What a debut campaign.
Except the show goes on as Bucky Ball is going to the Big Dance!
Bucky McMillan and the Fightin’ Texas Aggies were announced as a No. 10 seed in the South Region during Sunday’s 2026 NCAA Selection Show.
Headed to Oklahoma City, the Maroon & White will face No. 7 seed Saint Mary’s on Thursday in the first round of the 2026 NCAA Tournament.
Back when A&M hired McMillan in early April, making March Madness 11 months later seemed, well, mad.
The crazy dream battled its way through a number of obstacles. It’s oft-repeated, but when McMillan arrived in Aggieland, he was the last Power Five coach hired, was two weeks late to the portal and inherited a team that had just 1.7 percent of its returning production on its roster.
Even when prized portal pickup Mackenzie Mgbako was lost to a season-ending foot injury, the Aggies battled.
A cast of characters that includes All-SEC forward Rashaun Agee and go-to guard Rylan Griffen, along with guards Marcus Hill, Rubén Dominguez and Pop Isaacs, the Aggies have brought the fast-paced offense that launches 3-pointer after 3-pointer and the crucial mother-in-law defense to life as the 12th Man has quickly fallen in love with the style known as “Bucky Ball.”
Picked to finish 13th in the SEC, A&M used its unique brand of hoops to jump out to a 7-1 start in league play en route to an 11-7 finish and a tie for fourth in the conference. Overall, the surprising Ags put together a 21-10 regular-season record before falling in the second round of the SEC Tournament on Thursday.
Highlights of the year include a chaotic win at Auburn, a road victory in Austin for the first time since 2002, a bludgeoning of Georgia and an 11-point triumph over Kentucky in the home finale earlier this month before closing conference play with a marathon win in Baton Rouge.
For the program’s fifth consecutive 20-win season, A&M is headed to its fourth straight NCAA Tournament. Extending the current streak brings the Aggies closer to equaling the school’s longest run of consecutive dances, which was six straight from 2006-11.
TexAgs will have more Selection Sunday coverage shortly.
