Surprised this thread wasn't started sooner!

My dad was the former Southwest Regional editor for Tide magazine and 11 years ago he wrote a book (forward written by the legend Lefty Kreh) on Texas Salt water flies. Not a humble brag, but it is a really good reference book for Texas Saltwater fly fishing!

Actually, I have been looking for a place on the river as well.

You guys think I'll have any trouble flying with 1/0, 2/0 size hook flies? I'm going to check some stuff - but the BARE essentials I'd rather carry on: fly rods, fly reels, leaders, flies, & sunglasses. I figure in a disaster I can do without a lot of the rest of it, but those are must haves.

Totally depends on the TSA agent. I check my flies but carry on most of the rest of the stuff. But coming home from Florida the TSA agent tried to confiscate my pliers. I argued and they let me on with them.

I had zero issues on my flight to and from NYC a few weeks back. Carried on rod, reel and flies.

What size flies?

I've carried on rods, reels, and multiple spools of leader/tippet material (even knot-able wire) with no issue. And until this last time going through security in Ft. Lauderdale nobody has had an issue with the pliers or anything else.

I had to educate the TSA dude and he went to talk to a supervisor and then let me carry them on.

Small flies aren't an issue but 1/0 and 2/0 sizes might raise some concerns with the tards working for TSA.

For sure had some 1/0 in my box. Didn't get a single question or even a glance at my bag.

Lows @ night as low as 59-60*, highs during that stretch up to 75*. That should be nice. Maybe the biting insects will go into hibernation.

The Laguna Madre Fly Fishing Assn is a pretty cool organization. I'm not the most involved member, but the club is pretty active at it's core. The emails go out to about 75-80 to estimate group size.

Anyway, they have an annual beach trip leaving SPI and driving up to the Port Mansfield jetties. Of course there are the usual obstacles like wet sand, washouts, and naked people - from the email:

quote:
It appears that the red tide has cleared out for a while and we have decent weather predicted for next Saturday November 14th. So lets go for a trip up the beach! Get your surf fly gear together and lets meet at the SPI Convention Center parking lot a 6:00 a.m. and head up the beach and find some fish. As we have in the past we will caravan so if you do not have a four wheel drive truck you can jump in with some who does. LMFFA will provide lunch and drinks for the trip. However beware the latest beach report from Tiki Tommy indicates numerous naked fishermen and sunbathers between mile marks 9 and 13.

Not sure if that is incentive or not to make the trip.

Louisiana trip got cancelled. Captain said winds expected to be pretty high and even though we could get to the marsh on the big boat, the skiff fishing was going to suck if not dangerous. Soooo . . .

Sorry to hear that man. You are in good company though, was gonna play hooky tomorrow with the 5mph winds two days after frontal pass but just can't do it with the positions I have on in the office. Need to get on a good run so I can size the portfolio down and fish before the water gets too cold!

Well, finally pulled the trigger on a new 8 wt outfit. Went with the marshfly journyman 8wt and will pair it with a tibor everglades (matte black with redfish engraved). Have been looking for another setup to go with my TFO BVK with the Hatch Finatic.

Got out yesterday. Wind was still up in the morning but it died down at about noon. Overcast until about 10 ish and the the sun came out.

Didn't really see any fish in the morning but got to explore some new marsh areas with the high tides and freshwater runoff from all the rain.

Founds a nice pod of upper slot and oversized reds on the surface under a tern on an oystery flat. Eased up on them with the trolling motor and picked one off the edge with my spinning rod. Good sized fish but it broke me off on an oyster bed. I was getting ready to string up the fly rod and ease back up to the school when a boat motored through the flat and spooked all the fish. I saw a few duck hunters early in the morning and then no one else until I finally found some fish that were sightcastable and someone showed up and spooked em.

Went back into the marsh now that the tide was incoming again and landed a small slot fish but no more sightcasting opportunities so I didn't even string up the fly rod. Pretty bummed because I was hoping to get a few more reds on the fly this year before the weather pushes them all deeper.

Bummer. Rescheduled for sometime in the future or just plain cancelled? I was looking forward to some popper destruction photo/video.

Sorry it took so long to reply. I think I was in denial all day yesterday; all my stuff is still packed and sitting here in the hallway by the door Anyone want to take a destination fly fishing trip @ the last minute??? I'm all packed and ready to go!

For all practical purposes it is completely canceled. It was a group of neighbors and friends, a dozen of us, that were supposed to go together on a mothership and fish from small skiffs (self guided). It wasn't designed as a fly fishing trip exclusively, only two of us are feather heads, but it was going to work out great we could all go and get what we wanted out of it. The boat captain called the trip because he said the winds were going to be too high. I'll take his word for it because wind guru and other sites say differently - I guess that's just how it's meant to be. Maybe the wind is too high, maybe he had to take his wife to the casino. The mutual coincidence of everyone having the time away from work to pull it off again in highly unlikely.

I was so looking forward to seeing those reds crush poppers I had extra goPro batteries and memory cards to catch all the action. Ben Paschal is taking delivery on his new Hell's Bay this week and christening it in the Louisiana Marsh later this month. I think I'll give him a all and see if he can shoehorn me in sometime so I can put some of these huge flies to work before I shelve them all.

ETA - the very very occasional poster tarponfly is down here fishing a couple days and called from Rattlesnake bay wondering if I had suggestions for finding clear water. He'd left mansfield and worked everything west down all the way to Cullen's and couldn't find any pretty water. If the weekend's norther wasn't enough to stir things up I'd imagine 12-18" of rainfall in the past two weeks has created enough runoff that the water in Peyton's is drinkable. Not a good time to take out fishing frustrations.

Those aerial shots they got were awesome. I don't know that those quadcopter drones are quite cheap enough that I'd want to take on in the bay yet.

When does your marshfly rod get in? I've been interested in them for a while but haven't heard any reports. Do they have any kind of storefront in Houston where you can go feel some rods or are they strictly online?

Unsure on when the rod arrives, haven't received shipping confirm yet. I will give a full review once arrived. I want to like it since its local.

Right after I posted that IG Gladesman tarponfly stopped by on his way home because a ground wire had come loose on a tail light. We put a new eye on and he was off, but before he pulled out of the drive I snapped pic of the

cp- is that the same dude who is in Corpus and was selling his Kevlar EC Vantage last year? IIRC, he said he was going for a smaller EC to get skinnier.
Centerpole90
How long do you want to ignore this user?
AG
Yes, that's him. The Vantage was just way more boat and more draft, I think, than he wanted. You'd like some features on this boat, including all the scripting (like the East Cape logo on the side) are in the same font as the 'old school' skiff from the vimeo video. Baby blue in and out.

Definitely a sweet skiff but I'd damn sure want one of those folding steps/backrests to get up & down from that platform comfortably.

Actually believe it or not I think the picture is kind of deceiving because it doesn't give you a real reference of how narrow the beam is on the Caimen. It's not wide. I could pee across it.
