We technically have zero spots open. But there are 3 ways we could add new players.

1. We can have Quentin come back using the free covid year.
2. We can accept a transfer that is using his free covid year who otherwise would be out of eligibility (the equivalent of a guy in Flagg or Chandler's place that transfers to A&M)
3. We can accept any other transfer, but it would require one of our current players to leave.

I guess that is my point. I don't know every rule of free Covid year and transferring but if we have to have people leave to get a transfer portal player that doesn't bode well with who you recruited already. Attrition and movement are completely changed but if we have to find a way to get a player off the team to add another Marfo like this past year that can't be a good sign to those currently on scholarship here.
He was behind the 8 ball his first recruiting year but that was the programs choice to let the players out of the LOI

To contact at least 10-15 guys that have entered the portal already even if three or four come where do we find room for them. I don't think you get the free year if you transfer or do you ?? Or you get the free year but aren't eligible immediately next year ?? Not sure of rule with Covid otherwise this off season transfer portal will be huge free agency

If you watched this team you shouldn't have any problems if they run a couple of folks off.

I think at most we bring in 2 guys from the portal. 3 maybe if one is a big and you can send Aku packing.

We won't get 3 or 4 transfers. It will be like one grad transfer who doesn't count against the limit and one transfer who does require someone to leave. Or maybe two grad transfers and no attrition required.

And if one of the 2020 class ends up leaving this summer, it shouldn't be shocking or be taken as a larger statement on something wrong with the program. When you take a large class, you have to know some of the guys won't work out, for various reasons. I think you need to be hitting on around half your recruits, land 1-3 solid guys every class, 3-5 every two years. If you take a large class like we did in 2020 (4 HS guys), it gives you some room to fail but also almost guarantees some will eventually leave.

I completely agree with that. I just don't know how it affects players when we are chasing pretty much everyone who enters the portal it seems. Just based on tweets alone that are above we are linked to a lot of players.
I give Buzz his space to work the magic he did at other schools but year one and year two have been underwhelming compared to teams like Arkansas and Alabama which were is sane not we were when they got hired as coaches

How did Arkansas get better? They completely overhauled the roster this year. They had 10 new players on their roster who this year was their first year to play at Arkansas. 10!

It doesn't affect other players at all.

Players know the game these days.

Our current players except Miller and Gordon have only shown they can catch covid at an above average level.

You are including Gordon in the Miller category?

Gordon isn't nearly as good as Miller at this point, but he has shown he's capable of playing in the SEC (albeit very inconsistent at best and not necessarily as a starter). I don't know if we can say that about any of the other guys at this point.

Three of the freshmen who are starting were pretty highly rated from a top 10 recruiting class including Moody who was SEC FOTY. Then Musselman likes bringing in either all-conference transfer players from mid-major conferences or players who averaged at least 10/5 at a major conference that fit the system really well like Justin Smith from Indiana.

Not going to hit on all of them though, took transfers like Vanover from Cal and Vance Jackson from New Mexico who aren't playing at all now.

Yeah, nobody is saying Gordon is as good as Miller, but I think Gordon has shown enough that I'm confident he could at least be a rotation player on an NCAA Tournament quality team.

Not saying he's not solid, but he's not a difference maker. He dribbled too much and has a hard time creating his own shot. His outside shooting is streaky at best. I guess I still have that 1-for-11 shooting performance in the last game fresh in my memory.

Long term, Diarra is better built for the PG role and has higher ceiling. I'd like to see what he does with an actual offseason.

I mean that's what we're talking about, Gordon may not be a difference maker, but we've already seen that he's at least good enough to play a role. We haven't even seen that from anyone else.

I also think part of why he has a hard time creating his own shot is because we're so bad in the post and elsewhere on the perimeter. That's kind of a chicken and egg thing for me with Gordon. Defenders could leave our guys wide open and cheat off of our bigs and we couldn't do anything about it. Give Gordon a big that could at least finish a lob pass and there's going to be a lot more room in the middle of the court.

I like Diarra also, but to say he can be a starter on an NCAA Tournament-quality team is projecting a lot of improvement on him. He turned the ball over at an unbelievable clip most of last season.

But I think with a regular offseason they could both make a big jump.

Here's our 2022 roster right now in my opinion:

Potential All-American Caliber Players: 0
Potential All-SEC Caliber Players: 1 (Miller)
Definite Quality SEC Starters: 0
Definite Quality SEC Rotation players: 1(2?) (Gordon (Jackson?))
Players that have at least shown some reliable skill level that they could project as any of the above: 1 (Diarra)
Players that have played a lot of minutes but haven't proven that they're any of the above: 1 (Aku)
Players that we have no idea because they didn't play enough: Literally everyone else

I think you need one more category for the mythical beast known as Cassius McNeilly.

I personally like what Diarra brought especially on defense. All the other freshman I have no idea. Robinson has great length but didn't play. I think Bradford is the one guy I can see leaving if we get a non grad transfer. Aku needs to stay if we don't get another big but he is what he is. Hefner has nice looking shot but didn't knock it down and then started playing less as year goes on.

I am intrigued how this turns out after tournament ends.

Sounds like we have a staffer hitting refresh and emailing everyone that enters the portal to set up a zoom meeting. Not a bad strategy to stay on top of this many names.

I remember when Turgeon was here I would see every recruit had a Baylor offer and I was like "why aren't we doing that?"

It seems like the talk on here has been that it takes awhile to adjust to Buzz's system/culture. Do you think that we could pull the same type of turnaround?

I dont know I think it takes time to adjust to buzz's system/culture and that is impacting winning. Not sure I buy that. That's not the reason we struggled this year. Lack of talent is the #1 reason we struggled this year.

So yes if Buzz brought in the talent that Arkansas did he could turn it around quickly. We don't have a top 10 recruiting class (its a good recruiting class) and key transfers at this point though.
bobinator

Yeah I think it's more complicated than just "it takes time."

From a culture standpoint, I think it's probably very helpful to have some players in the program that know what the expectations are at practice and in the offseason and that sort of thing. And we'll have that, even if they aren't our better players, it's still helpful. We didn't have that in the first year obviously.

From an x's and o's standpoint, it just depends on how the pieces fit together. It's not like basketball is a super complicated sport. If you have good overall talent and you can do multiple things well then it's pretty easy to scheme up.

Now, our weird ass defense takes some time for guys to get used to playing. I'm sort of hopeful that if our talent level increases we'll ditch it and play man to man or a true matchup zone.
