As the calendar approaches the end of February, it is time for the annual relegation watch, as the bottom half of the league begins to focus less on gaining spots in European Football and more on preservation from relegation.

This year's relegation watch might be a bit anti-climatic, as we seem to have three clubs who have already dropped off the pace and are in trouble of falling behind. The good news for relegation lovers is that all three of these teams are very close to one another, meaning all three still have a chance to avoid relegation, and there are some big clubs lurking just above the relegation zone, which could make the battle very interesting.

Current Relegation Standings:
Team GP Points
14. Brentford 26 24
15. Leeds 25 23
16. Everton 23 22
17. Newcastle 24 22
18. Burnley 23 20
19. Watford 25 18
20. Norwich 25 17

Brentford- Of the clubs not currently in the bottom 3, Brentford have to be the most concerning, as the Bees are currently leaking oil and dropping fast. The club has lost 6 of its last 7 matches, with one draw, its last victory being on January 2 over Aston Villa. The next 3 matches will be key for Brentford, as they play 3 in a row against fellow relegation dwellers (Newcastle, Norwich and Burnley). Win 2 of those 3 matches and the club will be at 30 points with 9 matches remaining, and should be relatively safe. Lose these three games and the Bees are in the middle of the relegation hunt. Brentford is a great story and with this being their first ever season in the Premier League I am sure most neutrals would hate to see them go straight back down.

Leeds United- Leeds made a triumphant return to the EPL last season after a long absence, becoming the darling team of last year's league. This season has been much more of a grind for Leeds, as they have had to deal with key injuries and a seeming loss of desire to play the Bielsa way by the club. Leeds have only won 2 of their last 10, for a total of 8 points over that stretch, and now find themselves in the midst of a relegation battle. Things don't get easier for the Whites, as their remaining schedule is one of the toughest of the relegation fighters. So Leeds could be around the relegation battle for the remainder of the season. Leeds current form has to raise some serious concerns for supporters of the Whites.

Everton- Yes, somehow the Toffees are down right in the middle of the relegation battle, thanks in large part to a Rafa Benitez led disaster the first half of the season. It will be interesting to see Frank Lampard navigate the Toffees through relegation waters, and I have my concerns about the roster and its ability to come together cohesively. Everton's next three matches are Man City, Tottenham and Wolves, so, good luck Frank! If the Toffees do stick around the bottom 3 it will be fascinating to watch how the club and their supporters deal with a relegation battle, as things could get ugly on the Blue side of the Merseyside.

Newcastle United- The new owners of Newcastle have put forth the best efforts money could buy in an attempt to keep their new toy up in the EPL. Hiring Eddie Howe might be the smartest move they have made, as Howe has his club believing right now, having not lost since mid-December, going 3-0-3 over their last 6. With their current form, the Toons may run away from the relegation battle in short order.

Burnley- For most of the season Burnley has been sitting at the very bottom of the table, unable to win a game, but finding a way to stay somewhat in the battle through ties. All the sudden the Clarets have found their winning ways, claiming 2 victories in a row over Brighton and Tottenham and only losing once in their last 6. You knew a Sam Dyche led club would not go down without a fight. The small club has continued to fight their way to safety over the last 5-6 seasons, and you would be foolish to think they won't battle for a spot in the EPL for next season.

Watford- After being promoted back to the EPL this season, Watford have really struggled to find their hold in the EPL, never really having any kind of run in form. Their 17 losses are a league high, and they have conceded second most goals this season. During their remaining 13 matches Watford still must play most the top clubs (Man United, Liverpool, City, Wolves, and Chelsea) but also have some remaining six-pointers against Burnley, Brentford and Leeds. I don't see Watford staying up this year, but they are close enough to safety to keep it interesting.

Norwich- And then there was Norwich, our perpetual yo-yo club that makes one year stays in the EPL and Championship a habit. Between them and Fulham you always have one EPL team. The Canaries' prospects had been looking up as they won two matches in a row over Everton and Watford, and followed that up with a draw against Palace. But their last two matches have been thrashings to Man City and Liverpool, which have put the club back at the bottom of the table. The next three matches are Southampton, Brentford and Leeds, so this spell should tell us if Norwich is up for the fight or if we can count on them being a Championship contender again next season.

