Thanks for the tips! I definitely am going with no notions of finding permit or tarpon, I was thought it'd be silly to be on the beach and not sling a clouser or 5 at some Jacks if I could find them.

Never flown internationally with fishing gear. Anything I need to know thats different than domestic?

Not many differences flying with gear internationally than locally. Maybe pack the high $ reels in your carry on if you can fit em. I traveled with rods and reels in checked bags though and didn't have an issue. Leave the knifes at home if that's part of your usual kit.

I know you said you can't afford a guide, but do you have an old iPhone laying around? I got this tip from an expat in Belize so may or may not work in Mexico. Their import taxes are really high so a 2 year old iPhone can be bartered for maybe 300-500 worth of services such as fishing trips or excursions.

Some international flights have different checked bag size restrictions.

Pre-book a taxi to your hotel for the best rate. I forget the name of the better outfits but hit up the travel board and they'll steer you right.

I think I'd go dolphin over gladesman. But they did just go under and change names so maybe they had some issues.

The ankona could be tops on that list but it's 3-5k high in my mind.

I've never been on a gladesmen, but I have been on a Dolphin. I picked the gladesmen on style and being nimble. I thought the Dolphin would be a bigger boat than enlace had in mind. As far as the Ankona goes - I would have put almost any shadow cast at the top of that list... but that particular Ankona has to be one of the least attractive ones I've seen.

As far as rods, always carry on. I carried a 2pc 9ft on Delta and they stored it up front. Don't check your rod, just carryon with confidence. If it won't fit in the over head just have the flight attendant store it up front.

If the Dolphin is in the budget, I'd go with the Renegade. Offer the dude $10,500 and see what happens.

I've fished off of the Super Skiff a number of times and Dolphin has had a great rep but lacked the marketing of other skiffs. That Renegade is like a 4-degree deadrise skiff. She'll knock your fillings loose but float in spit and be dead quiet on the pole.

Them going bankrupt is not uncommon in the boat building world. I've heard they've already been purchased out of bankruptcy and working on getting production ramped up again.

You shoulda bought my BT Micro and kept her local but that 16' Ankona would certainly fit. A good buddy of mine from A&M Galveston had the first Salt Marsh Heron with a 20hp etec - fished all over Jacksonville, FL and loved it. You should certainly look into them. You might be able to swing a new hull or if you watch the microskiff forums find a very lightly used one for a bargain.

I concur with Rick's post.

I also know a couple guys who run 16' Shadowcasts and that rig at $8500 is a tremendous deal. Without seeing it in person I'd probably say it's worth close to that- I mean, I'd offer about $6K and see what he says but be willing to pay $8K. They're a very capable micro-skiff. Personally, I'd draw the line between a "nano" and a "micro" somewhere around the Gheenoe NMZ. Meaning that making the jump from that NMZ (which I think they widened the beam at the transom and renamed it the Low Tide 10) and that East Cape Gladesman.

Sounds like you're looking for a something that toes that line.

That Shadowcast is an excellent choice. I'd call that a microskiff. The fit & finish aren't the greatest but it will get you skinny, pole quietly and comfortably handle 2 guys. You can even carry 3 in a pinch if they're not big dudes like me.

I would love to pick that shadowcast up, but it's just not in the cards right now. A bare bones 16' tiller shadowcast or something close to that will be my next boat. The slight upgrade I'm looking to get is a gheenoe NMZ that my buddy re-built last year. He's getting a bigger boat and is selling the noe and may hook me up with a good deal on it so if I can sell my boat for a decent price then I may pick his up.

An NMZ would be good for what you're looking for. I had one for a couple years but for me, it was a 1-man boat. But I'm over 100# heavier than you.

That being said, I wouldn't think you can run across the open bay in one like you can in La Chancla. In your nano you can't really swamp it, you just get soaking wet and the chop washes right over the board. The NMZ can get swamped quickly if you're not careful.

Yeah, honestly I'm not 100% set on selling La Chancla. If I can get the price I want, I'll sell, but I do really love my little boat. Like you said, you can't swamp it unlike a gheenoe and it's actually surprisingly dry for being so low to the water. It's just the one person capacity gets old sometimes doing the solo pole, cast and catch dance. I do have buddies with bigger skiffs so part of me just wants to keep La Chancla for the days I can't line my schedule up with those guys'. It'd be nice to have it in the future too when I go solo and don't want to deal with cleaning a bigger boat afterwards. I'm in no hurry and I haven't gotten much interest yet so if it doesn't work out I have no problem hanging onto it.

Hit up a new creek today. There's not a lot of casting room, but once you get the distance to the opposite bank dialed in, it's easy to drop flies in the shade.



Really wanted to catch some snapper, but couldnt find any. I know they're in there; they have to be. Anyway, saw this snook about 50 feet away and got him to strike on the first cast. Ended up with some ladyfish as well. Pretty good creek, just wish there was more space to walk and cast.

My son and I fished out of Hopedale, Louisiana on Thursday. This was our second time in what we hope to be an annual event. Weather was not favorable, but we managed to get some in the boat. This is my first legitimate Red on a fly (i did catch one in Florida in June that would fit in your pocket, so i don't count it). Friday got cancelled for weather, but we had a great time.

