That was a proper test for Slot ball and it passed with flying colors. We invited Chelsea's press all game long to create space. Early in the match the wings were too high and we struggled to find them. Once we compacted a bit, it opened up space behind Chelsea's press. The entire midfield had great energy and they routinely exploited those areas once the wings got clean possession. Cujo was magnificent, but it truly was a great team win. Great effort and positional discipline from all involved.
That said, it's games like this that make me want to lock up VVD forever. When you look at why Chelsea really lost, it's because their CBs were too sloppy in possession and unorganized. Virgil has lost a step, a younger version would have caught Jackson, but his calm presence will always be a winning intangible.