This Weekend's Key Relegation Matches:

Friday
Southampton v. Norwich (2pm, St. Mary's Stadium, USA Network)- Norwich will be aiming to complete a Premier League double over Southampton for the first time as the Canaries claimed a 2-0 win over the Saints in November at Carrow Road. Meanwhile the Saints will try to extend their unbeaten home run to 10 matches (W4 D5), their longest streak for 17 years. Norwich may not prove to be much of an obstacle to reaching that record, as they have gone 2W, 2T and 8L this season away from home, for just 8 points on the road.

Saturday
Leeds v. Tottenham Hotspur (6:30am, Elland Road, USA Network). Spurs will be looking to complete the league double over Leeds and make up for their last trip to Yorkshire in mid week, when Tottenham were beaten 1-0 by Burnley. It will be the third trip to the region for Spurs in a week, after their shocking victory over Man City last weekend. Leeds meanwhile need to right the ship, and fast, as the club has lost 4 of their last 5 and are giving up goals at an incredible rate, conceding 16 goals in their last 4 EPL matches (that's 4 a game for the math challenged). Spurs claimed a 2-1 victory over the Whites in London back in November, and Leeds will need to get some of their players back soon or it could be a difficult run in for the Yorkshire club.

Brentford v. Newcastle (9am, Brentford Community Stad., Peacock). For the relegation battle this is the match of the weekend, as both the Bees and the Toons will look to put distance between themselves and the bottom 3. The clubs drew in a 3-3 thriller back in November at St. James Park, so we can only hope this match will be as exciting. Newcastle come in to the match in strong form, having won 3 of their last 4 and going unbeaten in their last 5, only conceding 3 goals over that stretch. The Bees meanwhile have only claimed one point in their last 5, going 0-4-1 while only scoring 3 goals over those 5 games.

Crystal Palace v. Burnley (9am, Selhurst Park, Peacock). The Clarets will travel to London to take on the Eagles and seek to continue their current run of form, having won their last two matches. The clubs tied 3-3 at Turf Moor in November, so hopefully we will get more of that. Crystal Palace won their last match over Watford, but have not had a good run of form as of late, only claiming that one win since the New Year.

Manchester United v. Watford (9am, Old Trafford, USA Network). Watford will look for a league double over United, seeking to repeat their shocking 4-1 defeat of United back in November at Vicarage Road, a loss that brought an end to the Solksjaer era at United. Watford have not done much since that victory, only claiming one win since then. United meanwhile come into this match having not lost in their last 7 EPL matches. Watford will come in looking for a point and hopes of continuing to claw their way closer to safety.

Everton v. Manchester City (11:30am, Goodison Park, Peacock). Everton are hoping to get out of the relegation battle, but this weekend might prove difficult, as they welcome the league title holders to Goodison. Man City beat the Blues 3-0 in November at the Etihad and have a long history of dismantling Everton clubs. City will also be looking to right the ship in their EPL title hopes following a shock defeat to Tottenham last weekend. Other than a 3-0 win over Leeds, Everton have been abysmal in 2022, going 1-5-0 for 3 points since the start of the year.

Enjoy the weekend!

On the promotion side, Fulham and Bournemouth are in great shape for the top 2 spots and a good tight race for the next 4 between QPR, Huddersfield, Boro, Sheffield and Blackburn. Some good names I'd like to see make it.

QPR is who I'd like to see up the most out of the contenders. Kind of like Brentford it would be nice to see a new face in London.

Leeds have been outscored 17-2 in the last 4 games…

I can't see Bielsa there much longer….he might be gone before he walks into the locker room

Weekend's Results:

Southampton 2-0 Norwich. Goals from Che Adams and Oriol Romeu earned Southampton a 2-0 win over Norwich City. Adams opened the scoring nine minutes before half-time with his third goal in four matches.
Mohamed Elyounoussi, Kyle Walker-Peters and Stuart Armstrong all had chances to double the lead but were denied by former Southampton goalkeeper Angus Gunn. Norwich then had a big chance to equalise when Grant Hanley missed the target with a header. Romeu sealed the win in the 88th minute with a great strike from the edge of the area. Norwich remain bottom with 17 points, five from safety. They have also played more matches and have an inferior goal difference than all five teams directly above them.

