A little sous vide and Saturday night's dinner was spectacular.

1775 in College Station today. Brisket very good, hot sausage good but a little dry. Pork ribs were very good. Their potato salad not my thing. Very different and I thought bland. I'd try something different next time. Open Thursday through Saturday.

C&C on Smetena Road in Bryan is very good too. Only open Saturday and Sunday.

I don't know why anyone would eat BBQ anywhere else in BCS.

Does Texas Monthly do the top 50 BBQ every year, or was that just a one time thing? The reason I as is my 14yo daughter's best friend's father has a hole-in-the-wall bbq joint in Beasley, Texas (40 min south of Houston, 15 min south of Sugar Land) called the BBQ Barn. A few days ago, a guy came in and ordered ribs and some brisket to go. He came back 30 min later and asked who was the cook, and what else is good. He sat and ate some chicken, two kinds of sausage, and another thing or two. The owner had just gotten back from a funeral, and went to meet the guy at the table since he asked about the cook. The guy said he was a writer for Texas Monthly, took some pics, and said he would come back in a couple of weeks for an interview.

They do it every few years. They probably comb the state for a while then start to compile the top list starting in 2021 or so.

Every 4 years or so for the Top 50... but supplement each year with a Top 10 "New Places to Try" that don't have the same length of service requirements as the Top I expect to see Panther City, Louie's and Brett's Backyard BBQ on this years list...

They do it every four years, but every 2 years in between they put out a list of best new and improved bbq joints since the last list came out. I'm sure it was Daniel Vaughn, as he was in the gulf coast/South TX area last week based on his Twitter. They're doing the research for that list right now.

Think TM has said that they are going to start doing the list every two to three years from now on.

I believe I read this as well. Pretty disappointed with the last list, though - they shook things up a lot, but left Louie Mueller in the top ten. We've discussed this here before, but I have had countless better BBQ meals than my visit to LM. Killen's, Black's, Pecan Lodge, the Pit Room, and Valentina's, to name five that spring to mind and aren't in the top ten.

Killen's is the only one of those you mention that I've been to but I was underwhelmed as well. The Pearland people I was meeting later that day told me I should have gone to Central Texas BBQ.

Pit Room didn't even make Allison Cook's top 100 in Houston

Black's? Seriously? The two times I've been there is was awful.

I've been to every single place you mentioned and haven't had a better bbq meal at any of them than I have at LM, but to each their own! Valentina's and Killen's did come close though.

It's possible my one trip to Louie Mueller was an off day, but none of us liked the brisket at all. Like, worse than some mall BBQ.

I've been to Killen's at least half a dozen times and it's been great all but once.

I'm not holding Black's up as a top ten place, it isn't, it's just better than my trip to Louie Mueller. Also, I was at Black's in January and it was the best meal I've ever had there. I've been four or five times now.

While I agree with you that LM doesn't deserve top 10 status, I think Black's and Pecan Lodge are both incredibly over rated and not even deserving of top 50 any more. PL went way downhill after they moved. Black's is just mediocre bbq in the FORMER bbq capital of Texas. Enter CDub to disagree with me on LM and Black's...

It's possible that I've been to LM on an off day as well, 15 times...ha. My in-laws live in Taylor and I've given it so many tries. Brisket on a stick is about the only thing worth going for IMO.

I feel about Black's how you feel about LM. I don't think I've had a more disappointing BBQ meal in my life when it came to expectations vs. reality

Valentina's is awesome and should be ranked very high.

I have been to blacks a number of times. Never had a bad or off meal there. I would put them in the ranks of of truth and corkscrew, which I think are some of the best around. To not include blacks seems pretty fraudulent. And blacks has great hours of service and manageable lines to boot. Im just talking strictly about their bbq, not the sides or sauce they offer.

This was my tray when I went to Black's in Lockhart in July. The sausage was the best thing I ate. Asked for fatty brisket. I was bummed

The one thing that I love at Blacks is the beef rib. Judging by this pic, I wouldn't trust them to smoke one now.

Man that looks absolutely horrendous

Oh look, another blacks and LM debate, we haven't had enough of those yet.

Not to pick on anyone in particular but I do laugh when I see the comment "well the one time I went years ago...." give a place a couple or three tries before passing final judgement on it, that's all I can say. I thought LM was bad the very first time I went too, the other 10+ times I've been it's very good. Pretty much everyone not name Aaron Franklin has an off day every now and again and people just flat out change their styles over time. I remember on a tales from the pits episode with feges bbq or someone like that the guy talked about fine tuning his ribs and how it took a long time.

And I'd be disappointed if they moved to every 2 years for the list, 3 might not be too bad, but how it is right now with 4 is just fine IMO. Kinda waters it down if it's released too frequently. Just do a newcomer top 10 list yearly like they are already doing. Basically I really like the format they have right now. Takes awhile for some of us to get around to more than just the closest 4 or 5 and would suck if the list was changing all the time.

Just reading this first sentence, and without the capitalization, I thought I had wandered into the politics forum! XD

I will try to refrain from dogging LM for the thousandth time when next it's mentioned, unless opinions are explicitly solicited.

It's fair to say that a well-founded opinion should be based on several visits, but in my life, if a place disappoints the first time, they frequently don't get another shot - especially when I have to drive out of my way to get there. I do take pains to mention that it was only one visit; that's intentional.

I think every 4 years is still a good time frame, it gives the judges enough time to try out places multiple times. After they are established places, meaning the reader can feel confident those places will be open a year or two after the list is published (exception: Brazos BBQ in Cresson.) I'm in the favor of the top 10 new places to try on a yearly basis, as it gives the reader options to try that they might not have heard of (i.e. Black Board BBQ in Sisterdale.)

As to Louie's versus Black's, well, that's like, well, your opinion, man. I have my opinions, based on multiple visits each location. I've shared them here. If you don't agree, well, that's like, well, your opinion, man. Best thing in the world, is that we can eat wherever we want to. #thedudeabidea

I think the one thing that we can all agree on, however, is that good BBQ is worth eating. And I think this thread encourages all of us to eat the best barbecue we can find.

That being said, I plan to have a nice tray of great barbecue and Evie Mae's on Friday morning. If any of you happen to be in the neighborhood, feel free to join us. The wife and I intend to arrive between 10 -10:30am on our way to Ruidoso.

P.S. we plan to have dinner tomorrow night at Vagabond Pizza in Abilene. (Aggie owned and operated!)

Im sure once we move to the next page we can have the Mickelthwait is overrated discussion.

Or someone from the outdoors board will slide through saying how all the places suck if you cant immediately walk up to the counter and they dont know your name and order by heart.

No. We'll say you suck if you can't smoke your own brisket and ribs!!
