It's that simple…

Yes. Cut spending somewhere to finance it. Should be simple enough, or is DOGE just a shell game? What's the point of it if it isn't going to cut spending?

And that's what you then want Congress to do in March with the new budget…

Hell, they can coordinate lock-step with DOGE and the White House to make it happen…

This is a "chicken and the egg" conundrum on steroids…

The FACT is that no matter what they do, the debt limit will be in place. The FACT is that Trump and Democrats want it gone so they have no fiscal roadbumps for insane spending. There is no dishonesty in that tweet. There is only attempted cover for fiscal irresponsibility from the apologists here.

The border/immigration will never be "fixed". Whatever Trump does is a stop gap. He can do that regardless of what happens with this CR. Those are mutually exclusive.

Pretty much. He'll get a tax cut extension. That's pretty much it is my guess. He received less than half of the total votes and lost a house seat. There is no mandate. There will not be sweeping spending cuts.

To get sweeping spending cuts, there needs to be structural reforms. Nobody is talking about that or campaigning on that .

You're failing to see that this IS the status quo. You voted for a fiscal liberal, and that, along with the social liberalism of the left, has gotten us into a bad spot economically. It cannot be fixed by financing it with more debt. You are falling for the trap of the big government "fix", that all they need to do is just have a little more money (what's a few Trillion between friends).

No. Just No.

And all of that is fine as long as you accept that it handcuffs the Trump agenda to fix the things (like immigration) that he was elected to fix…

You can't have it both ways…

Now, if you say you are only for fixing the border/immigration "as long as" it doesn't increase the debt, then that is a fair thing to say…that needs to be your stance…

It's ideological, and not realistic, but if that's your stance, then it is at least honest…

I don't buy your argument to begin with.

That said, my foundation is much more in line with massie than maga on this matter. If you want to pass a CR, then pass a CR. Don't attach other items to it.

If you want to increase the debt limit, then write a bill to do so.

If you want to [insert whatever pet issue you campaigned on] then go through the legislative process to implement it.

Don't pile on ****ty pork projects or more meaningful policy changes on the back of necessary bills intended to do one thing. That is the **** that leads to our demise. If trumps agenda requires such a maneuver, he's ****ed to begin with. This doesn't matter that much.

I'll say this again. There is no debt ceiling when we blow right past it every single time with yet more spending.

It's a facade that only serves for getting R's to capitulate to D's on spending because it's actually a government shutdown issue. Nothing to do with debt in reality.

Why? Because neither party is ever going to cut spending. Ever.

So Trump simply wants it removed because it's one less thing that D's can hold over the R's head.

Trump is recognizing that reality and just wants it out of the way so he can work his agenda.

That's all this. Once you accept that spending is not getting cut then you can see this for what it is.

Yep. This is right on. Without legislation passed via congress, whatever trump does is temporary.

Reintroducing remain in Mexico shouldn't be all that expensive. Then pass a budget to throw money at deportations or whatever structure you need to secure the border.

Don't come in here and essentially claim trumps a king and gets to dictate bad policy to congress because it's his agenda and he won't be able to implement it without massive increases in spending.

Exactly. Trump is way off his rocker wanting the debt ceiling increased by a ridiculous amount.

We don't even need a clean CR. We need cuts and a clean CR is still a huge negative overall. But that requires our politicians to have a spine and actually care about fiscal responsibility which is a near impossible ask these days.

Cmon you're better than taking a cheap shot like that.

Presidents get 1, if they're lucky 2 of their major initiatives. 98% of the crap they campaign on isn't happening. Even if they have control. See Obama 2009-2010, Trump 2017-2018, and Biden 2021-2022. More then 2 major initiatives requires bipartisan support. That just isn't going to happen. Therefore tax cuts I think is likely. Everything else is going to be unlikely to tough. DeSantis would have had the same constraints.

Give up the farm as in give the democrats most of the things they want.

If the debt ceiling is a nothing burger, then why must it be included? Deal with it separately

I'm well aware of the charade that is the debt ceiling fight, how stupid a tool it is that most politicians simply ignore.

I don't disagree, but when we suspended it the last time, the Dems agreed to a 1% reduction in spending if they failed to pass the future CRs. That was the compromise with the Rs. However, the cuts never happened because Johnson folded each time.

To get a suspension by the Dems, you will have to give them something, most likely a spending increase.

I don't think you get it. The amount that is spent is a bigger issue. You think the problems are immigration and who is in charge of spending the money? Those are childs play compared to what an 8 Trillion dollar budget does to government overreach and corruption. The issues you want Trump to deal with are emergent properties of an out of control federal government - they are just symptoms of the problem, not stand alone issues. You are trying to give ibuprofen to a diabetic instead of cutting off the sugar.

Let's reset:

CR1- a bill put together behind the scenes between johnson, Schumer, Jeffries, and other congressional leaders. The bill was 1500 pages long and given to congress right before a holiday break which coincides with an expiration in funding. This was done in an attempt to pressure lawmakers to get it passed without really having the time to review it.

The bill included extending the debt ceiling for 2 years

Details started to leak about the crazy **** in it and botj incoming and current Republicans balked killing the bill before it could go anywhere

CR2- Johnson, presumably with heavy input from trumps team, introduced a second version on the bill. Much shorter and removing many, if not all, of the democrats wants. It kept the debt ceiling extention, but also kept 5 trillion dollars worth of spending. Nearly every democrat rejected it because it got rid of their goodies and 33 or so Republicans rejected it, each for their own reasons, but mostly because of the high spending.

Maga is now going after the Republicans who voted no because they dared to stand against Trump. They claim that his agenda will be imperiled from day 1 without extending the debt ceiling for 2 years.

Is that about right?
