Are you matching some adjacent existing glass or just trying to keep it period correct?
p_bubel
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Just trying to match the three other panes on the window.

I was planning on swapping new glass for old in the back of the home and moving that old glass up to the front rooms where it's visible.

But, I keep breaking panes trying to get them out. Whatever they used for "glazing" is impervious to everything I've thrown at it so far. It's amazing stuff!

Did you level the house yourself or hire out?
p_bubel
How long do you want to ignore this user?
General contractor did it the first time, an actual foundation guy redid some of it this time.

You win some, you lose some. Almost all of it was fine, the general contractor didn't push the leveling hard enough (The noise is unsettling) That's something I guess comes with experience.

I see they poured concrete in the sonotubes. How far Dow. Did they dig? Did they pour a footer or just the columns?
p_bubel

There's a small footer, and they're now about 3' deep.

Just saw this thread a few days ago. Enjoyed the read. I work for a commercial GC here in SA, but grew up in residential in the hill country so looking forward to keeping up with your progress and stopping by at some point.

What did you do!?!

While-I'm-at-it-ism is a cruel, cruel mistress.

Getting my laundry/pantry and bedroom closet. The entire rear enclosure was a loss so I might as well do it now.

I tried to get that old kitchen sink vent cut down too, but I'm much more of a pansy at those heights than I care to admit... which I just did. I'm going to pay someone to cut it down I think.

The new metal roof should be on before the week is over and the rest primered by Friday. For what I hope is a temporary structure this little "might as well" has been a significant side track to the overall progress over the past couple of weeks. It's not 100% complete, but pretty close.

Blech. But, I'll have a *****en laundry/pantry and closet.

The lack of rear windows is ungainly, but there's no good reason to add 'em where they're not needed.

I do have a question though, which is why I'm posting this before "complete." What to do with the tankless water heater? I'm open to suggestions. The more I think about it, the more I don't want to see it every time I go to the backyard. Are there concealment options available. I can't imagine is would be kosher to place it in a cabinet above the washer and dryer. I thought about placing is inside the bedrooms closet along the rear wall. (This would have it mounted directly behind the washer and dryer with venting to the rear. I'd hate to give up some storage space though. Plus, not sure if that would be a location that would be out of code compliance as well.

Oh well, off to the google...

Something like this, but without the sink is what I'm aiming for in the laundry/pantry. It looks possible. I need to consult with my plumber and city code.

No issues installing it in a closet in the laundry room. I would suspect there is some code that doesn't allow installation in a bedroom closet, and if there isn't, there should be. Don't want to have gas appliances that close to sleeping quarters.

Gotta love the 1960's.

My gas dryer is right next to the master bedroom. We have a CO detector next to our door.

Yeah. My sister's old place had the furnace closet in the bedroom.

Thanks y'all.

Does anyone have any advice for removing old window glazing? This is getting ridiculous.

Currently using a heat gun and chisel, and a metric ****-ton of effort. Been working the same sash for hours now.

Have you tried some kindling, lighter fluid, and a match?

That sounds miserable enough to say "F it".

I'm still trying to figure out what to do with the doorway. It needs an awning of some sort, possibly, and I need to figure out where the light is going to go.

My nemesis:
The heat gun is working better than the paint stripper. It ain't perfect, but I have to let go at some point. It's almost 130 years old, it's not going to be perfect.

Words of wisdom from a friend who bought a house in the Houston Heights and tried to do the same thing you're doing with your windows.....don't do it. Too much time re-pointing, too much time painting, too energy-inefficient. Just bite the bullet and buy new ones.
p_bubel
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Yeah, I'm not getting new windows. Replacement 6' wood windows are most definitely not in the budget. Thanks though.

I'm still trying to save up for the next big purchase, the install of the HVAC.

Looking great!

If I end up needing to depaint stuff like that in bulk again I think I'll try a palm sander and extremely coarse sandpaper while wearing a respirator. The flooring guys chewed through a half dozen layers of paint that way in no time at our place.

I've used stripper and heat and came to the same conclusion you did. Heat sucks, but it's the more effective if the two if they're what you have to choose from.
p_bubel
How long do you want to ignore this user?
It's been a sash-tastic couple of months since they last update.

Instead of the completing full frame and sash rebuilds I've focused on getting the broken ones redone as needed and moving onto the next set. Trying to heat the place up on cold days with missing glass is futile.
