Scrolling through my phone and found this red-shouldered hawk from September'18. It was right after we bought our house.

Not a birder. But came here to say that we have a great place down in Brazoria County. Here's the site: Gulf Coast Bird Observatory

I haven't gotten out much because of the lockdown, otherwise I would have been down around the coast for the spring migrants. So here are a few local birds from my back yard in B/CS from the past few weeks.

The Carolina Wrens have been busy with nesting underway.

A Yellow Rumped Warbler. It must be getting into breeding plumage, they usually are a bit more drab looking.

The Cedar Waxwings came by and devoured a few Yaupon berries last week.

I think this is a Nashville Warbler. It was so quick I didn't get a good look.

The Ruby Throated Hummingbirds finally started showing up 2-3 weeks ago.

There were a bunch of vermilion flycatchers flittering around while we hunted hogs in Devine last weekend. Beautiful birds. Sorry, no pics.

For those who clicked on the link and read that the observatory is closed -

Don't tell anyone - this is just between you and me, but the observatory is open. And the birding is crazy good right now. We are glamping for a few nights across the street at Quintana Beach County Park, and we are walking back over there in a few minutes. We will be here for the next few days too, so if any OB'er is there, post a reply.

Again - shhhhhh... don't tell anyone!

Beautiful shots!
Thank you.

I heard a report a few days ago of some herons nesting on a small island in a pond in a local park in town. I went out yesterday to check it out. A pair of Yellow Crowned Night Herons are already sitting on eggs, while a pair of Green herons are busy trying to build theirs now.

Green Heron nest building activity.

Is it true that the red dye in a lot of hummingbird food is harmful?
Yes, and they don't need it to be attracted. 1 part sugar and 4 parts water. The red on a feeder will attract them.

I gave up my bows and arrows and guns several years ago for health reasons and now hunt with a camera lens.

Well this one is more fun for sure...

1.Broad billed hummingbird
2.Roseate spoonbills/American alligator/Great white egret/?Florida gar
3. More roseate spoonbills in a rookery
4. Sea otters
5. White breasted nuthatch
6. Scarlet tanager
7. Bottlenose dolphins
8. Whooping cranes, breeding pair with juvenile
9. Fledgling Great horned owlet
10. More sea otter

That's what I came up with.

The alligator and spoonbills pictures were taken at a place known as "the rookery", which is one of the Houston Audubon birding sites in High Island. Egrets, spoonbills, and cormorants nest by the hundreds there, and the gators wait for the baby and fledgling birds that fall out of the nest.

The gator sure got everyone's attention when he crawled up on the bank with a gar in its mouth.

Caladan, something tells me we may have crossed paths as some point. I know and have shot with Sid. I have seen sunchaser's shots before.

Teacher Wife '82 loved it, and I still maintain our Martin house and hummingbird feeders. I also have her bird book with all the sightings and dates by the pics.

Dang, tough to post after sunchaser's pics. Here's some from around my neighborhood in FL.

Caracara

Osprey

Ibis

Not sure what this guy is, but they're fun to watch. Very active hunters compared to other wading birds.

Wood stork

Bonus plant... there's a ghost orchid on the middle of this tree. Pretty rare flower as far as I know.

I haven't birded with anyone else, so I don't think we have met. I did contact Sid, and we will probably get together for some birding/shooting once this Covid thing is over. Although he never replied to my last email, so maybe he ghosted me.

Shoot me an email if you want.

Take out the spaces of course.

I'm thinking the same. Here is a closer view of one, along with a green heron.

Here's a couple of rare items - two pics of a paraque, and one pic of the extremely rare Arizona arboreal ground squirrel...

It is a little more difficult because it is in its winter plumage. Their feathers turn into the grey, red, & white coloration during the breeding season.

By the way, the Merlin App from Cornell is a great free resource for bird ID.

That active Hunter is 100% a tricolored heron as mentioned above.

Haha, no I didn't ghost you! Stupid email put it as junk for some reason. I found it. Next time maybe just text me if you send another to confirm.

But yeah, we need to get together sometime.

Jays, crows, and ravens are all closely related and highly intelligent birds.
