Neighborhood nope rope. The recent storms and flooding have brought a bunch of debris up onto the trails and in the parks bordering the lake and bayou.
He just wants a little kiss.

Mom sent me this one as she was walking in from back door for the night. She took the picture from inside because snakes give her the willies!! Eastern Rat Snake I believe. Wrapped around the patio chairs!!

Yes, good work! I meant to edit it to western rat snake. I posted while on phone with mom and she was giving me the play by play on how it was slithering across the table and how she was tripping. Arlington, TX backing up to a park.
Do we do lizards, as well? Southern Randall County ((Canyon). Also saw a horny toad (Texas horned lizard) a few feet away from this guy
Those little moccasins are funny. They have a lot of "personality". Mostly bluff, but you don't want to be that one time they actually land an envenomating bite.
If you have some steel toe boots you can give them a gentle nudge and they'll put on a heck of a "best leave me alone" show with mouth wide open.
Also I saw a gigantic Blue Spiny Lizard at Pace Bend park west of Austin last weekend. Thing was well over a foot long. Very cool cooling critter. It ran under the entrance shack as I drove up.

Its a type of whiptail lizard. Their genetics are funny because they are one of the few kinds of lizard which regularly reproduces by parthenogenesis (asexual reproduction) but also can reproduce sexually. Therefore, differentiation between species is somewhat strange as entire populations have been known to be genetically identical.
I'd say probably six lined racerunner, but 12f could likely give you a more definitive answer.

Interesting! Learned about parthenogenesis in my Game Birds & Ornamental Fowl class but specific to turkeys. Wasn't aware some lizard species can do that as well.

Thanks, I should have said, he was 10-12" long. A little later, one about 8" long did a circle in and out of the open barn door.
I saw a fun one at our house the other day too.
Eastern Ohio, I'm guessing rat but not 100% on that.

I gotta say, this thread over the year has taught me a ton and completely changed the way I view snakes - but I still don't have the guts to take hold of a good sized one in the wild.
So snake appreciation and snake handling are two very different things. My understanding is the non-venomous ones the bite still bleeds a lot and hurts.
