Blue jays are in the same family as crows and ravens. They are very intelligent. Be nice to them because crows, ravens, and blue jays can recognize individual human faces and can hold a grudge. Put some unsalted unshelled peanuts on a fence rail or table to attract blue jays. You should be able to get a picture as they are looking for the best peanut.

It should also be noted that blue jays, like crows and ravens are ravenous predators. They especially like to predate the young of other birds.

Think of something we all love to do in the fall, outdoors.

Had a good sized group of cedar waxwings stripping berries from yaupons along the edge of my yard yesterday after the rain. I watched them for a while with binoculars but no pics. Got the camera out this morning and went to take another look but they were all gone. As were the berries.

Pretty sure it is actually a cliff swallow... they are easy to confuse though.

Not a bird but wanted to get in on this thread.

This little guy has been pimping around the patio all afternoon. Tried to get him showing off for the ladies but he was a little wary when I approached and tried to look as much like a leaf as possible.

It is a cliff swallow. There were cave swallows there also.

There's the cave swallow. Really shows how similar the birds are.

I don't necessarily have great photos, but maybe some fun ones. I recognized the killdeer eggs on the first page. I can't tell you how many times I stopped the tractor in the spring to move a clutch of eggs on top of the bed. Often, momma would be nearby, and I'd get the full "my wing is broken" show.

Rare to see the babies, but they are impossibly cute. Look like a Q-tip, a little fuzzy ball on the end of a stick.

Went on a family walk over the weekend and encountered a lot of wildlife, including a Killdeer and her two young. Pretty cool moment to be able to show my kids how mom was "hurt" and distracting us from her two chicks. They thought it was really cool.

What's the story on the owls? Do they usually set up shop around your place?
I used to lease a farm with a big prairie dog town in Randall County. They would be seasonal visitors. Kind of a pain, since all eradication had to stop while they were in town. Still enjoy the little boogers.

But the photos are all from Hale County. They popped up near my mom's place a few years ago, and came back a couple of years in a row. Then they stopped. Those dug their own burrows, as opposed to taking over the old dog holes.

Did anyone notice there were two owls in the third photo?

One of my favorites, though it's hard to see. Momma and baby hummingbird, at the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum. Great place to visit.

Walked up on this covey of quail, could not figure why they just stood there and didn't flush. Finally realized it was at sunset, and we were directly up sun from them.

I had quite a few migrants show up by the patio yesterday. Not too shabby shooting from my recliner through a double pane glass door, I think!

A (not so)Common Yellowthroat. These are usually found in marshy areas around the state. It is also hard to get the eyes to show on theses guys.

A Gray Catbird all fluffed up after taking his bath. They are called Catbird because their song does sound like a cat mewing.

Black Throated Green Warbler.

Summer Tanager. If you don't like bees or wasps, these are the birds for you.

I need some woods, Sid. Nice birds for the yard.
