One thing that stood out to me for the show was that it seemed like they relied more on former hosts compared to cast members. For instance, Scarlet Johansson was in at least 2 sketches, that I'm sure many cast members would have loved to have. Or the bringing in Meryl Streep(who has never been on SNL) for the alien abduction sketch when Jane Curtin would have been perfect for that.

That was a nod to Martin Short.

I thought the same.
And it has been a criticism of the current SNL production--relying on non-cast stars to capture the social media audience and the pop from the crowd.

I liked the scared straight sketch because it combined the old with the current cast without relying on guest stars: Sudekis, Kenan, Eddie Murphy and Will Ferrell with current -Mikey Day, Marcello Hernndez, Michael Longfellow. I'm not sure how many times Will Ferrell and Eddie Murphy have appeared in any scenes together before this.

For those who like rankings, lists and retrospectives, Bill Simmons did nearly a half-hour part of his podcast on his all-time favorites skits, musical acts, important moments, etc.

I liked his discussion of building the perfect cast of 8-9 performers, not necessarily the top 8-9 players, but who would have been the ideal cast needing stars but also perfect role versatile role players.

His list: Eddie Murphy, Will Ferrell, Dana Carvey, Phil Hartman, Bill Hader, Gilda Radner, Maya Rudolph, Kristen Wiig, and John Belushi.

He gave the weekend update slot to Norm.

I think the toughest to leave out are Farley, Mike Myers, Amy Poehler, Fred Armisen...and I'm just going to stop since it's tough to narrow down.

And sitting next to Al Sharpton! Something I never thought I'd see.
Ah, I do remember that now.

The telethon skit with Heather Locklear should have made the politically incorrect compilation
One of the funniest skits of all time in my opinion, and probably the most politically incorrect. The whole "politically incorrect" montage should have just been a replay of this sketch as it originally aired.

The look on Mike Meyer's face was fanstic. It was literally the exact same look he gave when Kanye said George Bush hates black people.

Never seen that one before.
Outstanding writing. Her turning every call into a new version of the sales pitch was classic.

And Spade with the trouble with R words while high.

Watched it last night. The times I laughed the most is when they played old skits, commercials, etc. Most of the new things they did fell very flat for me. The Black Jeopardy one had potential but Hanks coming on threw a wet blanket on it. The scared straight one was one of the funnier skits especially when Ferrell entered.

Caught up on all the 50th episodes. Enjoyed the show and the music from Friday night.

Loved SNL way back when. Haven't watched a full episode in years. Barely know most of the current cast. It's also easy to see whatever is funny later on clips. Watching the recent episode with Chappelle.

I would argue that this isn't political incorrect. The whole joke is that she is saying racist stuff to sell the pasta maker. At no point are they acting like the stuff she is saying is fine. The whole joke is that everything she is saying is inappropriate.

Coupla Beers was a pretty good skit. Something we all can relate to.

Shane Gillis was in the Texags studio after the Notre Dame game this year....

I feel like Shane Gillis needs a writing partner for his stand up. I think he's probably really funny in person, and in his stand up he's got really funny ideas, but it always seems like it's the first time he has ever performed them live. He gets about halfway through a joke and can't figure out where to go with it. It always feels very awkward to me.

Agreed. I like Gillis in general, and it was pretty funny episode otherwise, but man that monologue was bad.

I think he's anticipating the audience laughing while he's going through a bit so he starts laughing at himself to get them into it. It doesn't always work. He can't just power through until the punchline.

His jokes are great. His delivery needs polish.

Fair enough. I actually see it the opposite. Part of his "everyman" charm is he comes across as one of your buddies (albeit a lot funnier) and a guy you'd love to have a beer with. I think he loses some of that appeal if he becomes some polished guy doing an obviously well rehearsed bit. But, clearly, opinions can vary.
