Ha, do we really have to have this conversation every single time I post reactions?

Once again, for the cheap seats… A) I always caveat reactions/provide context, and B) no matter how hyperbolical, useful info can always be gleaned…

  • If from a premiere or studio-conducted event screening (which these reactions are), there usually aren't as many critics in attendance, while fans/influencers often get caught up in the hoopla, etc. so more hyperbole is to be expected.
  • If from a standard critic screening, the language, though still flowery (these are writers, after all) and sometimes cliched, will often sound less hyperbolical and more genuine.
  • If most reactions are only talking about certain aspects of the film (a lone performance, specific scenes, etc), the movie either sucks, is divisive, or average/decent at best, and the people posting the reactions are either trying to be nice or are trying to make sure they're invited to the next premiere/event.
  • Even if overly hyperbolical (like these tweets are), if the overwhelming majority are positive, and are talking about the movie as a whole (like these are), the movie is almost assuredly good. It's very rare that we see this level of consistent praise and the movie ends up sucking. Someone mentioned Napoleon earlier, and yes, while there were certainly positive reactions, some over-the-top, there were plenty of negative ones as well, many of which I also posted.

All of that said, way more of the reactions I post speak their mind and are more honest than you guys give them credit for. That, and again, I post plenty of negative reactions when negative reactions are available. Take Joker: Folie a Deux, for instance. If bots were being used, critics were being payed off, or it was all just "click bait," wouldn't we have seen some evidence of that over the past few weeks? Instead, I could hardly find positive reactions to post, and most everyone was brutally honest. Or, say, something like Alien: Romulus. There were tons of ridiculous, over-the-top reactions, and a number of negatives as well - I posted them all - and yet damn near everyone here still ended up liking the movie.

Long story short, reading the tea leaves... Gladiator II is almost assuredly a good if not great movie. Granted, like I said earlier, starting tomorrow night, reactions from more traditional critics will likely be less effusive, but probably not by much. We shall see...

More critics beginning weigh in (though Steven and Erik are more host/personality-types, and rarely have a negative thing to say about anything), and the basic gist seems to be "good, but not as good as the original," which at this point is about as good as can be expected.

Anyone know if the music/score is going to be the same (sorry I don't know the right terminology)?

Because Gladiator bounces around in my head at only a level of GOT, SW, and maybe Indiana Jones does. It's perfect.

Hans Zimmerman is not returning, but taking his place is Harry Gregson-Williams, who has worked closely with Zimmer since the '90s. Apparently it's a new score, but reminiscent of the old one, to the point of utilizing certain cues/themes from the original in key moments.

I have hopes for Gladiator 2, if only because I love the original and Id always rather a movie be great than bad.

We need someone to audit all of the movie threads from the last few years, and see how many turned out to just be godawful.

(disclaimer: I dont generally read any of the tweets in these threads because I know I'm not the intended audience. I just happened to read 4-5 of them this time and posted what I thought they read like.
I can't speak for anyone else replying to you, but I think its also ok for people to post the tweets are silly if its ok to post the tweets in the first place. It is a message forum, after all)

Everyone would take this outcome in a heartbeat when we heard it was being made.
also, whats up with this movie releasing internationally a week before stateside? I feel like this is the 2nd or 3rd movie this year to do this.

I have no issue with posters thinking the tweets are silly. Heck, *I* think half the tweets are silly. It's more the people who think the reactions are coming from bots, or that they're all somehow paid off by the studios, etc. I get being dubious, but it just gets old when it turns conspiratorial every single time, especially after I've explained the context a million times. Or, just because, over the past fifteen years or so, two or three times reactions turned out to be dead wrong, certain posters now assume *all* reactions are dead wrong now, and have to let us know about it. Yes, some turn out to be not quite as good as hyped, but they're almost never dead wrong, and like I said, there's always good info to glean regardless.

I guess it's just that we've been doing this for so long, I don't know why we have to have the same conversations over and over and over again, every single time reactions are posted, when we all know the game. We get it.

I think I said it was weird & bot-like that multiple reactions to Denzel's performance referenced food. I didn't think they actually came from bots, fwiw.

It was simply a reaction that made me laugh, and didn't remotely register in my mind as a spoiler, seeing as it had nothing to do with the plot. It was just a tiny little thing that happens that sounded crazy/cool. But whatever. I deleted the tweet.

Here's my Twitter first look template for all movies going forward.

FILM NAME is an absolute (superlative noun). (Director Name) proves he is still the master of (genre) and (veteran actor) proves he/she still has plenty of gas let in the tank. Fans of (hot show on Netflix) already know all about (young actor/actress), but the rest of the world is about to fall in love with their performance. It may not soar like the first (original movie that you really hoped they wouldn't make a sequel to) but it has so many good beats, you'll still want to stand up and cheer! Meanwhile, (actor everyone always likes, making this the least original Tweet ever) is having a blast in a command performance that rivals their turn in (movie they were really good in before starting to just cash checks). Go ahead and start writing the Oscar acceptance speech!

I remember when Indiana Jones 4 and 5 came out - finally a move that the entire family from teenagers to grandpa could go to a movie and have fun

4 was awful and 5 was good enough to enjoy

Is Gladiator 2 going to deliver for everyone to enjoy?

PS -Top Gun 2 set the bar that can never be topped by everyone of all ages loving it

I got out of Juror #2 tonight at the big, flagship AMC in Century City, and right outside our theater door there was a professional crew with lighting and everything, shooting exit reactions from a Gladiator II screening. The guy they were interviewing was RAVING about the movie, but then when he finished the director guy goes, "Okay, now say that last line again, but like...," and proceeded to instruct him just how effusive to be. It was pretty funny, and immediately made me think of this board and all the conspiracy theories whenever I post effusive Twitter reactions. The fix is indeed in!

(Seriously, though, this seemed like some kind of super-produced/official thing, but who knows.)

No, the conspiracy theory that some of them are paid or work for the studios. We all know some of them give positive reviews in exchange for access, but they're few and far between and I usually label them when I post them.

Don't forget how the boys got R.J. Spencer, played by Rainn Wilson, to write a good review of Vinnie Chase's "Aquaman" in "Entourage."

Payola of a different, um, type.

I used to give good reviews to movies, restaurants, and video games while working for the Batt in order to keep the freeloader train running smoothly. So while I think the posts these people make on Twitter are absolutely cliched and canned, I definitely respect the hustle.

i can't even tell you the sheer rush of "I'm better than everyone else" that I felt as sports editor of the Batt when EA Sports sent us the new College Football game for Sega Genesis a month before it came out in stores. I was like Palpatine killing Mace Windu.

My own experience in the ROP fandom points to a somewhat symbiotic relationship between the studios and the various reviewers in general, but "fan influencers" in particular.

If you want access, especially as a non-legacy media, fandom-type group, you must emphasize the positives, and heavily downplay the negatives. Otherwise, you won't be included in anything.

I was an original founder of the group Fellowship of Fans, which came together to speculate than somehow became the source for many leaks about S1. As we grew in prominence, we saw the pressure to minimize critical voices of the show in our group, and we mostly yielded to that pressure.

I'm not badmouthing the movie but I wanted to share a text from my 76-year-old dad when i asked him if he had any interest in seeing Gladiator 2 (he loves the first one like I do) and then asked him on what chance he thought we had vs the sips in a few weeks.

his answer:

ABSOLUTELY NONE TO BOTH QUESTIONS
