Those of you with stars, there's a new article in Premium today that address the roster questions pretty thoroughly... staying, going, incoming, transfers, etc. Our team is going to look as different from '22 to '23 as it did '21 to '22, which might just be reality. I don't love it for the players, especially the younger ones and hs graduates, but the competition level for spots at big schools just went way up with the available pool of players from graduate transfers and the portal.
I think adjusting the portal and transfer rule vaults to my #1 wish for college baseball, ahead of now #2 increased scholarships and #3 additional paid coaches.

Competition and playing time go hand and hand, so no. I'll leave it private. But he's a kid that tops at 98 when healthy, and threw 97 in the Spring with a suture impinging on his funny bone, which is very painful. Crazy stuff

I thought July 1st was the deadline to enter the portal. I don't think it's a final date for rosters.
July 1st is the deadline to renew or not renew scholarships as well.
If scholarship money exists it can be given out after 7/1. When you hope a guy like Werner stays and it's a possibility, you can't give away his money. If he gets drafted and signs you can give it out to a new player or spread it out to players already on scholarship.

With all they require these kids to do, how much they are away from home and school, the extra expenses on families, how they treat and cut and mess with their lives year to year - having 11.7 scholarships is about one of the most stupid things invented. Whomever came up with that idea I hope lived a long life with explosive dysentery issues.
It should be head count scholarships or at least 50% to entire team that can be increased as needed.

It was the NCAA schools in the north that did it. They don't have the type of fan support and resources that many southern programs fans have. 15-20 years ago (somewhere around there), there were something like 16 scholarships per team and the north schools voted to reduce it to 11.7. They also forced a delay in the start of the season. Opening day used to be the first week in February.

Yes. This happened while I was in school in 1987. They reduced scholarship numbers across the board for "Olympic" sports, tried to impose "restricted earnings coaches" until the courts shot that down as an anti-trust violation, reduced the number of regular season baseball games from 60 to 54, and pushed back the starting date.EMY92 said:

His dad is Jason Hutchins who pitched for the Ags and in the majors.
He has been head of baseball operations at A&M for a really long time.

So how did he not end up at TAMU the first go around? What's the story there…
I have no insight other than Jace pitched for Blinn JC in 2021 which was his first college season in which he pitched.

I believe Jace has had injuries resulting in very limited opportunities to pitch.

Jason only pitched in the minors.
This sounds logical I didn't know if there was any more to it.
D1's transfer tracker now confirms Brauny's premium post that Jace Hutchins is headed to A&M.

Our pitching staff is going to be on another level next year.
I really hope Schloss can talk Werner into staying, unless he somehow goes really early on! Then I'd be pumped for him.

Jace played very little in high school. Wasn't even on RC's radar as a player. He was a GREAT teammate though. Didn't really have many opportunities for college ball. Went to Blinn and absolutely exploded with size and his fastball responded. His fb is a full 10-12 mph faster than when he was in HS.
