I'm pretty sure the issue is the Cowboys want a 5 or 6 year deal and Dak's people want a 3 year.

I have a hard time believing that Dak is looking at a contract at 36ish AAV for 5-6 years with the appropriate guarantees and is rejecting it for a 3 year deal.

The cowboys might be forced into a situation where they have to tag cooper in order to keep him.

It's not that hard to believe. The QB numbers will go nowhere but up. 3 years from now he could be looking at 42m a year especially if he leads the team to success.

It takes two to tango. Pretty sure they offered him 30... which many on here said was crazy money at the time. Dak & his agent bet on themselves and the market and turned it down. Since then Dak was 2nd in the league in passing yards (no Pro Bowl though) and Mahomes has guaranteed himself the richest contract in NFL history which will raise the bar for all current & future QB contracts.

Dak and agent win. We don't know all the exact details, but it doesn't look like the Cowboys messed it up... they made a fair offer and the other side played hard ball. Can't even fault Dak's team really, they made a gutsy move (that could have backfired) and it looks like it's going to get him a couple more million per year at least.

There was a rumor last summer that Dak turned down 30 million per year, because he wanted 40 million per year. If that's true, the Cowboys will have to pay that to keep him. They have no leverage anymore aside from the franchise tag, and I'm sure some desperate team would pay 40 per year for a free agent Dak

If Dak wants to bleed them dry to the detriment around him, so be it. Here's your $35-40 and 3 years Dak But sorry, Amare is now gone. So is Cobb

I still don't see it. I think the deal gets done at the right AAV/guaranteed dollars. If the front office is saying it's "Top 5", then it's not better than Russell Wilsons.

The Cowboys problem is that Maholmes will push it from 36-37 above 40.

Downgrade at QB is terrible idea.

Dak will be QB of cowboys next year, as he should be. There aren't any other options being considered so not worth even discussing

40 million a year is not worth it without weapons.

SF about to win SB #6. Patriots have 6. Steelers have 6.

Meanwhile the Cowboys haven't even been to a championship game in 25 years.

Have the 49ers had 3 trips to the Superbowl and 3 rebuilding periods since the Cowboys last Superbowl?

This is their second trip since the Poke were in Super Bowl XXX.

See that Dak! That's what you're suppose to do and then ask for your $40 million/ year

The team has got a lot of guys getting paid huge money without ever having accomplished much of anything. I do think that may be one of their issues.

McCarthy reminds me a lot of Andy Reid. I don't think Jerry has 6 years of waiting. Does Andy win this without Mahomes? I doubt it. Is Dak equal to Mahomes? I doubt it. If Dak wants 40 million and won't accept franchise, we gotta move on. He's mediocre without offensive weapons. Our OL has no depth. Our defense is average at best. We spent a ton on Zeke for JG. If we do the same for Dak, we're leaving little cash for the defense and OL depth.
I think McCarthy has to make the call on Dak if he expects 40 mil and turns down franchise. If nothing else, we go after another Tannehill type guy and make McCarthy earn it. I just think if we give Dak a long term deal and don't leave anything, we're putting ourselves in a long term risk.

If he has no weapons, that's the front office fault.

every front office has the salary cap to deal with. Cowboys are in a rough spot.

And nothing you posted changes the truth of what I posted.

The idea he won't have weapons is baseless.

do you think he deserves to be paid the same as mahomes? Do you think he deserves 40 mil if that means we can't keep cooper?
BMX Bandit
How long do you want to ignore this user?
He does not deserve to get more than Mahomes. I don't think he will get 40.

But if he does, that will not be the reason the Cowboys cannot also keep Cooper around.

I'd rather overpay tanny at $25 mil, keep cooper, and use the rest where needed (te, def, etc).
Jerry should take a note from the patriots and Steelers. It's a business. The pats are willing to let brady walk after winning 6 super bowl rings. The Steelers let bell walk. We're going to wind up with 4 more years of hell, blame McCarthy, and hiring JG back after he wins a super bowl with the Giants. Jerry will probably die the year after and then JG will go on a run of 5 consecutive Super Bowls.

One is 100 and the other was a RB with very little tread left on the tires. Not the same.

Cooper was a very average WR before he got to Dallas. Jeckyl and Hyde and a ton of drops. The question is whether Dak is making Cooper or Cooper making Dak. I'd put my money on Dak and find cheaper weapons to put around him, but that's me. But you could make a case for either.

I think keeping both, along with Zeke, will completely hamstring the rest of the roster.

2015: 72/1070/6
2016: 83/1153/5

2018: 94/1289/10 (extrapolate 9 game averages to 16 games)
2019: 79/1189/8

If was a "very average" receiver then, then hes a very average receiver now.

He had a big upswing in TDs in 2018, but otherwise he has been what he was his first two years.

If it's me then I'm paying Dak and Cooper. We've seen Dak with bargain basement receivers, and it isn't pretty. Cooper turned around the entire offense when he showed up. Cooper got a nagging injury halfway through this season and the offense took a major step back. He's a key component and makes a huge difference when healthy.

The most frustrating thing about this is still Zeke's deal. If you let Zeke walk, then you have plenty of money to pay Dak and Cooper without stretching things too much. Now it's basically pick two of Dak, Cooper, and defense/depth. And that's pretty much a no-win situation

Half his 2016 yards came in 4 games. Half his yards last year came in 4 games. And 2017 was conveniently left out when he had his worst year in the league.

His 9 game stretch right after he was traded was incredible but it was the first time he showed any level of consistency.

The most frustrating part of it is I think you have to keep him to justify trading a first rounder and take what you can get.

2017 was a bad year, but not sure what that has to do with the point.

He hasn't really significantly improved since his first two years. if you consider him "very average" then, thats what he is now.

The main thing that is stalling these Dak negotiations is how much $ is guaranteed on the contract. If you look at Goff's contract, 110 of the $134M is guaranteed, which is a little over 82%. Dak deserves a bigger contract than that, I believe. However, would you rather give him a high 30's with less guaranteed or mid 30's with higher guaranteed. Which of these 2 would you feel most comfortable with?

A). 6 year $210M w/ 170 guaranteed. (35M/yr, 81% G)

B). 6 year $231M w/ 140M guaranteed. (38.5M/yr, 60% G)
  • This would essentially be a 4 year contract and will allow you to move money around to clear cap space when needed.

I don't think your guaranteed dollars are jumping from 110 to 140 for Dak.
