Wtf was that longhorn steakhouse sketch? One of the dumbest things I've ever seen. They kept saying Texarkana but they all had bayou accents?

That whole episode was a waste of time.

Those were terrible Cajun accents.

The talent is there, it's our culture that is broken. Assuming these comics are hilarious, which some of them are, what topics CAN they joke about and how can they phrase their jokes in a way which won't get themselves and SNL canceled? That's the actual issue. SNL was at its height when you could just joke about pretty much anyone or anything and everyone laughed or got mad and moved on with their life. Yeah, SNL sucks now, so do virtually all sitcoms/late night shows. You tune in to any program which is supposed to be funny and you find the same kind of humor, the same safe, predictable jokes being recycled. Thank God for the few daring comics willing to risk being canceled to actually pursue comedy for the sake of comedy.

Yeah it's all good. Underground comedy is where it really should be anyway. Folks that go and seek out funny folks and then spread them through word of mouth. That's the way it should be. Mainstream is dead, so avoid it. All good.

James Austin Johnson cracks me up. I really hope the future of SNL leans more toward guys like him and Please Don't Destroy...

Stumbled on this today. This is a documentary by James Franco on what a typical week is like on SNL, mostly filmed in 2008.

It's both a cool look at the inner workings of the show, and a great time capsule of that awesome cast and era of SNL.

Highly recommend giving it a watch if you're an SNL fan.

I don't see where you posted it but I guess the algorithm sent it to both of us today.

Good video.

Someone in the Last of Us thread mentioned Pascal being on SNL and gave a run down of the week leading up to the show. I linked this video because I watched it around a year or so ago.

That's a crazy coincidence.

As someone who loves the history of the show and its importance on the history of American comedy, I love this documentary. It's not the greatest technically, but it's everything I've ever wanted to see behind the scenes.

Agreed, it's great. I love listening to Fly on the Wall, but it's much cooler actually seeing everything that takes place at the show.

It also gives you insight to how talented some of these performers are, versus others. The scene with Bill Hader and John Mulaney just riffing off each other and improving an entire sketch as John writes it is a level of comedy that few people in the world can achieve. Not hyperbole, imo, because I think Bill Hader and John Mulaney are just that good at what they do, especially when they were fresh and coming up with new ideas.

Really, that entire doc showed me that Bill Hader was just the funniest cast member both on screen and in the office.

The table read with Hader, Armisen, and John Malkovich was just so amazing to see. Especially because I know that skit from the actual airing. It makes me think about how legendary it would have been to see the table reads of some of the most classic skits of all time.

I also would have loved to see something like this with some of the SNL greats like Will Ferrell or Conan. I know Conan got his opportunity for Late Night because Lorne Michaels put him up for it specifically because of how much he made everyone laugh around the office. Will Ferrell was apparently always doing long running gags and characters around the the office, as well.

Yeah, I think Bill Hader was the beating heart of that cast and probably a top 10 all-time cast member. (At least in my personal list.)

As a huge SNL fan, thanks for posting this. I have somehow never heard of this until today, and this cast is pretty close to me as it was the main era of late high school-college age for me when it transitioned from the Will Ferrell to this new era which felt more like my kind of humor and so many of the cast members in this are ppl who I greatly enjoy.

Bill Hader is Phil Hartman 2,0 and for sure a top ten cast member

I still regularly view SNL, and am a fan, but this season is the worst I've seen in a while.

The main problem are the featured players. I hope none of them return, they are all weak, except maybe the James Thompson guy. Even Bowen Yang, he just isn't funny to me.

The repertory players still have some firepower when the writings good.. Keenan is a legend.. McKinnon is fantastic. Cecily Strong, Aidy Bryant, Heidi Gardner, Melissa Villasenor very serviceable. I like Ego I just don't think she's that funny. The dudes are weaker with Chris Redd, Kyle Mooney, Alex Moffat and Mikey Day being ok..Pete Davidson is just Pete. Love him or hate him.

WORST WEEKEND UPDATE probably ever. Jost and Che ****ing suck. They've been doing it for 8 years together and have the chemistry of 2 half dead strangers. Both have the personalities of a tree.
Highlighted are now gone. All the weaker dudes you mention besides Mikey Day, too.

Were the Toyota guys saying Brenham, TX in that commercial? I must have missed that exit (because of the Raising Cane's traffic, no doubt)!

The non-stop assault of Hugo Gallegos is my favorite part of that skit.
