I forgot to ask after beating Uncharted 4... Is that spin off game (Lost Legacy) worth playing?

Yes, it's awesome. Shorter game but still a lot of fun and maintains the bones of what was built in Uncharted 4. Definitely worth it.

I forgot about that one. I am about to finish Last of Us 2 and then was going to start either Red Dead Redemption 2 or God of War (2018) which would be the first GOW game I've ever played.

Talk about can't go wrong either way. Both are great, Red Dead is just much longer. I'm still bitter that Rockstar hasn't released a 60 fps patch for current consoles.

I'm now playing Elden Ring for first time. Trying not to rage quit.

Everywhere I go; I die. And this is the "easy" souls game, supposedly.

That's why I can't play any of them. They are beautiful games but way too punishing for me. I tried Bloodborne got about 3 hours in and gave up. Then tried Dark Souls 3, spent an hour on the first boss whose name literally translates to tutorial boss or something like that. Couldn't beat him and resigned myself to watching people play those games.

I quit Bloodborne after 10 minutes. I'm not spending hours trying to figure out how to get past the very first creature in the game. Screw "dying is part of it."

I made some slow progress on ER tonight. Feeling slightly better about it now.

I can't stand souls type games, I game to chill not stress out and get frustrated. Same reason I dont like Madden, I get too angry when they drop a perfect pass.

I am really back into Helldivers 2. Such a fun game when you stumble into a squad that communicates and works together.

souls and elden ring games have ruined my enjoyment of other games now. All other RPGs just feel dumb.

At least there are a lot of soulslikes to go through and once you "get gud", they aren't really that hard and I'm honestly not even that good. Very enjoyable playstyle.

To each his own. The other souls games I've attempted were like a job to me. Too much damn work and rage. I'm retired and do t need the stress.

Elden Rings at least lets me go around killing lesser foes so I can build up to take on the bigger ones. Lesser foes are still hard though.

Finished KDC2. Great game.

Started Clair Obscure E33. Not 100% sure what to think yet. Its fantastic looking and sounding, and the story is interesting. Not sure where I'm at on turn-based combat yet.

Indeed. I know the genre is not for everyone. I've been trying to get my buddies to invest time into it but to no avail.

I think it is worth putting time into because the euphoria it generates after some bosses is the highest I've had and I've been gaming for 40 years.

It's nearly all the best parts of turn based combat that's ever existed. Unfortunately turn based isnt near as popular as it used to be, but for those of us who have waited so long the game is such a treat.

never really liked turn based jRPG combat but the dodge mechanic kept it mostly fresh.

Absolutely loved the game but surprisingly replayability was not good for me. Explored some after "beating the game". never managed to beat the uber boss though.

Lol! To each their own, I guess!

I find Soulsborne games to be very relaxing. But I find it hilarious that, after talking about a game being stressful, your go-to relaxing game is Helldivers 2. That **** is INCREDIBLY frustrating. And, as you mentioned, unless you get a good team, it's just not near as fun.

I can sit back and basically walk through Dark Souls 3, enjoying every second of it. Do I die? Sure, every once in a while. But I die so much more in Helldivers 2.

I will agree that the earlier games have god-awful runbacks. Demon Souls, Dark Souls, and Dark Souls 2 will frustrate me. But that is primarily due to the bad mechanics of those games. Bloodborne, DS3, Sekiro, and Elden Ring are all absolutely S-Tier games.

At the end of the day, "git gud", while it's used as a bit of an insult, is literally the solution here. Souls games require you to simply learn to play their style. Once it finally 'clicks', they are not hard games. They have a few really hard bosses, but all these bosses can be learned or easily defeated with certain builds. Also, if you don't understand all the stats and how they affect your damage and gameplay, it's very easy to waste many levels putting points into the wrong place.

The other big issue, I believe those who don't like these games face, is the lack of hand-holding. Gamers are used to being lazy. Unless the game literally pauses and throws up an explanation of something, gamers will just skip it. For example, Bloodborne has a section in the main hub with around 10 different hints on the ground that explain all the mechanics. An absolute necessary mechanic is the parry mechanic, in Bloodborne. If you are not parrying, you are making the game at least 2-3x harder. If you just glanced past that tool-tip and didn't actually read it and understand it, you will ALWAYS have issues with the game.

FromSoft, as a game development studio, simply doesn't care if gamers miss things. They will literally hide entire amazing optional sections of the game behind several secrets that you can easily miss. I love it.