Leeds 0-4 Tottenham Hotspur. Tottenham scored three times in the opening half-hour as they won 4-0 at Leeds United. Spurs went ahead in the 10th minute as Ryan Sessegnon crossed to Matt Doherty, who scored his first goal for the club. Five minutes later, Dejan Kulusevski finished at the near post for his second goal in three matches. Leeds nearly answered when Robin Koch hit the post, but instead Spurs lead increased to 3-0 in the 27th minute as Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg chipped the ball over the top and Harry Kane volleyed into the far corner.
Spurs added a final goal in the 85th minute as Kane sent a beautiful long-range ball over the top to Son Heung-min, whose shot left no doubt. Leeds drop to 16th after their fourth straight defeat, two points above the relegation zone, and ushered out Bielsa as their manager after the match.

Brentford 0-2 Newcastle. Christian Eriksen made his debut for Brentford but was unable to save his side from defeat as Newcastle United won 2-0 to leapfrog the Bees in the relegation battle. Brentford were reduced to 10 men in just the 11th minute after a VAR review led to Josh Dasilva being awarded a red card for a foul on Matt Targett. Newcastle took advantage in the 33rd minute, when Joelinton headed in Ryan Fraser's cross. Eddie Howe's team struck again at the end of the half when Joe Willock, scored his second goal in two matches.
Eriksen came off the bench in the 52nd minute for his first appearance since suffering a cardiac arrest at Euro 2020 last summer, but was unable to engineer a comeback. Newcastle, who are unbeaten in seven matches, climb to 14th on 25 points, a place and a point ahead of Brentford, and four points off the relegation zone.

Crystal Palace 1-1 Burnley. Burnley came from behind to draw 1-1 at Crystal Palace and go three matches unbeaten to boost their hopes of avoiding relegation. Palace led after only nine minutes as Michael Olise's cross from was knocked in by Jeffrey Schlupp. Burnley equaled early in the second half when Aaron Lennon's cross was steered in by Luka Milivojevic for an own goal. Wout Weghorst nearly claimed all three points for Burnley, but his header was brilliantly tipped over by Jack Butland. Palace had their chances too, as Wilfried Zaha twice went close, forcing a save from Pope and then hitting a post within a matter of seconds. Burnley are 18th with 21 points, a point behind Everton.

Manchester United 0-0 Watford. Watford earned a first-ever Premier League point at Old Trafford with a goalless draw, severely hurting Manchester United's hopes of a top-four finish in the process. United had 67 percent possession and 22 shots but could not find a way past a Watford. Cristiano Ronaldo hit a post five minutes in before Bruno Fernandes had two chances, being denied by a superb Ben Foster save before heading over Ronaldo's cross. Anthony Elanga shot wide after brilliant build-up play including a Paul Pogba flick, while Ronaldo had a shot blocked. Ismaila Sarr had the best chance for Watford, but he fired just over as Watford nearly snatched a winner. Watford remain 19th on 19 points, three from safety, but have played more matches than both Burnley and Everton directly above them.

Everton 0-1 Manchester City. Phil Foden earned Manchester City a late 1-0 win at Goodison Park just when it looked like Everton would give Merseyside rivals Liverpool a hand in the title race. Everton had frustrated the leaders for 82 minutes with a brilliant defensive performance led by Jordan Pickford. The Everton goalkeeper denied Foden and Joao Cancelo before a fantastic double save from Kevin De Bruyne's low shot and Bernardo Silva's follow-up. But with the match heading towards a stalemate, Foden took advantage of Michael Keane's slip to score from close range. A fifth defeat in seven leaves Everton a point and a place above the relegation zone.

Everton relegation would be wild. They've been in the 1st division since 1954. One of six teams to never be relegated from the Premier League.

