The site is not meant to be a database of every time a Flock camera captures a license plate. It is meant to show how many times someone (such as a law officer *cough or hacker *cough) does a SEARCH for that particular license plate. So unless your plate numbers belong to stolen vehicles or people who committed crimes, they probably won't come up on a search.

This, and it also means law enforcement doesn't have to do the hard work necessary. Let's all just watch everyone on our monitors from the cloud. I saw a video on youtube yesterday from an outfit called T REX Labs. Highly recommend searching for it, and watching. Never realized the full potential of what this could lead to. And before anyone suggests that I hate law enforcement, let me assure you that is not the case.

There is nothing for the police or the city to extract from that individual. Even if they do arrest him, he doesn't care. He'll be out on cashless bond in a couple of days to do it again. He has no prestige in society. All he has is what he stole from you.
But you and I have petty of resources to take from. These will be used to enforce minor civil things because you and I have the means to pay for them. We will also have the motivation to pay for them to not lose our place in society.
That's just one of many reasons why these are so much bull***** We allow criminals to live their life unfettered but those of us who pay taxes, have insurances, have homes, and contribute to society are going to be forced to pay more of our "fair share" to support all of the leeches we have in society

No, this was close to 25 years ago. Wasn't really thinking about such things back then.
She also had her Jeep broken into when the perps simply cut through her doors and stole her radio and change out of her console. Cops told me on that one to just always leave your windows off/down in Jeeps and let the perps take what they want. Nothing they are going to or can do about it.
Both of these happened within about a year of moving to Dallas. Fun big city lessons to learn.

I applaud the City of Austin officially ended its contract with Flock Safety for automated license plate reader (LPR) cameras due to privacy concerns. This is one of the rare issues that I agree with Austin leaders.

The county north of me just canceled the Flock contracts. Something like 30 cameras will come down by year end. Our county will follow suit most likely.
It's funny because over on the Big Bend thread, there is almost universal support for using cameras, license plate readers and drones to track the movement of US citizens and anyone else who may be inside the national park at all times...in a place with virtually zero crime.
But on this thread, there is pretty much universal dislike for using cameras, license plate readers, etc. in some of the most violent cities in the US.
Not saying I have the solution, but not sure I understand the disconnect....

And do NOT accuse me of NIMBYism since I don't live near the border, "so those cameras don't affect me." I used to live near the border and have regularly passed through the internal border checkpoints. I understand their mission and the need. There was a time when I was younger that I was inclined to be snippy and "nunyabidness" at those locations. But the border must be secured and defended at necessary cost. The entrance to my neighborhood, the Home Depot parking lot, the exit off I45 are not national security concerns that require 24/7 AI curated and nationally searchable surveillance.

The Dallas cops are still a big part of the problem. They are almost universally lazy *******s on a power trip.
I think that technology to secure the border is definitely the way to go. Way more effective than many other forms.
Just pointing out that the same tech (to some extent) is being used, the same types of people will be recorded (probably 99.9% US citizens) and one area has almost zero crime (the national park) while the other is tremendously dangerous (the city).

My liberal friends are pro-Flock. We've been arguing for weeks about them. I passed by a huge bus station in Houston the other day and noticed there was one right down the block facing the entrance. These are the buses that go to/from Mexico. I messaged the group and asked if they still supported flock cameras when being used to track illegal immigrants. No replies.

My first thought was the road to hell is paved with good intentions.
And it's not the tech's fault; it's the fact that it's in the hands of the cities and law enforcement, so people.
And people, from cops to the mayors, etc. are just as fallible as anyone.
Since there's no way to make sure this type of tech isn't used improperly - and no, "Well, we're limiting how long data can be stored is NOT ensuring the tech still isn't being used for improper reasons - it shouldn't be used AT ALL.
I loved seeing that 50 cities ended their contracts with Flock. It needs to be ALL cities, at least until true guardrails can be placed to ensure an idiot cop CAN'T use it to track his ex, or whatever.
Also, making sure the cameras don't get innocent people pulled over for theft because the camera read the license plate number wrong also needs to be fixed.
