It's the classic scene from the comics when Superman opens up a gate by a tree!

I'm sure it's just these imperfect pictures but Superman actually looks fat to me. It's almost like he bulked up too much and then the suit doesn't highlight his physique in the right way.

#nohomo
I was going to say that he's kind of got a George Reeves physique moreso than any of the more recent actors who've played Superman.

Mister Terrific looks pretty good, though I don't think the T mask translates really well to live action, at least based on these early views. For sure love the character.

I'll alway prefer the Cavill suit - it's just more my style/aesthetic - and I don't think I'll ever get used to the collar on this one (I really, really hate it). Also, the concept alone of wearing red underwear on top of pants will never not be ridiculous to me. That said, I have to admit this is pretty cool...

Now that we're getting a better look at it, I'm afraid my 1940s theory just went out the window. The suit doesn't look so much retro/mid-century as it does "James Gunn-esque." Or, rather, like a modern animated Superman show brought to life? I don't quite know how to describe it, but it's certainly a very particular vibe that is going to completely depend on what the rest of the world looks/feels like. Personally, I'm not a huge fan, but I can see it working in, like, a super fun version, where everything is a bit heightened and vibrant. We shall see...

It looks absolutely ******ed. It looks like what a 1940s person would have drawn as a 2020 version. The stupid raised lines and odd padding ruin the whole thing.

I hear you. Personally, I want to see it on film, in context, before I make any "final" judgments.

I had the same thought, because it MUST look better on film. It is baggy in those photos in the arms and other areas and that mixed with the odd design choices are just ass. Also dudes hair looks like a just for men commercial. If I was the studio I sure wouldn't want THOSE being the first look for my new superman movie. I would want them to be more controlled. But this IS the studio that put out those stupid putting on his boots photos.

I really have high hopes with James Gunn in charge. He has earned the benefit of the doubt with me. But I have to admit, I am not digging the suit. I hope by the end of the movie this one will be in tatters and he'll have a new one.

Why do you think we're all seeing this?

I'm waffling back to my 1940s theory again, if only because I can't get over the material Gunn & co somehow chose for this suit. It just looks so baggy, bunchy, thick, and almost... denim-ish? I can't image why else they would actively choose this look, but who knows...

Lois goes to an open mic night and does an ad-libbed series of jokes making fun of Superman's baggy costume and underwear on the outside leading to a Super make over to a light blue costume with matching hat and bag.

Man of Steel? Whoever gave him that nickname has never gone home with him after a few whiskey neats

The more I see of this suit the worse it gets.

Goodness, this is an all-time horrific decision where superhero suits are concerned. Surely your theory is close because I can't even get past this right now.

It's always a double-edged sword with comic book super-fans like James Gunn. On one hand, it seems everyone, myself included, is confident he's going to deliver a fun, entertaining, heartfelt movie, one that truly nails the spirit of the character. And that's probably all that really matters in the end. But guys like him can also be slaves to comic book tradition, and design-wise there's this whole rabid fanbase out there who really, really want red trunks, a big yellow belt, a super bright suit, etc, for no other reason than that stuff is part of the character's history/heritage. And on one hand I get it, but also, trying to make that stuff look modern just straight up doesn't work. Yet Gunn still forced it because he's one of those rabid super-fans and now here we are. That, and as much as I love his movies, and him as a person, I've never really jived with his sense of design. There's a cheap, generic, MCU look that he's brought over from that franchise, it seems, between the crappy material and busy/unnecessary lines. I guess I was hoping he'd mold *to* the DC universe in that regard, instead of the other way around. That said, again, I'm waiting to see if it looks better on film (or by some miracle the character really is from the '40s), but I'm not holding my breath.

I'll wait til I see it on screen, but the suit and lines are definitely straight out of GOTG

Exactly. It's crazy how similar the vibes are. And those look fine for those movies, but that… is not Superman.

Looking back through images of previous Superman suits, it seems the red shorts are rather consistent. In terms of TV/movies, the Man of Steel suit looks like it was first to ditch those apparently awful red shorts. Was there any issue with the suit back in 2006 when we got Brandon Routh in Superman Returns? I recall some discussion about Henry Cavill's suit, perhaps centered around the look of the S on his chest. I always thought that rendering had a more alien look to it.

As for the lines, meh. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt here until I see this on screen opening day next summer.

Has there ever been a superhero suit that makes the actor look more flabby than this one? David corensweat took all that gear to bulk just to look like a lump of clay.

Cavill's was the best suit and it was alien looking on purpose simply because we got so much backstory from actual Krypton and that being their house insignia.

I would still pay anything for a Russell Crowe / Michael Shannon Krypton prequel. That was such a visionary opening.

Other than Luthor as the villain, is there any indication of the movie plot? Because this many superheroes in one movie would suggest an opponent/plan much larger than what Luthor is more famous for in most Superman media.

Some are speculating that a handful of superheroes (minus the hero part) are working for Luther against Superman, but no one knows for sure. I don't know much about them, but The Authority are introduced in this movie, and will be getting their own movie after this, so maybe they start out bad then turn good?

Regardless, it's kind of amazing how little has leaked about this movie. Heck, they've been filming since March and these are the first real set pics we've seen. Gunn has this thing locked down.

So you're saying that Superman fights Authority, and Authority always wins?