ETA: I say all that as someone who loves these games and truly enjoys hearing about others finally picking them up and loving them, too. But, at the end of the day, it's a video game to be played for fun. If you are not having fun, then by all means, go play something that you enjoy.

ROFL! That's literally a scripted death like the Grafted Scion in Elden Ring!

You can easily avoid the scripted death by running past him or simply walking behind him, do a charged up R2 to stagger him, and then getting off a visceral attack into his ass. One-shotted.

As someone who puts Bloodborne as 1a, in my favorite games ranking (Elden Ring being 1b), old Yarnham is definitely hard for new players. I won't act like it isn't. It was hard as hell for me, the first time, and it can be disheartening for new players to simply get to the first shortcut. It's a maze to find and you just aren't good at this point in the game. I think Old Yarnham is definitely the hardest starting area in any Soulsborne game. There are only two lamps in all of Old Yarnham, and one of them is blocked by an optional boss battle. Until you get the shortcut, it can seem like an insurmountable challenge for new players.

But if you can somehow push through that, the lore and world of Bloodborne is so freaking amazing. I just adore that game.

Same. I started with Elden Ring and then proceeded to buy, play and beat every fromsoft souls game except Bloodbourne because xbox.

Plethora of soulslikes have kept me busy as well like Lies of P and surprisingly Remnant 2! At least I got my friends to play Remnant 2 but they played it strictly as a shooter so had a hard time.

I got sucked back into Death Stranding (original directors cut). I had sunk around 30 hours into it before getting distracted by other stuff... now I'm back and looking to finish it.

But man, I'm going so slow in this game. I'm WAY behind the pace people claim it takes to finish the main story. But, taking it all in, one step at a time, is sorta the whole point/theme of the game.

I'm oddly fascinated by it though... it's so weird but I'm enjoying the heck out of it!

I think I need my games story-driven these days, and definitely not "find a scrap of lore in the corner of the room". I play so infrequently now that I need to feel like some real progress is happening. Maybe progress-driven is what I mean to say.

Clair Obscur, oddly enough, is bad for this, because while the overall story is good, the story beats of importance are few and far between. There was about a week of sporadic playing where I went through a zone to find a lil creature, then another zone to find a village, then stuff in that village for a while, then off to a cave to find a goofy guy, then through a whole zone to find a rock. Not exactly "can't put the controller down" story content.

If you can play 8 hours a day then you'll barely remember what I'm talking about, but if you can only play 1 hour a day, you'll wonder how people call it next-level storytelling. It eventually gets there though.

I'm playing Xenoblade Chronicles X right now and it's more like an MMO than a JRPG, with most of the story found in side quests and companion missions. It's alright, but 35 hours in (over a month) I'm about ready for something more straightforward. Maybe Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance will be a nice change of pace.

I just don't have the patience for something that hard that is linear. The only reason I've stuck with Elden Ring so far is because I can at least travel around and level up before I fight a boss.

Felled my first boss today as well.

I quite enjoyed Dark Souls, but I had a lot more free time back then! Open world games are a bit overwhelming for me, so I have games I play pretty much every day or weekly with a smattering of newer games here and there (WoW, FFXIV, Civ 6, Rimworld) The newer games I play are either peon management type or story driven linear games. I guess maybe I'm realizing I just miss my old school JRPGs.

As I previously stated, I hate hard games. I don't see the point in it. But ER is forgiving because it at least gives you a path to level up and get stronger for the bigger bosses. It's still hard, but at least it has a back door, if you will.

What would y'all say was the point in life when you had the most game time? I have 2 time periods:

1. My 3rd year at A&M, I had to drop a class due to a crazy Korean prof that nobody could understand. I only had 11 hours that semester so I played my PS2 (Gran Turismo) every day for hours.

2. My mid/late 20's for around 3-4 years when our 2 girls were babies/toddlers. I would stay up till midnight every night to take the first shift of feeding/changing so I usually had 3-4 hours daily to game/watch movies while momma got her sleep. This was during the prime 360 & COD years so, yeah, good times!

It is definitely challenging but incredibly worth it. Such an amazing game.

