What? Absolutely no pressure on Dak. He's gonna make over 30 million and will be set for life.

A bidding war for him would double what the Cowboys want to pay now, especially with the Mahomes money.

Cowboys really should nail him down now.
Not if he gets injured during this tag year, as was stated up there. Not likely, but possible.

I get not having a deal in place, but not even having plans to talk about it today? This whole thing is so stupid.

Yeah it seems odd. Maybe from the Cowboys side they figured Dak wasn't going to budge on the contract length. We keep hearing he wanted a 4 year deal and they offered 5 years. So if you wait a year agree on 4 and get it done. Meanwhile, other that this just being a distraction.. it's not terrible to have your QB locked up for essentially 2 years. He'll cost $31 million this year and $38 million next on the tag. That's probably not much different then what years 1 and 2 of a 4 year deal would have been.

I hope they run him 12 times a game.

he's doing what he thinks is best for himself, just like any one of us would do in negotiations with our employer.

I'm a few hours away from being dead wrong on this one. Didn't think Jerry had the balls. Now if only he had started playing hardball with all the luxury position players 3 years ago and not started with the single most important position on the field.

I really don't care if we sign Dak or not. McCarthy is going to find someone else to play QB in the next 2yrs, imo.

I wanted Dak locked up but it's not a terrible idea to let him continue on 1 year deals. If there was any doubt about his ability then by 2022 there should be none. We will know who this guy is. If he's great then he'll break the bank and he'll deserve it.

Worst case scenario would be like last year. Throw for 5000 yards and go 8-8.

Not the worst thing ever to see how he functions in McCarthy's offense + figure out the covid cap landscape

I don't get the quibbling from fans over Dak. If you look at his numbers and W/L record he's worth locking up. We were 8-8 last season, but that wasn't Dak's fault. Look at his numbers. One of the best game of his career was against Minnesota, and on the two most important play of the game our offensive brain trust took the ball out of his hands and Zeke got stuffed two plays in a row. He has managed to win the NFC East twice with a robot for a head coach.

Also, he'll take the tag this year, but next year he could hold out.

Dak was 1-6 against playoff teams with a QB rating in the low 80s. With the season on the line against a iggles team with guys off the street starting in their secondary, Dak gagged. He's not worth the $35 million a year he was offered. Next season stick him with the lower franchise tag, take the two number ones and move on.

I can't argue that he had some stinkers last year, but you've already seen what he has done in previous seasons, even with a lameass coach like Garrett.

Who the hell do you expect to have at quarterback if you let him go for draft picks? And that's if anyone is willing to sign him for big money while also giving up picks?
dc509
How long do you want to ignore this user?

Exactly. If this were a conversation about replacing him with Pat Mahomes then ok, but that's not what is going to happen. We're not going to have a chance at Trevor Lawrence either. The fact that I think Dak can win a Super Bowl aside, you have to be realistic.

Definitely a gamble to possibly let him walk after this season. He may have his limitations but hes also never had a losing season and beat Wilson in the playoffs. QB is such a gamble, never know how those guys are gonna turn out.

The thing we need to focus on is Dak's attitude as a tagged player. So far, all signs are he's being a real professional. Since signing the tag I've heard no comments of disappointment, feeling disrespected, etc. He's ready to be QB1 for this team once again.

If he's OK with it then so am I. He'll make $30+ million this year on the tag and we can have these conversations next year.

If Dak has a good year he won't walk. Jerry will give him whatever it takes.

It could get real interesting if the team doesn't have a great year and/or McCarthy clearly doesn't jive with Dak.

Next offseason you could have Dak, Jameis and Cam all available at the same time. Not to mention Dalton and Fitz.
Agristotle

.....and I agree with you that a lot of the problem was Garrett.

Still, you can't pay Dak like he's a difference maker when he's not. He had a good oline, good receivers, and a great rb but couldn't produce when it mattered. If $35 million a year and $100 million guaranteed, plus oceans of endorsement money isn't enough, he doesn't want to be in Dallas, so time for both parties to move on. You get the two number ones, give Dalton the keys to the Ferrari, and draft a QB. Then spend all that Dak money on football players, not a big game choker.

I feel like this isn't horrible. We get a year to see how McCarthy likes dak as his qb before getting married to him. To me this is jerry betting on McCarthy rather than dak

if dak has a great year next year, and someone else offers him big $$, is he allowed to take it? are teams allowed to offer?

I hope dak walks if he has a great year. Spending 90M on elliott and 100m on cooper, smh. I guess Jerry dosent remember the anthony wright, drew henson, chad hutchison, quincy carter era anymore

Its not horrible yet. But we are halfway to a Danny Snyder and that is not good. I'm not sure its really Jerry betting on Mike Mac over Dakota, since dallas was happy to pay big money for 5 yrs but not 4 yrs.

If he has a great year no way they let him walk. Worst case scenario is he is franchised again. Jerry's history says they will give him the farm to keep him if needed.

I really do think a lot of this has to do with the state of the league right now, i.e. Corona and all that.

Not if they franchise tag him. They can franchise him again but have to give him a 20% raise. So the $31 he'll make under the tag this year would go to $37ish.

I believe a player can be tagged 3 times, although no one ever makes it to the 3rd one since each subsequent tag requires a 20% raise.

Reports are the Cowboys offered 33-35m per year. About 110m in guaranteed money.

Just now Jane Slater reporting that Dak decided at the last minute he wanted to sign that deal but it was too late to get the paperwork in.

I don't buy it. He's had months to turn the paperwork in. If the Cowboys threw the offer out so late he didn't have time to sign the paperwork then that is a colossal failure by the organization.

The cowboys have had 5 years 172 with over 100 guaranteed on the table for a long time. The issue has been that Dak wants 4. If he decided he would take the 5 but waited too long, that's on him

I dont fault the Cowboys one bit for this. They've signed several guys recently to deals either slightly lower than the max market (i.e. Cooper, Lawrence, Collins). Or they've done deals that are extensions adding a lot of years (i.e. Smith and Zeke) This enables a huge amount of cap flexibility. They also finally set a precedent letting guys like Beasly and Jones walk for big money deals.

Dak seemingly allowed neither. Of course we dont know exactly what he wanted but I think its certain that he's getting quite a bit less this year vs. If he would have signed. He also passed up a huge check upon signing.
