Let me preface this by saying I like "No Church in the Wild", Jay Z and Kanye. I listen to them when working out, etc… that being said I don't think that it should have ever been used for an Ancient Rome movie. The Twitter woke crowd is calling everybody who hates it racist now and they are justifying the use because the lyrics mention the colosseum.

Whole thing has gotten out of hand, the marketing person for this should be fired IMO for turning such an anticipated movie into a **** show

Veil the accusation however you'd like…it doesn't take much to read between the lines of your post.

I mean... it's equally insane how mad people are about it.

Sure, a traditional score probably would have been better, and I get being slightly annoyed by the use of a hip hop song.

But based on the level of vitriol, one would think Ridley Scott personally came to people's homes and killed their pets or something. It's super weird, and a way over-the-top reaction to nothing more than a song in a movie trailer, one that's only in the final third or so at that.

Granted, the idiots calling everyone a racist who doesn't like the song choice... those guys can eat a dick, and are being just as hysterical.

My point all along is that everyone just needs to chill, and it seems we're at least in agreement there.

No, but the thread was winding down and I figured it needed a kickstart - went for the low-hanging fruit. Take a breath before you blow a gasket, friend. We're all having fun here.

How about Jewish people who don't like Kanye West's music being promoted after he denied the Holocaust happened and praised Hitler 2 years ago?

The direct quote was - "I see good things about Hitler," West said. "Every human being has something of value that they brought to the table, especially Hitler … [Nazis] did good things, too … There's a lot of things that I love about Hitler."

Hysterical?

Dude, come on.

If a Jewish person, or anyone else, has a problem with the song because of the Kanye/Hitler factor, OF COURSE they're 100% justified in their opinion.

But 99% of the discourse isn't that.

Rather, it simply has to do with the use of *a* hip hop song (not a *Kayne* hip hop song) vs those who wanted the Gladiator score or something more traditional.

Literally no one is calling out Jewish people for hating Kanye, or referring to them, specifically, as hysterical.

Don't get me wrong I'm still gonna see the movie, that being said I hope Denzel's acting isn't just Denzel

Regarding the curious choice of a hip hop song in this trailer, and without having read every post, I am presuming that was a choice made by whoever put the trailer together and not an indication of what the film's score will sound like.

And for those saying that's the only way Denzel can act I recommend seeing Roman J Israel. ESQ; it's not the best film but you forget you're watching Denzel's usual badass characters

Denzel played Macbeth and was Brutus on Broadway. What are people worried about exactly?

Nobody said Denzel can't act or he has only one character that he plays. We're saying the clips of him in this trailer look an awful lot like Training Day in Rome.

Why expect anything from an 86 year old director? I made this mistake wrt Killers of the Flower Moon. Never again. Would pity anyone who still cares about cinema if pity ever did anything good.

He's 86!?! *looks it up* Yep, he's 86.

I forget how old I am, and in turn, I forget how old everybody else is. This guy has been killing it since I was a kid in the 80s... of course he's old now. But still... damn!

Not to be too negative but seeing the trailers I really honestly just don't get this movie. Don't really understand the need for it & think it might flop.

I think it'll be a modest success. A lot of people won't go in expecting much more than some crazy gladiatorial combat sequences, which I'm sure it'll deliver. It'll look cool on the big screen. Just best not to go into it expecting it to come close to the original.

Yea it's definitely not giving off the aura and tone the first one had.

It looks more action packed and typical hollywood big set fight scenes. On top of that there a crap ton of CGI which the first didn't have much of

It's just a bad song choice. Woke has nothing to do with it.
The posters here with a majority of posts on forum 16 believe woke has everything to do with it.

We would have also accepted "Wake up!"

The music was a mild annoyance but not any kind of dealbreaker. Besides the music, I don't think the trailer was very well put together. It looks like a confusing mess of over-the-top silliness.

It could be fantastic, though. I'd love to see a little more footage to start getting my excitement up.

Breathless hyperbole? Maybe so. Either way, add it to the list of growing Oscar buzz, from test screening attendees, a rival studio exec, and now others who have reportedly already seen the movie itself...

Quote:

The first trailer for Ridley Scott's hotly anticipated "Gladiator II" dropped, sending casual pundits and cinephiles over the moon with excitement about what Paul Mescal, Denzel Washington and Pedro Pascal might deliver in their respective roles. Rumors are swirling that the two-time Oscar-winning Washington ("Glory" and "Training Day") offers one of the strongest performances of his career. There's even talk that his campaign might mirror the iconic runs of Daniel Day-Lewis in "Gangs of New York" or Meryl Streep in "The Devil Wears Prada," potentially positioning him for a lead acting nomination instead of the presumed supporting run as we may have assumed. Could there be room for Washington and former nominee Mescal ("Aftersun")? We'll see if that possibility comes to fruition. Notably, the mere speculation alone is thrilling, especially considering "The Piano Lesson," which he produced, stars his son John David Washington. Could we be looking at the first father-son duo nominated in acting categories? The mere thought is exhilarating.

So your theory is that, despite the trailer blowing away records for views, and gaining plenty of good buzz in addition to the bad, Paramount panicked, decided to play damage control, and their answer was to pay off one of the most respected Oscar pundits in the game, he miraculously accepted, but only ran a one-paragraph blurb in a much larger story that hardly anyone is going to read on a Friday afternoon, risking his job and reputation in the process? That's what you're going with?
