I thought it went on a bit too long, but the High School Musical, Next Gen made me laugh. Maybe more so because the basketball players are so unathletically non-basketball players, just like in the original.

I love Brunson's Voice". And yeah the 2 lead were spot on for HS Musical.

Thought the girl on the left was good in the couple moments she had in the skits she was in.

That... might have been the worst collection of sketches I've ever seen in a single episode? Combined with an all-time terrible musical guest I'd never heard of, plus no-personality Dakota Johnson, and that had to have been one of the cringiest episodes in a long while. The Zelda/GTA thing during Weekend Update made me chuckle at least. Otherwise? Oof.

This may just be a music genre thing for you.
Turnstile has been pretty big for 4-5 years now and is legit.

Just looked them up watched a few videos and part of a live show in Maine.

Meh.

Some of their softer stuff is, as Fred Savage said to Deadpool about Nickleback, "formulaic ear garbage". Some good guitar solos, though.

Their heavier stuff sounds like a ripoff of the more thrash songs of Jane's Addiction or Rage Against The Machine.

I just assumed that since the rest of the show was meh, they gave Jost and Che more time. But maybe that was always the plan.

I caught part of Turnstile on the Hulu ACL Fest broadcast Friday evening, and my hunch is they are a live band that feeds off the audience interaction. SNL slot doesn't really give them that. Looked like they had a ton of people at their ACL show, so it was nice to see that style of band play on a big stage (mosh pits and all!). And not another EDM/DJ set.

SNL would be so much better off if they would keep going back to the Dropout well like they did with Jeremy. Lisa Gilroy is probably too big for it now, but she auditioned a few years ago and wasn't picked. She would have killed, as would plenty of other people over there.