Some helpful hints for a newbie (no spoilers)

  • FromSoft games have VERY LITTLE dialogue or tool tips. So anytime you meet an NPC, always talk to him/her and PAY ATTENTION to what they say. Elden Ring has many NPC questlines. However, basically all of them are optional and reward really cool weapons or equipment. On that note, be careful just attacking anything you see. If you happen to see a person who just looks different from normal enemies, try talking to them before attacking them.
  • All lore in the game can be found through NPC dialogue and Item descriptions. If you want to know more, read the item description of everything you pickup.
  • When talking to an NPC, ALWAYS keep talking to them until they repeat themselves. It's a FromSoft thing that NPC's will talk to you, then stop. You have to physically press the Talk button to keep talking to them, because they always have more to say. Keep doing this until they begin to repeat themselves.
  • EXPLORE THE STARTING AREAS. There are several S-Tier weapons to be found in the starting zones. Hell, I believe the best weapon in the game is literally a 2 minute ride from where you start. East Limgrave, West Limgrave, and the Weeping Peninsula are all low level zones, that you are capable of clearing from the start. There is literally 25 hours worth of content in these three zones, alone. As you then progress through the game, the zones get smaller and begin to level up. Use these areas to level up, learn the game, and play with different types of weapons.
  • Focus on a particular weapon type of style. Don't put all your stat points scattered aimlessly. You will be able to respec after the second story boss, but that could potentially be 30 hours in, depending on how much you spend exploring.
  • Vigor increases your overall HP. There's a "soft cap" of 40 Vigor and a harder cap at 60 Vigor. If a boss ever one-shots you, you are either underleveled or don't have enough investment into Vigor.
  • Mind is your overall FP (Focus Points). This is required to use magic abilities or to use weapon arts. If you are not playing a magic user, you really don't need much FP. A single FP Estus Flask is enough to support you using Weapon Arts.
  • Endurance increases your stamina and max weight load. You need enough stamina to get off a few attacks, without running out. FromSoft games are NOT games you can just sit there and get off 4-5 hits with a standard weapon without getting hit, yourself. Stamina regenerates rather quickly and can be increased with Talismans. Equip Load is actually the more important thing. There are three Equip loads in Elden Ring: Light, Medium, and Heavy. You can look up the percentages, but you always want to aim for Medium. Light is fine, if you like very fast builds, but your defense will suffer. However, Light allows you a greater roll distance when dodging. Medium is the standard. If you ever get to Heavy equip load, you will begin "fat-rolling". Basically, do not do this as a newbie. You will die a lot.
  • Strength, Dexterity, Intelligence, Faith, Arcane: These are your damage/build stats. You should only be putting points into the stats required for your build. How do you know? Look at the stats for the weapon you want to wield. There is a section for every weapon regarding "Scaling" and "Requirements". Requirements are the required Stats to simply use the weapon. Scaling tells you where to put most of your points in. For example, if a sword you really like has a Strength Scaling of B and a Dexterity Scaling of C, then you want to focus more on Strength, because it scales your damage better.
  • DO NOT focus on Scaling too much in the early game. You get much more damage boosts from improving the quality of your weapons. Scaling is more of a mid to late game thing. Early game you should focus on Vigor, Endurance, and get the "Requirement" level stat for whichever weapon you want to wield. If you do not meet the stat requirements, your damage is basically nothing with that weapon.
  • Learn to dodge, early on. The core mechanic to most FromSoft games exists around timing your rolls and then attacking in between the enemy's attacks. When you roll, there are a certain number of "I-Frames" or Invincibility Frames your character goes through. During this time, 95% of all attacks in the game will not hit you. This is the "dance" that new FromSoft players have to learn. There is a learning curve to it, but once you get it, the game because so much easier.
  • Status Effects are OP. If you are a newbie, I HIGHLY recommend a build using a Bleed weapon. Bleed is a status effect that builds up an invisible bar for every enemy, every time you hit them. Once that bar fills, they are immediately ruptured for 10% of their total HP. Massive damage output, there. Then the bleed bar restarts.
I could literally list out so many more helpful hints. However, if you start playing and have questions, please create a new thread and I'm sure I'm not the only one who would be excited to answer them and help you out.

At the end of the day, just enjoy this great game. There are many "Gatekeepers" in the FromSoft fandom who like to shame new players for using certain mechanics. Ignore all that bull***** If you want to use Summons for boss fights, then do it. Whatever allows you to enjoy the game, just do it.

Hope you enjoy it!

Though it's an "open world" game, it is NOT a Ubisoft open world game. So, when you pull up the map, you don't have a million markers of stuff you have to go do or find. It's much more based around exploration and just coming across really cool things.
