Most of the time that's all they ever do, rear back, open mouth, and act irritable.

Anyone know what kind of spider this is? My son said it bit him and it hurts.

He froze in the second pic as we approached. Gently Tossed the rock which landed on his back but he didn't strike at it, just kept his mouth open and his tail moving as if he had rattles.
Spooky as that's right where I dove hunt. Will be mowing good before hunting.
What are you going to mow?

Awesome pics. Thanks!

I've lived here since 2002, and have seen dozens of water snakes, ribbons, mud snakes, legless lizards, but this is only the second nope rope I've seen while mowing the ditch.

I'm pretty sure that this turtle is an African Spur-Thighed Tortoise. I had one as a pet about 20 years ago. Also, the area they found it is not the general range of the Texas Tortoise. They are primarily far south Texas west towards Big Bend and into Mexico.

Probably someone's pet that got loose.

Course, I could be wrong. The gular plate just looks wrong (fork looking thing at the bottom) - usually, Texas Tortoises have an extended gular plate.

Also, they get up to 175 pounds, so probably not something they want to keep as a pet. I have a buddy in Lubbock who has some; if they still have it, he'd probably take it.
I know a lot about a little, and a little about a lot.

That's someone's pet African spurred tortoise...

Texas tortoises don't quite make it that far north. They do look really similar though.

Western Diamondback!!!! I'm so tired of rattlesnakes. I believe my little 15 acre patch of Archer County has had more rattlesnake per acre than anywhere I've ever been lol.

Get a donkey

Our place in Coryell looks like rattlesnake heaven. Never seen one in over 10 years and I've looked hard. Never seen any snake on the property. No coyotes either. Donkeys are savage.

Howdy. I need to settle a discussion with my wife. We are staying a couple nights between Leakey and Camp Wood which is Real County.
Question is, how many snakes per acre would be average for the hill country? I so far have no pictures to share because we have not seen any.

Oh…she says 300 per acre and I say 2-3.

I'd guess lower than 2-3, depending on terrain. Likely pockets with more, pockets with less.
300 is absurdly off though.

If you were inclined to, you could communicate to your spouse that 43560 sq ft (1 acre) divided by 300 = 142.5 square feet per snake. Meaning that, theoretically, you should be able to find a snake in any 10 foot by 14.25 foot rectangle.
Don't figure that will gain you any advantage in the matter, but if she didn't immediately get and wear snake boots when outside, you would have standing to express doubt in the sincerity of her assertion of 300 snakes per acre.
But maybe just keep this calculation on the down low.

I hunt not too far from there and our snake population, particular rattlesnakes, is almost nonexistent. Our Indigo population is booming and likely the cause of the lack of rattlesnakes.

While I'd guess 300 is too high I think you'd be surprised how many snakes are in any particular area that you never encounter, especially in that part of the world where the majority are fossorial.

Wife is never wrong so it must be 300.

Yeah, if you are actually looking for snakes and know where to look, you can find some quite easily in the right habitats.

Others - quite difficult. I've only seen 3 Eastern Hognoses in the field (my favorite snake).
I know a lot about a little, and a little about a lot.