I'll give it my best shot. Let me preface it by saying that I am relatively new to saltwater flyfishing. I am still pretty ignorant of many things, and just plain bad in terms of skill level. Nonetheless, I absolutely love it.

We started at the Hopedale Marina with guide, Bailey Short. Let me say that Bailey is an outstanding guide, and really good guy (even for an LSU grad). I was hoping for some sunshine, but it never happened. The good news was that there was almost no wind all day. We fished a sand flat area for a few hours with no luck. You could see the big tails scattered around, but the water was so shallow that the fish would move out before we could get within range. Had a few shots there, but our casting skills are just not good enough (yet) to hook one.

We moved over to a place that had a long straight line of rocks. It was essentially a jetty, but much smaller and shorter than I had ever seen. On the south side of the rocks, we fished in about 2 foot of water. Big school of Redfish but could not get one to eat. My son pulled a fly right through the middle of the school. Fish were chasing and fighting each other to get to the fly, but not a single one of them ate it. Weird. All of the sudden our guide came off the platform, and we motored around to the other side of the rocks. He had seen some "floaters" (his term, I still don't know what that means) over there. This was in 8 feet of water. As soon as they surfaced, my son put the fly in the area, let it sink a little and started stripping. That's when the big boy came in. Son was using a big black/purple tarpon fly . Soon after, we came upon a school and I finally got my fly in front of them. Once mine was hooked, son through out second fly to get two in the boat.

Weather was terrible on Friday, so the guide cancelled that day and gave us the deposit back. Folks that don't get it have asked "So, you fish all day to get 3 fish in the boat?" Our reply is "Yep, and it was fantastic!!"

My twin brother, Rob, best friend, Kevin (kbo here) and a buddy from California fished Louisiana Friday and Saturday with Baron and Harris. Conditions were less than optimal but we put in work and dealt with the cold and wind just fine. Lots of laughs, loads of fish, tons of slime.

Big fish on the trip was my 43 pound black drum... They are so prehistorically ugly that they are pretty damn cool. She tested the Mako 9500 on my 10wt well, pulled like a freight train.

We caught several black drum, almost all at or over 20 pounds. I didn't get a big red this trip but caught plenty of solid slot plus fish. Kevin caught a beautiful 21# redfish on the first fly he ever tied in his life... she got pretty close to straightening the hook, try as she might. Rob caught a personal best 20 pound redfish and Kameron got big red on the trip with a 24 pound beaut with a heart for a spot on her tail.

Another year, conditions be damned, in the books as a success.

Caught this one in 2014 and knowing we fish the same general area over there in LA, I wonder if it could be the same fish. That would be pretty awesome if so.

We just booked a trip with Scott Null for Grand Isle in Feb, there are four of us going so no fly fishing the first two days (though I am making sure a rod will be on the boat just in case) but two of us are staying an extra day just to get to throw flies at the big reds.

I have a tarpon pursuit stick (trolling motor) in the mail and I'm looking for advice and opinions on mounting from those of you who have them or have fished with them. How's yours mounted and what would you change? The primary plan is to use it where it's too deep to pole (jetties / surf), but I may end up using it to work marsh creeks some too.

I can't decide on port vs starboard mounting. I'm a righty and I strip line to my left, so I'm concerned about snags if I mount it on the port side. My push-pole holders are starboard mounted so if I put the TM on that side, I'll probably have to eat up some extra deck space so they don't interfere with each-other. It's a remote control unit so left/right hand operation of the motor shouldn't be a concern.

The gunnels on my boat have enough height over my casting deck that I don't usually need a stripping basket, but I'm not opposed to one if it will make fishing around the TM easier.

Thoughts on how critical it is to get it on the centerline? I've read a few opinions that say offset is better because you can see which direction the unit is pointing while an angler is on the bow, and others that say it won't track right if it's offset. The bow on my boat is pretty high, not sure, but moving the motor back off the bow may help keep it in the water in a chop.

Is it worth adding a second quick connect puck in the stern of the boat to pull the motor off the bow when I'm on the flats? I'm getting a little short on space on my rear deck but I could probably rig something up for storage. Or is it simpler to just leave it at home on bay days?

Wet towel over the TM mount would probably work fine. If I were you/ when I fish with you, I will probably bring my stripping basket mainly bc I'd be concerned with my fly line blowing over the side and getting caught in the trolling motor. Probably a great way to ruin a $100 fly line real quick.

I'm sure the more you get off centerline with your TM the worse it'll track. If nothing else, it'll have to work harder and use more power bc of the eccentricity, i.e. it's going to fighting more drag from your hull to go in a straight line bc vectors and such. The TM on our 20' tunnel V bay boat wasn't centerline mounted and it's seemed to do fine.

I support a second mount on the stern. Always great to have options and it's not like weight is super critical for this boat. I too am a bit concerned about keeping the TM in the water on the bow so the stern mount may be a necessity sometimes. Idk how you'll plan on wiring that though. Will you run wiring to the stern as well that you can just put some caps on when not in use so all you have to move is the TM or move the batteries y todos every time you want relocate the TM?
