The Lakers are probably planning to compete in 15/16 or 16/17 at the latest. Kobe is the only player still on the books at that point, and maybe they think he'll renegotiate for one last hurrah after another season of painful sucking. They'll throw a bunch of money around for the free agents that year and probably aren't done trying this year.
If Pau Gasol goes to SA or OKC, either will still be a major force in 2016 and probably in 2017 as well, plus that will make it easier to land Marc Gasol in 2015. That would be a major problem for the rest of the West for 3-4 years when you consider that the Spurs would probably be starting TP-Green-Leonard-Splitter-MGasol with Mills, Diaw, Anderson, PGasol, and Pop on the bench.
