I looked it up and Marion played over 30mpg last year. I realize Dallas didnt' really have the personelle to rest him, but that is crazy.

I still think he gets 20-25MPG because he would get a lot of PF minutes, too. And Kawhi seems to miss a few games every year. I think we need that insurance policy. I just don't want to sign someone like him longer than 2 years.

I find it hard to believe any team would give him a contract for more than 2 years. That body has a lotta miles on it.

I don't think giving him 2 years at MLE money is a bad deal.

Well the spurs don't really have one off season they are shooting for here to save up money. It was supposed to be this off season but we are all pleasantly surprised that it isn't.

Yeah his MPG would be higher because of all the blowouts/resting the spurs have during the regular season but there won't be many minutes available in big games being behind Kawhi.

It's more likely the spurs sign some sort of vet to man that backup sf spot, someone who doesn't mind racking up some DNP CDs every once in awhile. Or just keep Daye I guess.

Besides, if Tim and Manu retire after this year, the Spurs aren't landing any big name free agents next summer, so cap space isn't exactly the highest of priorities for next year.

If they do come back, it'd be nice to have someone like Marion around again. And then still have your MLE the next year to add another vet who wants a ring.

Bazemore already signed elsewhere and a 2 guard is the deepest spot on the roster already with Green, Manu and Belinelli.

Marion takes way too many bad shots. I just don't know if you can reel him in to just taking corner threes, lay ups and defending. Especially in just one year. Get a younger, athletic player and mold him to what he needs to be. Wes Johnson or Aminu both could be Leonard light.

I would obviously take Marion if he'd be willing to come though. I also think someone like Francisco Garcia would be a good pickup for the BAE and allow the spurs to sit on the MLE this year.

I know Bazemore signed elsewhere.... I still liked the idea of getting a combo guard who could defend and handle the ball some. Manu will likely miss ~30% of the season and Party is out until Jan-March. Danny can't handle the ball. We're all in with Joseph being able to provide us with great minutes here. I don't necessarily have a problem with that but that's what it is. Lets hope Patty doesn't take too long to shake off the rust when he can see the court.

Aminu is more of a 4 than anything. Incredibly inefficient offensively and can't shoot. If the spurs feel like they might be able to get him to shoot the ball well they might look at him but it's doubtful. He doesn't work well here.

I actually think Marion would work really well in a spurs uniform. Just not sure he's willing to take a diminished role because the spurs won't promise him anything.

Wes Johnson isn't a bad idea for the BAE. he showed some flashes last year.

Aminu surprised a lot of people with how well he shot the three as a rookie. I don't know if that was his ceiling as a shooter or if he just lost interest in getting better in New Orleans. I'm not sure he's considered a particularly smart or driven player either. He is a 6'8 athlete with a 7'4 wingspan who can rebound and defend though.

I don't think McRoberts has signed yet. With Lebron gone he may still be looking around.

If Marion will come to San Antonio and is willing to be the backup for a year or two, you do that, especially if McRoberts is definitely out and Bonner/Baynes are coming back. Leonard/Diaw/Marion gives you a lot of lineup options. Leonard and Marion can defend 1 through (small) 4, Diaw can defend (big) 3 through 5, and they can all do pretty much everything on offense.

McBob announced today that he isn't going back on his committment to Miami and will sign there.
Ulrich

The Bonner signing led me to believe that, but I couldn't find anything definitive.

If Aminu could learn to shoot, he'd be a real nice backup for Kawhi. He's a very capable defender with a lot of length. However, as if been mentioned, he's not real smart and isn't a very competent offensive player.

Marion would be a pretty nice fit for 15-20 mpg. Good and versatile defender, good rebounder, smart player that could pick up our system. However, his jumper isn't exactly reliable.

I don't know a ton about Wes Johnson. He seems like he's the best shooter of the bunch, but he's not lights out either. I also have no clue what kind of defender he is.

Gasol is only making $7.3MM per year in Chicago. I thought he'd be making more. Not that much better than the MLE. But oh well.

NBA contracts make no sense.

Illinois also has income tax apparently. I'm not sure how much, but that's probably almost equal to MLE in Texas. Stupid Spaniards.
Knife_Party
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Yep...Chicago cost of living plus state, county, and city taxes and he's probably sitting right at the MLE if not a little bit lower.

And get run down by this in the regular season.

Unforunately that seems to be a common thread among players. They want money over winning and have a me first attitude about starting, never mind if it means they play on a losing team or it shortens their career by 4-5 years. Oh well. I guess that's why there's only one San Antonio Spurs.

It was going to be a tough sell because we really were primarily offering backup minutes behind Tim. You don't want to play Tim and Pau at the same time too much because we'd be extremely vulnerable to PNR. Gasol would have been a great fit for the MLE , but I don't think he was ready to assume that much of a lesser role.

If Duncan/Splitter/Diaw average 27/25/25 minutes, we only have 19 mpg to fill at post. Baynes with 8-12 and we are at ~10. If we got someone worth playing, we could give Diaw 8-10 minutes at SF to spell Kawhi.

The State Tax thing is always overstated because it really only affects half the contract, the other half are road games and you have to pay the tax of the place you are playing. It matters but for a deal like Pau's it is likely only a few hundred K difference at most when all is said and done. It's also not like Chicago is terrible with no chance of winning either, they just aren't nearly the Title contenders the Spurs are.

Would have loved to have gotten Pau but it really isn't a big deal and actually may set the Spurs up better for their rebuild in the Post Duncan era.

Sometimes it feels like the Spurs are playing Moneyball while the rest of the league is still going after players the same old way.
Sher Thing

If Rose regains form (seems like a long shot at this point but assuming he can) they have as good a shot as anyone to come out of the east. I don't blame him for going to Chicago and I'm actually kind of glad he did. I hope Chicago can become a legitimate contender because this Lebron cake-walking to the finals thing is getting really old.

I read an article saying the spurs are using the summer league to determine if Anderson can guard wings. If he can, then he's your backup SF. He can also handle as a true PG so that helps with patty out and Manu hobbled. I'm starting to think the mle is not going to anyone and the spurs will instead give all these backup minutes to young guys.
Sher Thing
How long do you want to ignore this user?
It's possible although Anderson has looked pretty shaky out there defending thus far. Still early though.

Saw where the Pelicans are waiving F Omri Casspi. Not sure if he'll clear waivers but it wouldn't surprise me to see the Spurs make a run at him if he does. They have been linked to him before.

So he will be amazing once the season rolls around? Typical spurs sandbagging to pretend to suck, then flourish when it counts. Like the spurs going 0-4 against Houston and Oklahoma city.

I don't put any stock into what's going on in summer league, it's just an observation on a guy who is on the fringe of the active 13.

It would be nice to see him show up and just dominate at summer league shooting the ball. But I guess it wouldn't necessarily mean anything either.

Let's face it, July - September is just a painful time of year for basketball fans.

Daye did some good things tonight. 18 pts 11rebs 5asts. Darius Morris with 19 pts. J'mychal Green continues to impress. 14 pts 9rebs for him. Same from Anderson 9pts 3rebs 3asts. Looks comfortable offensively and with the ball in his hands but struggles mightily on the defensive side of the ball.