Well them and Burnley have several games in hand so they shouldnt be too worried.. yet!

There is one midweek EPL game this week, and it is a big one in the relegation battle.

Tuesday

Burnley v. Leicester City (1:45pm, Turf Moor; Peacock)- Burnley will look to pull themselves out of the Bottom 3 when they host the Foxes this evening. The Clarets come in to the match in good form, as they have taken seven points from their last three Premier League matches (W2 D1), as many as they had from their previous 11 matches combined (W0 D7 L4). If the Clarets avoid defeat here then Everton will finish a day in the relegation zone this late into a campaign for the first time since 1998-99. Having defeated Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 at Turf Moor last time out, Burnley are looking to secure consecutive home league wins for the first time since December 2020. Leicester have a higher Premier League win rate in March than they do in any other month of the year, winning 21 of their 50 such matches (42 per cent). The Foxes have lost only one of their last 17 in March (W13 D3), a 2-1 defeat at Watford in 2019. With a loss today, Leicester would be just 5 points clear of the relegation zone. The two sides drew 2-2 in September at King Power.

With a contract till June 2025, it'd be painful for them to fire him if they get relegated this year.

I hope he turns them around, but there would be worse fates than dropping to the Championship, assuming he stays in management's good graces despite a drop. It might even be beneficial in many regards to have a reset year at a lower level and then come back to EPL with his system in place.

His biggest problem at Leipzig was trying to change too much too soon. His philosophy fit Salzburg (and the Rangnick/Hassenhuttl Leipzig) but Leipzig had changed quite a bit under Nagelsmann and it was a tall order to go back to the old style so quickly.

The problem at Leipzig was the owner/management thought they wanted the high press system, then realized that they wanted to win now more than they wanted to build for the future. Marsch wasn't really given a chance.

Burnley 0-2 Leicester City. Substitutes James Maddison and Jamie Vardy earned Leicester City a late 2-0 win and prevented Burnley from moving out of the relegation zone. Leicester dominated the majority of the match but were denied by an inspired Nick Pope, who made brilliant saves on Ricardo Pereira, Patson Daka and Harvey Barnes, twice. Maddison and Vardy came on in the 72nd minute and changed the match. Vardy, making his first appearance of 2022 after recovering from injury, teed up Maddison to break the deadlock with a shot from outside the box. Vardy then headed in Barnes's cross in the final minute to seal the victory. A draw would have lifted Burnley above Everton, but they remain in 18th, a point from safety.

I'd be interested in thoughts on the next "Top 10ish" club to go down. In the last 20 years we've seen Villa, Leeds, Newcastle and City get relegated. Chelsea in the last 40. With rhe money and advantages that the top clubs have now will they ever be relegated? Would any of the Big 6 get relegated in the next 30 years?

IIRC, Liverpool was on the bubble when FSG bought them. F Tom Hicks for what it's worth.

The world always changes. Valencia went big on real estate development around their stadium in the early 2000s right before the Great Recession. They've not recovered and I believe even went down. They've been purchased since but people with money can't predict everything.

My guess would be Norwich, Watford, Burnley, but we will see soon enough with Leeds.

There are a lot of big "six pointers" still to be played, the results of those matches will ultimately determine the relegation battle:

Remaining six pointers

Newcastle: @Everton, @Norwich, @Burnley

Brentford: @Norwich, Burnley, @Watford, @Everton, Leeds

Leeds: Norwich, @Watford, @Brentford

Everton: @Burnley, Newcastle, @Watford, Brentford

Burnley: Everton, @Brentford, @Norwich, @Watford, Newcastle

Watford: Everton, Leeds, Brentford, Burnley

Norwich: Brentford, @Leeds, Burnley, Newcastle

15. Brentford 27 24
16. Leeds 26 23
17. Everton 24 22
18. Burnley 25 21
19. Watford 26 19
20. Norwich 26 17

Relegation Matches this Weekend:

Saturday
Leicester v. Leeds (6:30am, King Power Stadium, USA Network). Let the Jesse Marsch era at Leeds begin!
Leeds are unbeaten in their last five league matches at Leicester (W2 D3). Six of the last seven Leeds managers have lost their first in the Premier League match. The exception was Terry Venables, who oversaw a 3-0 win over Manchester City in August 2002. Marsch becomes the third American to manage in the Premier League, after Bob Bradley (11 matches with Swansea in 2016) and David Wagner (60 with Huddersfield, 2017-19). The two clubs dew 1-1 at Elland Road back in November. Giving up 1 goal would be a wonderful day for Leeds, as they have allowed 20 goals in their last 5 EPL matches, for a 4 goal per game average.

