Oh and, the rear chimney foundation has failed. So, that has to come down pronto. It's pushing through the wall.

That's fun.

Luckily the chimney no longer goes through the roof so it's just a matter of pulling the brick down.

So that's the past couple of months. It was too cold for a lot of work over the winter, now too damn hot to spend all day there without some window units running.

But it's moving along finally, and it should start coming together a lot quicker than before. When I said this was going to take a long time at the beginning of the thread I wasn't joking. The 20th marks two years. Oye.

On top of that, I'm leaving my job next week to hang my own shingle. What could possibly go wrong?

19 years ago I switched jobs, switched banks, and moved in the span of a week. I thought that was the epitome of nuts. Then about five years ago I got laid off twice in seven months and had my truck stolen in between. Makes for a hell of a ride, but it's amazing what you can do when you have to.

Great progress!

So you have a working toilet now?

Looking good, wish I was making progress like that! Still held for engineering for another week... renovation life is imitating work right now.

Love the color!

A rear covered porch (especially screened in) isn't a bad alternative.

I want to put the porch back in, but I really need the space for a laundry and bedroom closet.

I'm waiting on pricing to see if we put the walls and floor back up as is or tear the roof down and build back another 5 or so feet.

Fun times.

A very rough and quick idea:

The door is getting closed off and the window made into a doorway for a bedroom closet. A very small one.

I still have to get approval, but I'm sticking with the same color for the body of the house. It grew on me.

The 1925 house we just bought in East Texas has that same thin wood siding on it. Does it have a specific name? Do you know the type of wood your siding made out of? Most of ours is in good shape, but there are a few areas of rot. One contractor told us they don't make that size siding anymore, so to get some custom made would require placing an order far in excess of what we would need. Does that sound right?
p_bubel

I don't know what they called it, it's not a standard size or cut unfortunately. I had to have some milled, which was expensive. I ripped some out of the enclosed patio to finish off the rest as you can see in the photo. It is Douglas Fir.

I've since heard that McCoys carries a pretty similar style but I have not checked it out yet.

If you can find a place to sacrifice the existing for use elsewhere that's the easiest route.

In either case, if it were me, I'd put a pocket door in place of the standard swing door to the closet! You'll thank me later!
p_bubel

That's not a bad idea. I'll give it some thought but I doubt I can get to work without major modification to that old exterior wall.
The Fife

With a floorplan like this I'd be tempted to have the door swing into the bedroom/to the left. You'd free up more space in the closet for storage.
p_bubel
How long do you want to ignore this user?
That's also very possible, and probably the easiest route. I'll know more once the decking goes in and the spaces are laid out.

Mr Dubi took a 36" bifold door and made a mini french door for our master closet. They swing out.

What started as an end to the foundation work, got a little out hand. As these things do. A new guy was hired to finish off the rear back corner of the house. Several days later the entire rear of the structure has been redone and the front re-shimed.

He got the place damn near 100% level. The rear came up another 5 inches as did the right side of the house. Some new, taller, piers and some more joist repair. She's rocking like she hasn't been in decades.

My rear chimney:

All Laredo Brick. It's going to be shoved under the house in case I decide to reuse it at a later date.

Was hoping for Mackey Brick, because I'm a dork.

Lastly, the remaining drywall is gone.

Found yet another doorway. How many do you need?

I wish I could keep the exterior wall exposed, it's all 1"x12"s and in great condition. But there's no real way to insulate so it's getting drywalled.

And that's it for tonight.

Great job getting the place leveled! It's totally worth it to get rid of all the sticking and weirdly cut doors, not to mention any time you have to deal with cabinets or countertops anywhere.

If I make it to TX this Thanksgiving I'll have to drive by to take a look in person.

Meant to swing by and look for your place last weekend. Was staying with some good friends that live on Divine and own a place on Sadie across St. Mary's from you.

Everyone is welcome to stop by, there's always beer in the left over medical mini-fridge.

By the way, ordered three 14"x36" vintage glass replacement panes. Holy hell, it's like liquid gold apparently.
