How long do you want to ignore this user?
A. If Patty is still a major piece next year we have a problem
B. I don't think DD being 30 is especially relevant to anything
C. The spurs will miss the playoffs if none of the young guys step up, so in that sense the article has a point
D. We're always best when these articles are written. Bring it on

Our biggest problem last season was perimeter defense. Dejounte coming back and Derrick being healthy all season drastically improves that part of the team.

So I understand the sentiment - the west did get pretty good this offseason, but it got better last season too, and the Spurs still made it in with a complete lack of continuity and significant injuries, on top of the putrid perimeter defense.

Reading all these analysis is interesting. When you stack up all these teams based on named talent it looks like the Spurs have a very small chance to make the playoffs. But what the analyst dont predict very well is coaching and culture. I promise you no Spurs player can fathom missing the playoffs. This is one reason why Patty is still important despite so many on here saying hes trash.

A few other points come to mind about this team.

- think about the last two years, lost KL one year and DJ the next. Yet still found a way.
- Last year we caught a break with Labron going down. It seems probable that one of the top 8 favorites will have a key injury again.
- The Spurs should be SIGNIFICANTLY better on defense this year. Adding DJ, Carroll and possibly the rookie Johnson should make the perimeter defense more consistent. Last season they really struggled when White was out.
- the depth of this team should account for 5 wins. Seriously there are good young guys and a couple older guys who are going to struggle getting minutes. So on nights when some starters rest they should play big and fresh and win a few. Look at the favorites and not many of them are this deep.
- Speaking of the other teams. I'm not penciling in the Clips and Lakers just yet. PG is still hurt and KL only plays 60 games. The Lakers have zero depth. Utah, Houston, Portlan and Denver all look great on paper but let's see. I think OKC drops and I dont think SAC elevates enough.

I think the Blazers will be worse than they were last year. All of their wings left in free agency so they're going to rely heavily on Rodney Hood and the rookie Nassir Little to play a lot. Nurkic will also be out until at least the all star break.

This team was just really lacking in size and it showed against Rudy. Plus we lacked the firepower. If our All-Star/All-NBA players are not playing, the rest of the world is so improved that you would have to pick the field every time. Unfortunate that Pop is going to take the fall for this though.

Shams is reporting that DeRozan and the Spurs are in extension talks right now. I'm okay with this. It's not like we could attract anyone better through FA.

DJ hit some nice jumpers yesterday. According to Pop that's part of his game now. Forbes also had a monster game with 24 points. White really struggled coming off the bench. Usually team USA builds confidence for young players. I hope it didn't do the opposite for White because his shot really hasn't been falling since the Team USA season began.

But just 1st game of preseason so can't read too much into things. In contrast, the Lakers posted this via twitter:

Lakers should probably be the favorites. Luckily you still have to play the games.

If they stay perfectly healthy I think they will be a top 4 team in the west. Assuming they manage the minutes of their stars (which they should given their injury history) I have a hard time seeing how that team is going to generate offense (and play good defense for that matter) when they aren't on the floor. Pretty bold statement from a team who hasn't made the playoffs in years and with two star players, who IMO, have big question marks regarding their health.

Both Davis and James can carry a team by themselves. I think it's safe to assume they'll win plenty of games unless both guys get hurt. History has shown that teams with two stars like this typically win big. I wish it wasnt true.

I think it is going to be interesting. The thing is that it is getting to a point where there aren't going to be any easy games in the west. Everyone except the Thunder improved their team in some way. I guess you could argue that the Warriors didn't improve but they still have a very good team. The truth is that there are going to be some good teams that stay home when the playoffs start because there just aren't enough spots to go around.

LeBron, yes. Davis proved the opposite of that in NOLA with a better supporting cast (assuming Bron is out of course).
