Certain the times of year with a proper license and not in a residential neighborhood, many here would be happy to help with the doves.

With the right kind of license and the right kind of trap, some folks will help with those doves IN a residential neighborhood too. Help you to trap and band them that is. We trap and band 15-20 ww doves per year for TPWD in our backyard. If you are interested in doing it as a volunteer, the TPWD folks are typically happy to have volunteers to help them hit their quotas. You do have to release the doves you trap though...

My kids would love this and we have a ton of white wings. Do you have a recommendation on how to go about this? Is there a division within TPWD?

Wasn't able to get great pictures, but here is a pair of Pileated Woodpeckers and a Bald Eagle from the last few weeks.

Where are you located? Each district in the wildlife division has a quota they are supposed to meet. You just need to figure out who the biologist for your area is and let them know you are interested in helping. I am working with one of the "urban biologists" assigned to Houston. She sets us up with the bands and traps each year and gives us a data sheet that we send back to her when we finish banding. If you want to IM me your info, I can get her to pass your name along to the area biologist and see if they want help. I am not really sure what is going to happen this year with all the Covid stuff, but we typically get the bands in May and do most of our trapping in June and July.

I'll play...

Stellar's Jay
Great White Egret (Edit: actually might be a Great blue heron in white phase looking closer. I usually tell by the legs, but his bill is wider and seems light for a great White egret)
Reddish egret (normal color phase)
Reddish egret (white color phase)
Double crested cormorant

No pics, but I've seen a carcara on the side of the highway between Chuck Norris's place and Navasota High School over the past week or two. It's usually on the shoulder, feasting on roadkill. I had no idea that they were this far north.

Also, thanks to the OB I actually knew what it was the first time I saw it. It took me a second because I only knew of them in far south Texas, but I was 100% when I saw it the second time.
Cool birds. They are starting to be a lot more prevalent in Coryell County. Last few times I've dumped a deer or pig carcass in my back pasture, within a few hours there have been 4 caracaras on it.

They have been rapidly spreading north since I was a kid in Victoria county 20 or so years ago. When I was very young it was unheard of to see one down there, but by the time I was in Junior high they were a fairly common sight.

Before the caracaras all we had were turkey vultures. Now the caracaras almost outnumber the black vultures, (which are also spreading northward even more rapidly.)

The first Caracara I ever saw was south of Austin back in the mid-90s. They are now very thick in eastern Travis County.

I have taken a lot of pictures of them as well as my black labs. It's hard for me to get a good picture of either especially around the eyes.

I have several types of Hummingbird feeders on my back porch. They seem to like this type of feeder more than any of the others. Perhaps it's because there's a place for them to stand instead of having to fly constantly. Really like the video!

Yes. Only one I've ever seen in TX. He hung around for one afternoon only.

I had read that they like grape jelly. Once it seemed like he would be hanging around a hummingbird feeder for a while, I ran inside and grabbed some grape jelly and set it out right behind my shop door. In less than five minutes he was at the plate.

Thanks! I only found the squirrel by chance. I first thought he was an escaped pet, but I did a little internet research anyway. I had no idea they were native to this area.

We are lucky that we have woods behind our house. All sorts of interesting critters have come out of there.

They are awesome creatures and highly nocturnal. I've only ever seen one. It was gliding between a couple big live oaks in front of the Catholic Church in my hometown of Inez, TX right at the last light of day. I knew at the time they existed but didn't realize they made it that far south.

Baltimore Orioles migrate through for a few weeks in the spring and fall. In addition to the hummingbird nectar and grape jelly, the like orange halves/quarters and black grapes. Beautiful birds.

Caladan, 8 to 10 years ago I rented a house in Raintree subdivision. We had and Oriole hit the back window and knock itself out. Also had plenty of pigs and deer too. Never seen one since, Oriole that is. Have an occasional indigo and painted bunting here in spring and summer.

Of all of the awesome and even endangered species you have pictures of; the alligator eating the long nose or spotted gar with the roseate spoonbills in the background, is my favorite.

2.Roseate spoonbills/American alligator/Great white egret/?Florida gar
3. More roseate spoonbills in a rookery
4. Sea otters
5. White breasted nuthatch
6. Scarlet tanager
7. Bottlenose dolphins
8. Whooping cranes, breeding pair with juvenile
9. Fledgling Great horned owlet
10. More sea otter

I can't comment on 1,5 and 6, but the rest look correct. I was having trouble with the gar species in the alligators mouth... it didn't look like anything in Texas but figured it was either spotted or long nose. Your ID makes more sense.

That's what I came up with.

The alligator and spoonbills pictures were taken at a place known as "the rookery", which is one of the Houston Audubon birding sites in High Island. Egrets, spoonbills, and cormorants nest by the hundreds there, and the gators wait for the baby and fledgling birds that fall out of the nest.

The gator sure got everyone's attention when he crawled up on the bank with a gar in its mouth.

Well then that's not a Florida Gar... probably just a young alligator gar then.
