If we have so much money to throw around hiring Michael Young, why don't we steal a provost or chancellor from the UC system? They clearly know what they're doing and we clearly don't.

These TAMU system junior colleges that are popping up everywhere are tarnishing the TAMU brand, which wasn't strong to begin with compared with the UC's, UVA's, UNC's and Michigan's of the world

One last comparison - A&M used to be the top public school in the SEC second only to Vandy.

Now?

14) Florida
20) Georgia
25) Texas A&M
38) Alabama (catching up)

A&M also used to be the 2nd/3rd best university in Texas. Now it's 5th/6th. But hey, we have the biggest stadium in Texas!!!

You don't know me well enough to use silly insults. Please stop.

I've not run a university. Have you? If not, our opinions (including yours to simply trust our Regents and Chancellor) have equal weight and validity.

To the point of the growth being discussed today contrasted to the growth in Rudder's time. Women were not admitted for the direct purpose of increasing enrollment, neither was the Corps made non-compulsory for the specific reason of enrollment growth. The reasons were to provide the state of Texas with a more opportunities for education. That is most decidedly NOT the point of the growth being discussed now. If it were, the growth of the System would be the topic, not the increasing the enrollment at TAMU-CS. Also the growth back in Rudder's time was not an attempt to grow into something that no other university in the county has aspired.

Please respond to the posts of Richardson Zone regarding the standing of the UC System vs ours.

Stop using Useless News and World Distort rankings. Those are worse than Ketch's rankings. High school guidance counselors shouldn't determine college rankings, employers should.

It must be amazing that Texas has had a good economy for decades now in spite of producing a bunch of college idiots. And it's just bad luck that Michigan and California aren't doing as well economically when they have far superior people due to their best in the world universities. I mean it's not like California has any geographical advantages over texas. Lol.

I want A&M to maintain standards as well. Where we disagree is that you want to use the worst ranking system in the world because it's popular. I've never concerned myself with popularity, only being right.

Many times perception is reality. The USA rankings aren't everything. They also are not nothing.

Especially so with universities. Their value is built on reputation. If they ignore USN&WR rankings, they do so at their peril.

California is a great example of what happens when you have a crowded space with bad leadership. (Sound familiar?)

Michigan the prime example that manufacturing based economies are not sustainable in modern first world countries with modern, first world regulatory schemes- whether you're talking about environmental, labor, or whatever...

That the founder of Google graduated from Michigan and Stanford isn't what is hurting those economies.

Its not really Berkeley's fault. Its not Stanford's fault, either. Or whatever great California school's fault. That they pump out Nobel Laureates on the regular isn't hurting California.

I've never gone to school in Silicon Valley, but the amount of student-driven innovation out there isn't hard to understand. Its incredible, and Stanford and Berkeley graduates are dramatically changing the way the world works.

I want A&M to have the kind of atmosphere conducive to that level of innovation, ambition, creativeness, etc..., etc...

So California produces geniuses who are bad leaders and dumb voters and Michigan produces geniuses who can't figure out the economy changed from the 1800s. Or maybe they aren't the geniuses that you think they are. And Stanford is not a public school.

Their political ideology does not change the fact that UC Berkeley and Michigan are outperforming TAMU academically. It doesn't take a genius to realize that student to teacher ratio is important. Increasing to 80K will make every classroom an auditorium of students with one prof. The ASU similarity has already been discussed. Also, as Cecil pointed out, perception is reality. Yes, the rankings may not have the best formula but they are what everyone looks at.

I think some of the assumptions being made are wrong about admissions... my daughter is a sophomore. She had to go into holistic review as she wasn't top ten percent. Despite a 99 avg and 1300 on SAT it was not a sure thing. The students getting in who are not qualified are the top ten percent folks from schools where even a "b" average is top ten percent and despite an 800 for example on the SAT they must be admitted. There are gobs of kids with mid "a" averages and better than a 1200 on SAT getting turned down by TAMU. However, don't really know how it works on transfers. The problem with growing the population so fast is keeping up with quality teachers, classroom and lab space etc and a host of other things. If you don't see significant tuition increases then I don't see how quality doesn't fall as they are already underfunded significantly compared to any peer.
My son had a 3.8/4.0 at lake Travis + 1280 SAT and did not get in for next fall. He was accepted everywhere else ( did not apply to UT). He's enrolled at Blinn for the fall and will transfer in to Econ ( since it's very hard to transfer into Mays). I guarantee you he's more prepared than most top 10% ears from po-dunk HS! Gods got a plan, just gotta go with it!

We should buy blinn and rename it as the freshman campus. Move the freshman student activities over there. Hire a bunch of adjunct professors to get the ratios way down. Make the classes really hard, let the cream rise to the top and admit them to the main campus their sophomore year then give the rest auto admission to one of the other campuses. Structure the curriculum so that students wanting to major in specific course work compete with each other. For instance a kid wanting to be a nuclear Engineer doesn't compete with a whimsical general studies major.

When schools like Clemson and Purdue are ranked ahead of A&M, you know we've got bad leadership.

We should aim to be ahead of Florida. It's unacceptable that we are behind them. That school is way overrated. I grew up in florida and live there now.

I am not smart enough to know if increasing enrollment to 80k is a good or bad thing. But I can tell you that many non top 8% HS students I know did not get int UT but was accepted at A&M

How can you be THE top school and Second to another? You can't even discern the difference between the numbers 1 and ****ing 2. Withdrawing your contributions would not make this problem go away. If fact, if people did this it would probably only exacerbate it.

If you want to voice your displeasure, there are numerous outlets to do so. Find your local A&M alumni chapter and talk with the president of the club. Email Sharp himself. Rally a cause on social media. But arbitrarily canceling your donations will do nothing good to alter this specific issue.

Canceling the donation with a notice as to why you're doing it would send a pretty clear message that just *****ing Sharp out via email would not.

The rumor at the time was that we had one lined up to replace Gates, but the regents blocked the hire.

Ten years from now, if we remain on Sharp's road to disaster, there will be many "reasonable" Ags (ie, don't rock the boat, get in line, do as you're told conformists) wondering what the hell happened.

Well. Forgetting for a moment that the 80k figure referenced in the thread title is about as true as the ruse that Sarah Palin once said 'I can see Russia from my house!'...it was an SNL joke that many people still think is true b/c it has been repeated within the same prevaricative form and context keeping the 80k figure alive in this conversation...(btw, Joseph Goebbles says 'hi' to you and all the other sanctimonious dopes)

Sounds like you've got a lot of experience running a major university...either that or you've got a crystal ball...pray tell oh wise one: which is it? If neither, then pls kindly curl your hand into a fist and sit on it.

Sid the discussion has long since moved past that 80K figure. The figures that have been thrown around are big enough that the discussion doesn't change.

Some honest questions:

1) What is your experience running a major university?

2) Do you (or have you) ever had strong opinion on any subject for which you are not an experienced expert?

3) Assuming that the answer to question 1 is "no", other than blind faith, what parameters do you use to evaluate the leadership of Texas A&M?
