Maybe this is a better way to put it. Right now security cameras on houses/businesses are there for a reason, to protect that property. Your phone tracks you so GPS works and calls are routed to the right towers. With these things the surveillance use is secondary to the main use. Flock is surveillance for the purpose of surveillance.

My guess is he was of a protected group and there was no arrest or prosecution.

If you had the license plate, they could have tracked him down without flock pretty easily.

What the officer did was illegal. They have been arrested and charged with a felony.

Are we now actually arguing that technology is bad because some people get convicted of criminally abusing that tech? REALLY?! Should we ban personal computers because some people hack those computers to steal your information?

Also, authorities don't need a warrant to obtain traffic cam footage and external security footage of public areas. They also don't need a warrant to obtain Ring footage in certain situations.

Of course they're different, nobody has said otherwise. That really has no bearing on the discussion at all. The claim is they are uniquely bad with respect to state surveillance. I'm simply saying that's an unfounded claim that doesn't hold up to close scrutiny.

Actually several people have asserted that there's no difference.

And it's very much founded and close scrutiny absolutely shows that. If they recorded plates alone and were not in an AI searchable database could "could" make your argument, but it would still be specious. As they are currently configured no thinking person could conclude that they are not invasive. Depending upon one's societal outlook, one could accept that invasiveness. I do not.

"Cops don't need warrants for security cameras in public areas"…really? If it is on my building facing a public area they can ask and get my permission or get a warrant. Same with ring doorbells.

Can't speak for central Montgomery County. East is nearly Flock free except for Riverwalk, Cumberland A.V. Bull Park, Home Depot and 99 going East. 6 cameras all together. Not to bad.

Kinda what I imagined. A lot of people wagging their fingers from their exclusively all white suburban neighborhoods. If the wrong sort were to get close the flock cameras would be lining every street.
