piper started the slide. But this rule is weird, could go either way.

After review, obstruction by their catcher.

Rule obstruction, Piper safe, score now 3-1 Ags !!!
Runners at 2nd and 3rd with one out, Kelsey at the plate.

I agree with you after watching the replay.

The Providence coaches are telling the ump that isn't how the rule is supposed to work.

Kelsey gets a SAC fly, Ags up 4-1, Gracyn at the plate. Runner at 3rd

C'mon, Gracyn !!!