Burnley v. Chelsea (9:00am, Turf Moor, USA Network). Burnley will be looking to right the ship after a tough mid-week defeat, when they host the Blues. It won't come easy, as Chelsea have won six of their seven Premier League matches at Burnley, drawing the other. Only against Wimbledon (eight) have the Blues played more away matches in the competition without losing. Following their 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge in the reverse fixture, Burnley are looking to avoid defeat in both league meetings with Chelsea in a single campaign for the first time since 1970-71.

Newcastle v. Brighton (9am, St. James' Park, Peacock). Newcastle look to move out of the relegation battle as they welcome the Seagulls to the Northeast on Saturday. Brighton have had Newcastle's number, however, as Newcastle have never won in nine previous Premier League meetings with Brighton (D5 L4). That is more often than they have faced any other side without a victory in the competition. Brighton are unbeaten in their four Premier League matches at Newcastle (W2 D2), keeping a clean sheet each time. It is the most a team has faced another away from home in the competition without ever conceding.

Norwich v. Brentford (9am, Carrow Road, Peacock). This game, more than any other on the weekend slate, will have a say in the course of the Relegation Battle. Will Brentford be drug down into the mire of the battle? Will Norwich show some fight in trying to avoid relegation? 3 points are vital for both of these clubs on Saturday.
Norwich City earned their first Premier League win of the season in the reverse fixture against Brentford in November. They can complete a first league double over the Bees since 1959-60. Since beating Aston Villa 2-1 in January, Brentford have picked up just one point from their last 8 EPL matches (W0 D1 L7). The Bees' run of eight matches without victory is the longest current winless run in the EPL. Should be a great game to watch, as we hopefully will get a Christian Eriksen and Josh Sargent appearance.

Sunday
Watford v. Arsenal (8am, Vicarage Road, USA Network). Watford welcome the Gunners to Vicarage Road for a North London Derby on Sunday, seeking 3 points and to keep themselves relevant in the relegation battle. Watford have kept three clean sheets in their six Premier League matches under Roy Hodgson, as many as in their previous 38 in the competition under four different managers. However, they have only scored twice in those six outings. Arsenal have scored in all 15 of their Premier League matches v Watford. Only against West Brom, with 26 matches, do they have a better 100 per cent scoring rate in the competition. Arsenal claimed a 1-0 win over the Hornets in November when the clubs met at the Emirates.

Monday
Tottenham v. Everton (2pm, Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, USA Network). Everton seem destined to stay in the relegation battle for the season, as they travel to London to battle a Spurs squad looking to get into the top 4. Spurs have lost just one of their last 18 Premier League matches v Everton (W8 D9), although that did come in this fixture last season. After their victory in this fixture last term, Everton are looking to pick up their first back-to-back league wins at Spurs since a run of three between August 2006 and November 2008. The two clubs slogged out a 0-0 draw in November at Goodison Park.

Enjoy the Weekend!

Watching that game, it looked like Marsch's style was going to fit very well with the Leed's personnel. They were operating as essentially a 4-2-4 most the game. Were very unlucky not to come out of that match with at least one point, if not the full 3.

Everton made the wrong choice in Lampard. If you are locked in a relegation a battle the right move is to break the glass and pull the Big Sam lever. It won't be pretty but it's the smart move.

