How are so many people seeing this film when it hasn't released yet? Is this a unique marketing campaign to soft release this film?

It came out last Thursday
No it didn't. At least not in the US. The actual opening date is supposed to be this Friday

Anyone in San Antonio want two tickets to the Alamo Drafthouse in Stone Oak to Friday 7 pm showing? I bought them a month ago and my son's football team made the playoffs and have a round 2 game on Friday. Showing is sold out, Free to a Texager

November 15 = Gladiator II released in 63 international box office markets.

November 22 = Gladiator II releases in North America and China.

Re: the delayed domestic release, Paramount didn't want to be doing a hard marketing push with a final run of TV spots, late night/interview appearances, etc the week after the election, no matter who the winner was going to be. The feeling was that audiences would still be too distracted, and I basically agree, seeing as it only recently felt like things finally started to die down in that regard. This is also an "off" year/holiday season, due to the strikes, with no massive, live-action franchise blockbuster at Christmas. It's just Musafa and that's it. So Gladiator II, Wicked, and Manoa 2 all have a longer runway than usual, and more than enough time to carve out their respective lanes over the next six to eight weeks or so.

Maybe she thought it was a prequel. There have been a lot of those the past few years.

It was clear from her line of questioning that she did not remember much of it. She didn't see it until we were dating and I doubt she has seen it since.

Well, if that's the case.

You should have just said yes when she asked if they were in this one.

Yes. Spoiler Alert: Gladiator II is actually a zombie movie

I am happy to report this movie does not suck.

I thought it was pretty good. It was gonna be solidly in the Napoleon tier for me (which I enjoyed more than most), but then the last 30 minutes really kicked it up closer to Gladiator tier. It totally made the movie for me.

I won't say there weren't issues with it. For instance, you never quite feel the level of connection with Lucius that you do with Maximus. There's not that thirst for revenge and thus not nearly the same level of catharsis for most of the movie. And the two emperors are basically caricatures.

Also the music, as I feared, is a massive step down from Zimmer's iconic score. Most of it is just loud and bombastic, with none of the nuance of the northern African flair that Zimmer brought in, or Lisa Gerrard's voice.

But that was always gonna be a high bar.

Overall though, a solid time at the movies. For fans of the first I'd say it's definitely worth the trip to the theater.

Same. This is basically how I felt.

My thought process throughout the movie…

First act = "This isn't too bad!"

Two-thirds of the way through = "This is way too long... where is it going... the straight-to-DVD-sequel vibes are little too strong here..."

Final act = "Wow, okay! Ridley's still got it."

For anyone concerned that it looks to be a repeat of the first movie… it is and it isn't. If you can accept the basic conceit, that the main character is yet again concealing his identity as he gains popularity as a gladiator, the rest of the movie is actually pretty different. Don't get me wrong, none of it feels incredibly essential or like it was a follow-up story begging to be told. But it is different enough, and builds on the first movie just enough, to where I would argue that it does feel more original than something like The Force Awakens. There are plenty of good twists and turns, it's not all telegraphed, Denzel adds a fun/interesting layer, etc.

That said, I couldn't stop thinking about a tweet I read a couple days ago that said something to the effect of, "The difference between a movie star and an actor has never been more evident." In other words, as much as I like Paul Mescal, he's definitely no Russell Crowe. Granted, not many actors are, especially when Crowe was at the top of his game, and Mescal's not bad at all in this. But man, he's just so incredibly one-note throughout that you can feel his star wattage dimming as the runtime progresses. He'll be in movies for years to come, but I'm afraid this was his one chance at blockbuster stardom. And while he doesn't blow it by any means, the whole time you can't help but compare to/appreciate Crowe more and more.

Still, the movie is absolutely worth seeing and, for what it's worth, drew a big applause at the end of our sold-out showing. It's a serviceable-to-good movie with a great ending, but one that could have been great from start to finish with a more charismatic lead and - I hate to say it, but much like Juror #2 - a director who isn't in their late '80s/early '90s who otherwise might have tightened things up a bit, sold certain moments just a little better, etc.

I tried to get better pics, but it was way too crowded/hectic. They built this massive setup at the Chinese Theater, though, where the premiere was a couple night ago. Pretty crazy to see in person...

I just want to know, in reference to all of the pre-release hype tweets, is this in fact the greatest movie of all time destined to win every Academy Award from here to eternity?

Agree with the above. Had a fun time. It had some issues, mostly in the 2nd act. I went in not trying to be a movie critic but just to have a good time with whatever this was going to be and it delivered. Ok, now a (probably silly) thing I noticed in the final scene of the movie.

During a critical moment in Top Gun, Maverick clutches Goose's dog tags in his hand and says "talk to me, Goose." At the end of this film, Lucius grabs dirt/rocks from the arena floor, clutches it in his hand and says "speak to me, father." Is this Ridley giving brother Tony a nod?

was it bloodier than the first?

seems from the advertising they are going for as much gore as possible

the cool thing about Gladiator was the opening Roman Legion battle scenes.

any of that?

Yeah it's true. He never quite gets to that Chalamet level in Dune 2.

This movie is not very good, but also not bad. Mediocre in some ways, great in others.
Very bad writing imo, especially all of Denzel's characters plotline.

Gladiator has always been the shining example of a spectacular film that they didn't feel the need to do a sequel to. Perfect films don't need a part 2.

I would've agreed with you a year and a half ago, but after seeing today - it was a fantastic sequel!

The first third of the movie there was a lot going on and a lot to keep up with - in a good way. There was enough left for the audience to figure out who was who and what was going on - thought it was a smart film. There were 3 or 4 crowd cheering moments that were fun, and I'm looking forward to a rewatch.
Great movie going experience.
And Connie Nielsen has not aged at all. She is absolutely beautiful!

Pretty good movie, all in all. The Roman history fan in me has to wish that their civilization would be depicted in a more authentic way, but then I also know that Romans themselves would love how outlandish and over the top this movie is in a lot of ways. Didn't love it like the first one, but didn't leave pissed off like I did with Napoleon. 6.5/10.
