Drove to work from SW Ft Worth to Western Center Blvd. Highways not too bad. Never got over 40 mph. Not many cars out.
Get ready bal. You're gonna in for a problem.

It's actually pleasant outside. Nothing near the cold of last year. Just had a snowball fight with the kids.

See y'all in ten days for the great Valentine's Day Eve blizzard of 2022.

I hope not.

Thought some models showed a nastier one in a week or two?

Weather.com shows us not dipping down below freezing after we pull out of this one on Monday 2/7. We're on the downhill after that whereas the average low increases day by day leading into spring. I'd say this is the last for the year.

Big picture, they made the right call and did it in a manner that allowed people plenty of time to plan. I do not see the point of kicking anyone in the balls over it, unless you just like to bich for biching sake

What's ironic is that years, decades, ago, they'd make the call no earlier than 6am the morning of. That was with less communication ability than currently. Now, with email, text, and mass media, they call it days ahead of time.

I still think they called it way too soon. I've seen these things miss areas completely. There's no doubt it was going to be cold, and in this case everything came about like was expected. But a few years ago, certain areas of the metroplex had light precep while others, you couldn't get around in. Local school districts in the light areas could still be open.

So what about teachers and staff that commute in from these places that didn't get light precip? You gonna backfill those with subs? You can't find subs anymore. Districts have been closing down because they can't get enough subs.

This was the right call.
DannyDuberstein
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Good point about the sub issue. Gotta expect high callouts even on a snow day that underwhelms, and as stretched as they've been, I'd imagine they figured they didnt have the capacity to deal with it

They can't get sick from being in the cold. Hypothermia or frost bite, maybe.

While this certainly could be the last blast of the year, that calendar is a crapshoot once you get 3-5+ days out.

My school is still short 15 teachers since classes started back in the fall. These students have never had a full time long term sub. Just a new sub every few days or another teacher filling in every class period. There are no where near enough sub to handle being open today or tomorrow.

Just got out and ran an errand with the wife. Not bad, even fun, in a good all wheel drive car and knowing how to drive in it. Unfortunately the other idiots around kind of ruin it. Would predict it is going to be absolutely awful later tonight and tomorrow morning. Huge stretches of smooth ice or what will be ice in between the rutted slushy areas. Everything will be ice.

If you need to get out, go soon or wait.

Hey neighbor.

Which roads did you take? Need to get to Harris hospital and looking to hear which roads are good.

Vickery is nearly always good.

Hulen would be fine except for the bridge over the river/train tracks.

Granbury/University should be fine.

Watching news, looks like Plano had a lot more ice than we did here in Arlington. Lots of split trees and it looked like branches had a good inch thick of ice caked on them.
planoaggie123
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Our trees are definitely weighted down with ice. One smaller crepe myrtle is struggling to stay up.

Neighbor 2 houses down has a tree with several sizeable branches that snapped off.

Ready for June….

It'll probably be fine. Check the roads before you go but at least where we are it's pretty loose and I don't think it'll change much overnight.

Usually I take 20-35 but wanted to stay away from 35 today. Took Bryant Irvin to the loop. No real problems. Didn't get to about 45mph on the highway. Bout 20 mph on residential roads and was fine. This was about 12:45 today. Oddly I didn't see a single vehicle in a ditch anywhere.

Last year we had 10+ people have to abandon vehicle outside our house. This year didn't have any but now one guy burning out trying to get up the hill and he's stuck. Neighbor across the street had his truck brought back home on a tow truck because he went to work today

This was the right call.

This isn't an issue of subs or staff. If they're not fully staffed, or can't be, the weather is irrelevant. Besides, staff has been living outside of the district for over 30+ years. This isn't anything new. I used to get up at 5am to possibly take my wife to school (she teaches) back in the mid-90s when we only had one vehicle that was good on this stuff. Sometimes we went and other times we got cancelled.

I'm just saying the knee-jerk reaction to call it at the hint of any report of cold AND/OR bad roads is going to lead to poor decisions long term. We already call things in the spring too early when spring storms approach, but at least those are usually extracurricular (afternoon and evening) and safety is a huge overriding concern (tornadoes/hail).

The call Wednesday would have easily been made by 5am Thursday morning (or even midnight Thursday) and everyone would have been sufficiently notified. They might have had to get up a little earlier but notice was not going to be a problem. TV stations were running banners of ISD closings all freakin' day for heaven's sakes. Even after schools were out!
DannyDuberstein
How long do you want to ignore this user?
It may lead to 1-2 days canceled unnecessarily every 5 years. Think of the children!

It's not about time to communicate. It's about parents figuring out if they need a plan for their kid or not and getting more than 2 hours to figure it out. Don't worry. We're not headed down some slippery slope here. And the weather is relevant if staffing is stretched to the max, which it is
planoaggie123
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Honestly this one was super clear what was happening.

You are over-thinking. They cancelled early because it was clear what was happening. Almost no debate. The only debate was how much freezing rain, sleet or snow. Roads would not be safe for buses in texas no matter the ratio of those things.

What are thoughts on tomorrow morning
DannyDuberstein
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Super ****ty early unless a street was somehow clear and dry before tonight. What was still kind of crunchy today with a bit of grip will be compacted, frozen over solid ice

How long do you want to ignore this user?
I am just working from home tomorrow. Not going to mess with roads. I may get out some Saturday but worst case I am downing several Margaritas on Sunday….

The thought of donuts does sound amazing however.

Our street was passable today.

Then the slush got smushed and is now frozen. It will be a skating rink in the morning. I would imagine my street is not the outlier.

Can confirm. Went out for my nightly walk. Previously slushy spots were frozen solid and slick. Dry spots were just fine. I plan to wait a few hours and attempt to run mid-morning. Good luck to those driving early, I would not want to do that.

We prepped for several days of shut down as our neighborhood has lots of hills/fairly steep inclines. Not gonna even try to leave the house til Saturday afternoon.

Yeah I peeked out there and anything that wasn't plowed or shoveled is probably slick as owl ***** Glad we got nowhere to go.
