San Antonio yesterday afternoon.
Possibly the biggest Western I've ever seen in person.

Man, you need to go down to Hebbronville, Mirando City, Zapata, Rendado area. Pretty sure they all born 5' long and grow from there.

Recent finds. Been a slower year, maybe because of good rainfall.

Ha! Yessir I've heard those stories but never experienced it. Decades of hunting and working outdoors in South Texas I never actually saw one of those monsters with my own eyes.

But this dude yesterday was every bit of 5', at least.

On the topic of non venomous snake bites, they have little blade/like teeth so they bleed quite a bit but not painful at all really. Just annoying because the bite does need some disinfecting just to be on the safe side and that can burn a bit.

They love strawberries if you ever want to give them a treat.

Maybe so. This is the third I've found within 50ish feet of each other in a little drainage ditch behind my house. Much better than mouth bq's copperhead infestation

Western Milk snake. Never found one when I lived in Taylor County and frequented neighboring counties. Got to photograph an Arizona Mountain King Snake (which looks similar) back in the day.

First one I have ever seen in the Big Country, and I have spent most of my life outdoors.

I miss the Big Country sometimes. Worked at the Abilene Zoo for 6 years. But, love East Tenn. far more. No hot temps. Reptile-wise - it's not quite West Texas.

Probably the largest Hognose I've found. Measured him 30" long, for which he wasn't really cooperative. Also, I've never seen one almost completely dark/blackish with no markings. Maybe shed recently?

He didn't care to put on much of a show, just wanted to hang out. Cool snakes.

That's very similar to the one I posted on page 14. Almost no visible markings.

It's not uncommon to find completely jet black colored ones in the wild. At one of the zoos I worked at, we got a hognose that was completely maroon. I should have kept that one. The largest one I have ever seen was around 36 inches; when is hooded, it was about 4 inches across.

And, that one is a male.

I need a snake lesson. How do you know it's a male? I'm assuming something about the vent.
