Big picture, they made the right call and did it in a manner that allowed people plenty of time to plan. I do not see the point of kicking anyone in the balls over it, unless you just like to bich for biching sake
What's ironic is that years, decades, ago, they'd make the call no earlier than 6am the morning of. That was with less communication ability than currently. Now, with email, text, and mass media, they call it days ahead of time.
I still think they called it way too soon. I've seen these things miss areas completely. There's no doubt it was going to be cold, and in this case everything came about like was expected. But a few years ago, certain areas of the metroplex had light precep while others, you couldn't get around in. Local school districts in the light areas could still be open.
So what about teachers and staff that commute in from these places that didn't get light precip? You gonna backfill those with subs? You can't find subs anymore. Districts have been closing down because they can't get enough subs.
This was the right call.
This isn't an issue of subs or staff. If they're not fully staffed, or can't be, the weather is irrelevant. Besides, staff has been living outside of the district for over 30+ years. This isn't anything new. I used to get up at 5am to possibly take my wife to school (she teaches) back in the mid-90s when we only had one vehicle that was good on this stuff. Sometimes we went and other times we got cancelled.
I'm just saying the knee-jerk reaction to call it at the hint of any report of cold AND/OR bad roads is going to lead to poor decisions long term. We already call things in the spring too early when spring storms approach, but at least those are usually extracurricular (afternoon and evening) and safety is a huge overriding concern (tornadoes/hail).
The call Wednesday would have easily been made by 5am Thursday morning (or even midnight Thursday) and everyone would have been sufficiently notified. They might have had to get up a little earlier but notice was not going to be a problem. TV stations were running banners of ISD closings all freakin' day for heaven's sakes. Even after schools were out!