Weekend Results:

Leicester 1-0 Leeds. Harvey Barnes scored in a fourth successive match against Leeds United as Leicester handed a 1-0 defeat to Jesse Marsch on his debut in charge of the Whites. Leeds enjoyed the better of the first half, with Daniel James and Jack Harrison both denied by Kasper Schmeichel, who again made a superb stop to keep out Raphinha at point-blank range at the 60 minute mark. Then Leicester went ahead against the run of play on 67 minutes when Barnes fired a shot low into the far corner. Leeds were unable to respond and are 16th on 23 points, two points above the relegation zone.

Burnley 0-4 Chelsea. Chelsea scored four unanswered goals in the second half to earn a comfortable win over Burnley at Turf Moor. Burnley had the best first-half chances, with Thiago Silva forced to clear a shot from Wout Weghorst off the line. But Reece James put Chelsea in front two minutes after the break and the Blues never looked back, as they scored twice in quick succession through Kai Havertz, who headed in a Christian Pulisic cross, before converting a centre from James. Pulisic scored Chelsea's fourth on 69 minutes after defender James Tarkowski had diverted the ball into his path. Burnley remain 18th on 21 points, one off safety.

Newcastle 2-1 Brighton. Two early goals from Ryan Fraser and Fabian Schar earned Newcastle United a fifth win in six matches as they beat Brighton & Hove Albion 2-1 at St James' Park. Fraser put the Toons ahead on 12 minutes when he reacted quickest after Jacob Murphy's shot came back off the post. Schar doubled Newcastle's lead two minutes later by powerfully heading in Fraser's cross. Brighton had started well and were initially frustrated in their attempts to get back into the match as Martin Dubravka saved Danny Welbeck's header.
Lewis Dunk headed in a Pascal Gross corner on 55 minutes as the visitors threatened a second-half comeback.
But they were denied by Dubravka, who kept out another Dunk effort and an attempt from Leandro Trossard.
Newcastle's eight-match unbeaten run keeps them 14th with 28 points.

Norwich 1-3 Brentford. Ivan Toney claimed his first Premier League hat-trick and helped earn Brentford a vital victory as they beat relegation rivals Norwich City 3-1 at Carrow Road. Milot Rashica, Teemu Pukki and Joshua Sargent all had early chances in a bright start for Norwich, but instead Brentford went in front on 32 minutes.
Toney volleyed in at the far post post after Kristoffer Ajer had flicked on a corner from Christian Eriksen, who made his first start for Brentford. Toney doubled the Bees' advantage seven minutes into the second half from the penalty spot, after Ben Gibson had fouled Pontus Jansson. The Brentford striker completed the hat trick with a second penalty six minutes later after he had been brought down by Gibson. Pukki scored a late consolation for Norwich, who were unable to prevent Brentford claiming a first win in nine league matches, leaving the Bees 15th on 27 points, six clear of the bottom three. Norwich are 10 points back in 20th place, five points from safety.

Sunday
Watford 2-3 Arsenal. Arsenal raced ahead and then held on to beat Watford 3-2 at Vicarage Road. Watford's Emmanuel Dennis had a goal ruled out for offside after only 16 seconds before the Gunners took a fifth-minute lead through Martin Odegaard. But Watford responded quickly as Cucho Hernandez met a Kiko Femenia cross with a fine overhead kick in the 11th minute. Saka then got on the scoresheet on the half-hour, firing a shot into the roof of the net. Gabriel Martinelli made the score 3-1 in the 52nd minute. Moussa Sissoko scored for Watford three minutes from time to set up a nervy finish, but Arsenal were able to see out a fourth straight victory. Watford remain 19th, three points from safety.

Monday
Tottenham 5-0 Everton. Harry Kane scored twice as Tottenham Hotspur destroyed struggling Everton 5-0. Spurs took the lead after 14 minutes when Ryan Sessegnon's low cross was turned in to his own net by Michael Keane.
Son Heung-min made it 2-0 less than three minutes later, firing past Jordan Pickford. Kane ran clean through on goal to score on 37 minutes, and half-time substitute Sergio Reguilon swept home Spurs' fourth less than a minute after his introduction. Kane made it 5-0 in the 55th minute with a brilliant angled volley. A third straight defeat means Everton stay 17th on 22 points, one point above the relegation zone.
