Thanks for posting the trailer! I would not have known about it if not for this thread.

Giving it a rewatch.

First 2/3 of the trailer had good music (noises) set to it, really built the tension well.
Seems like they just decided they needed to add the last 1/3 with the modern song to it for whatever reason.

At least it wasnt a choir singing a 90s song at a haunting half tempo beat.

Technically, I didn't post it (wagnus12 did), but I'll take credit for starting the thread/posting the trailer announcement.

It's been 24 years since the original, and as much as I love sweeping, dramatic film scores, they just aren't as en vogue as they used to be. I wish they were.

Knowing older fans will likely show up regardless, with this trailer, the studio is seemingly trying to get the attention of/lock in a new generation. So, music-wise, I totally get the inclination to want to go with something more modern (even if it is admittedly from 2011) - for now.

That said, I'll bet anyone here the next trailer is more traditional, and also more plot-focused.

That said...

The first trailer for Dune used a Pink Floyd song.

The first trailer for The Batman used a Nirvana song.

The first trailer for the latest Indiana Jones used The Rolling Stones.

... etc, etc.

In the past, all of these movies would have no doubt been marketed with traditional scores. But in order to stand out, and offer a sense of variety across their respective, months-long marketing campaigns, studios/filmmakers are wanting to mix it up more and more as of late.

Some people like it.

Others want the more traditional route.

Personally, I don't think either way is wrong. Just different.

Roman emperors were all about jumping the shark. They would have thousands of slaves dig man-made lakes and fill them with water so they could watch to-scale reenactments of naval battles within a convenient distance of the palace. One emperor created a whole new cult and populated the empire with statues of his lover after the guy drowned. They all wanted to outdo their predecessors in spectacle. Nothing in this trailer looks beyond the realm of what the emperors would arrange for their entertainment.
Thanks and gig'em

While I agree that there's a lot of CGI, personally, I'm legit shocked at how good the CGI is. There's not a singe shot - not even the rhino - that looks bad, IMO. It's all totally believable to me, and that's rarely the case with a lot of modern blockbusters.
You're correct. But it's not just CGI. It's what you do with it.

Like, standing on the rhino. In and of itself that is no big deal. But my overall impression of the trailer was having to go above and beyond the original in ways that, for me, lose the immersion.

Like simple Jedi lightsaber fights that morphed into martial art showmanship. I get it though. Just can't do what has already been done.

Really what I need to do is compare my old man opinion with that of my 19- and 17-year-old sons. Then I'll find out I'm just an old man romanticizing the past like every other old fogey.

That being said, the trailer music choice is terrible and does not inspire confidence regardless of what young people might say

I hear you on the spectacle, and the Jedi comparison is a good call. I need to see how it's all utilized in-movie first before I agree with you, though.

As for the trailer music, we're simply going to have agree to disagree. I just watched the trailer twice more and could not find that track more exciting or fitting. To the point where I'm so glad they didn't do the exact thing everyone expected, and went with the solemn score/Lisa Gerrard vocals as someone ran their hand through a wheat field or whatever.

And I'm in my 40s.

It's an incredible score, no doubt, but there will be a time and a place for it in the marketing eventually.
Nothing to do but wait and see.

To Bruce asking about getting the sharks in. This is one of my concerns which leads me to foresee a grand spectacle merely meant to outdo the original Gladiator and appeal to an audience that has "seen it all." I'm no historian, but I have read Livy, Tacitus, Suetonius, and others, and I have never come across sharks, let alone fighting sharks.

LIke riding the rhinoceros. It's not grand enough to battle a rhino. Let's have a gladiator ride the rhino...Better yet, let's have him enter standing atop the beast.

Everything now must be in grandiose fashion for people who literally, via their phones, have seen everything. And I just don't believe that makes it any better (and to be clear, I'm not talking about historical accuracy but crossing the boundaries of believability - again, like every fight now is an extravagant martial arts display)

But as I responded to TCTTS, nothing to do but wait and see.

Just wanted to point out that when TCTTS first posted months ago the description of the action in this film I responded that it sounded like they went too much over the top. I was laughed off the thread as being ridiculous and lame.

… and yet we still don't know who will have the last laugh, seeing as no one here has any idea yet how any of this will play in-movie. What we do know is that a lot of it is, indeed, historically accurate, despite the over-the-topness, and that early reactions from those who have seen early cuts are calling it Oscar worthy. So my bet is still that this ends up being good, if not great, but we shall see…

Oscar worthy. Okay.
TCTTS
How long do you want to ignore this user?

Why is that so hard to believe?

- The first movie was nominated for 12 Academy Awards.

- This one features an incredible cast who, sure, likes money, but almost assuredly wouldn't have signed on if the script was *****

- Even in his misses Ridley Scott has been delivering Oscar nominees across multiple categories the last ten years.

- Word from test screening reactions - which aren't public/on Twitter (meaning no chance of being performative) - have been through the roof, while an anonymous exec at a rival studio who saw it recently said he thinks it will be nominated for Best Picture.

Sure, it could absolutely end up sucking, but this sudden, knee-jerk hate is so weird to me, all things considered.

Only on TexAgs would "No Church in the Wild" - one of the most popular hip hop tracks of the 21st century, by Jay-Z and Kanye West at the peak of their powers - be considered "terrible" rap/"freakin' Spotify music." Not only is the track from the infamous "Watch the Throne" album (a title that is obviously thematically relevant here), the song itself is about nihilism and the idea that often you have to fight for yourself when there is one else to save you (also thematically relevant). The lyrics specifically mention "tears on the mausoleum floor, blood stains the Coliseum doors" (heard in the trailer) while the chorus is spot-on as well…

Human beings in a mob
What's a mob to a king?
What's a king to a God?
What's a God to a non-believer
Who don't believe in anything?
Will he make it out alive?
Alright, alright
No church in the wild

In other words, this wasn't some flippant song choice, but rather a thematically rich play for a more modern audience, and personally I think it kicks ass.

Also, you guys realize there was a trailer for the first movie scored to Kid Rock, right?

It's a ****ing hip hop song in a movie about ancient ****ing Rome, dude. Just stop. Get help.
TCTTS

Get help?

Did you really just say that over an opinion of a movie trailer?

Do you know how many times modern music - even hip hop - has been used in trailers for period pieces? Far too many to even count.

Some of you really are being so insanely precious and weird about this.

You have a problem.

I guess I'd argue that those songs are appropriate for the time period in which those movies were set (yes, dune is in the future - I'm guessing I haven't seen it - but it's based on 0 truth).

This is a movie about ancient Rome - using Kanye makes me think of A Knights Tale with all the modern music. Admittedly it worked in AKT, but it was a silly movie so a silly choice made since. This is not that.
