Awesome project! Can't wait to see the rest of the progress. You've almost inspired me to find a similar property in Dallas...

So, new glass for the front transom after I broke one of the panes. My first glazing job.

Still needs paint of course.

Fought with the ancient wall furnace for an evening, but can't keep the pilot lit. Not really necessary right now but it was a couple of weeks back. Finding a thermocoupler for something that is 50/60 years old ain't so easy.

Finally decided the drafty broken windows needed to be eliminated as well.

I've never done anything like this before either. But, these windows were built to be repaired.

The worst offender:

Basically, it had just completely come apart. Some glue and a screw got it back together after some effort.

It needed replacement trim as well.

So the girl that used to "live" in the place had a little rat dog that chewed up the mullions in the lower sash of two of the front windows, which made a simple glass repair an issue.

Being lazy for right now and not wanting to search for a replacement set of mullions I swapped out two sashes from other windows in the home that had decent glass and were already painted a matching green. ( not an easy task to located two in the place like that.

I still have some drywall work of course. And I still need to clean the upper sashes, and I bought the wrong size rope for the pulley weights and replace the trim and paint... oye.

So, that's about it.

She's got functional windows in the front room and those broken screens are now off. Hazzah.

You ever think about just making mullions?
p_bubel
How long do you want to ignore this user?
That's well beyond my abilities. I can have them made, but I'm going to see how this plays out with the dining room windows first.

I will be removing a window at the rear of the home that currently opens out into the enclosed patio. It's in great shape and will be used in swapping out the dinning room lower sashes. Those sashes then should give me enough spare parts to fix the remaining windows. There's also a kitchen window that needs to be replaced with a shorter version so I can get cabinets underneath.

At least that's how it works out in my head. ( I really should stop listening to myself )

I'm not that worried about getting dumber. This project has proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that I'm already not very bright.

Visiting. My only remaining direct relatives live in the general area, and none of the people I used to hang out with in SA have seen the baby yet so he's coming with. Probably around March-April but nothing has been booked yet.

So, infilled the boards on the front wall which was a lot harder than I figured. (of course) And placed the 2X6 "header" for the wall opening. It's overkill, but now done. I re-used the old nails for the front side of the boards which made it all the more interesting.

The living room is getting closer to being "done."

And by "done" I mean not an absolute total effin disaster.

I was getting ready to ask about the small closet but then noticed the size of the door and realized it must have been added later.

Floor in the next room over looks like it's in good shape. Does it carry over into the room you're working in? Don't you have to add an outlet on that wall within 6' of the doorway?
p_bubel
How long do you want to ignore this user?
The closet was a later addition for sure. The closet, and the threshold/door to the dining room behind the this room were placed on top of the vinyl flooring in the living room. The closest was of a different type of wood, scraps it looks like, than the rest of the place.

The wood in the dining room continues under the vinyl, but I'm not sure how or when I'll try and get that up at this point. In fact the wood floors appear to run continuously under the walls as well. It's currently protecting the wood during construction. I'm estimating from the construction that the vinyl is pretty damn old.

It's been suggested I keep it for now, by people with better taste than I. Lightly sand the rough patches and add a layer of poly on top. It's a cool pattern, and I kind of like the idea, but am still undecided. Crack-head chic I guess. I'm also not sure on the asbestos content if it turns out to be newer than I suspect it is.

It's glued down VERY well. So it's going to take some effort to remove.

I'm a fan of the pattern too, for what it's worth. People pay big dollars for encaustic that looks like that.

Does anyone have a better way to clean decades of funk off of old windows? Been using the strongest stuff I can find out of cans from the box stores and cleaning supply places with little to show for it.

/stupid thing to be worried about right now.

Thanks y'all.

I do know that where I used the razorblade it's better. That's a lot razorblading. I'm going to buy one of everything suggested at this point.

Goof Off removed spilled fingernail polish off our white bathroom cabinets and tile floor. I bet it will work for you!
